Topic: Models Of Communication

In this subject we would learn the Nature and Process of communication.

Lets begin with the question, what is Communication?

Communication came from the Latin word communicare which means "To make common"

Communication is a way to share or transmit our

•Ideas
•Thoughts
•Information
•Feelings through verbal (words) or non-verbal actions such as
•Gesture
•Posture
•Facial expression
•Sign languages

It is also the reason why you and your friend and family bond. It is because you and them share
things in common.

Alright, Before heading directly to us communicating, How does the Process of

Communication really work?

Well that's easy, We only need a speaker and a receiver.

For communication to work One must send a message (speaker) to the receiver
for them to be able to give feedback which can create a cycle of communication.

For example:

A boy texted his friend to tell them that he wants to hang out, once the friend got the message
they will give feedback in return to let the speaker know that they got the message.

However, there are also times when we fail to communicate effectively which causes
misunderstanding or miscommunication. The cause of these problems will
be further explained to our next topic.

Models of communication:

Just a recap Communication is the field of study concerned with the transmission of information
by various means.
Models of communication however are conceptual models used to explain the human
communication process by giving a visual overview of different aspects of communication.

And there are the 4 models of communication

1. Aristotle's Model of Communication
2. Shannon-Weaver Model of Communication (1949)
3. Transaction Model of Communication
4. Helical Model of Communication

STARLA RODRIQUEZ:

What do you mean about

Aristotle’s Model of communication

This Model is more of a linear-type; it is broadly divided into 5 primary elements

•SPEAKER
•SPEECH
•OCCASION
•AUDIENCE
•EFFECT

Since it is a Linear-type model of communication, Aristotle’s Model of communication is a speaker

centered model where the speaker and speech are very important.

Let's talk about the Speaker.

Speaker is the most important role in this process. They are the one that delivers a message to the
audience according to the occasion.
~~ It plays an important role here because they serve as the delivery or voice we need to build
communication

Now let us proceed to the Speech

Speech relates to the message the speaker is delivering to persuade its audience.
~~ This is related to the speaker because it is the one that contains the message of the speaker

Next, Occasion
Occasion is the setting or situation of the environment that dictates the message on the speech.
~~ This is part of the model where this could affect the message that the speaker wants to deliver.

And how about Audience?

The Audience are the ones who listen to the speech. They are passive and receive the message
that the speaker wants to be delivered. This makes the process unidirectional, from speaker to
audience.
~~ They are the ones who are listening, they sit and absorb the information that the speaker
provides.

And lastly what do we mean about effect?

Effect refers to the outcome of the communication process, meaning this will be the last step
whether the audience got persuaded or not.
~~ So here is where the results apply, this step is up to the listeners. If they got persuaded then you
did a great job and if not, well...better luck next time.

An example of Aristotle’s Model of communication is:

A politician (the speaker) gives a speech on a market square during an election campaign (the
occasion). With the goal of winning the citizens/ Audiences vote.

MARK DAGNALAN:

Into our 2nd Model Which is

Shannon-Weaver Model of Communication (1949)

This model is specially designed to develop the effective communication between sender and
receiver. Also they find factors which affect the communication process called “Noise”. At first
the model was developed to improve Technical communication. And later widely applied in the
field of Communication.

The model deals with various concepts like

•Information Source
•Transmitter
•Noise
•Channel
•Message
•Receiver
•Information destination
•Encode
•Decode
An example of this is when someone made a call and said “do you wanna hang out?” During this
call, noise appeared (transmission error) and the receiver only received “do wanna”.

Due to transmission error or noise, The receiver wasn’t able to understand The sender's
message.

Acting- call then kungware maingay sa part ni Erdie tas kausap nya si shiendrey tas di
maintindihan ni shiendrey kase maingay nga don sa side ni erdie.

STARLA RODRIQUEZ:

Next Model is the Transaction Model of Communication.

Transaction Model of Communication is a communication where a two-way communication

process happens with feedback being included as an element. This is where the receiver could be
the sender and vice versa. It is a continuous exchange of information where both the sender and
receiver are involved in the process and take turns to communicate messages.
An example of transaction Model of Communication is:

An online meeting between students and teacher or a meeting in which all attendees participate
by sharing ideas and comments.

SHIENDREY MIGUEL:

And last but not the least Helical Model of Communication\

Helical Model of Communication or Dance’s Helix model is a model explained by the means of
a helix. This shape describes the communication process, and visualises communication as a
spiral-shaped model. Helical Model of Communication was proposed by Frank Dance in 1967.

The best example for this model is the cycle of human life.

A child crying at birth signifies the communication of the child to its parents that he/she is alive.
After some years, He/she learns words and starts communicating with words. Communication
becomes more complex as the child grows into adult and to the existing moment. The adult
uses the same pronunciations and use of words or facial expressions that he/she learned when
he/she was a child. Communication is directly dependent on his/her past behavior as a child but
can also modify as the person grows.

This is where the helix is based on. As the human continues to communicate the helix gradually
grows. When the communication becomes more complex, the spiral grows wider. From then on,
it grows steadily as his life goes on.
