 When we report someone’s words at a later time, we


need to change the tenses.
 Present  Past
 Past  Past
Pronouns, adverbs and demonstratives need to be
replaced.

 Could, would, should, might, ought to, used to and verbs in the
past perfect do NOT change when reported at a later time.

 MUST  must or had to (the latter is more common).

 We do not need to change the verb tense when we are reporting


things that are still true:
 ‘I’ve got a brother’  He told me (that) he’s got a brother.

 Must (and not had to), when we report:


 A negative
 Paul: “You mustn’t tell Sally our secret”  Paul said we mustn’t
tell Sally our secret.
 A deduction
 Sarah: “Jim must be tired after the flight”  Sarah said Jim
must be tired after the flight.

 Sheldon says: “That is my spot”


 Sheldon says (that) that is his spot.

 Sheldon said: “That is my spot”


 Sheldon said (that) that was his spot.

 Say
 If followed by an object, it needs “to”
 He said to me (that)…
 Tell
 If reported, it must be followed by an object without to.
 Other reporting verbs are:
 Answer, reply, state, remind, persuade, inform, suggest, mention,
among others.

 When we report commands and requests 


verb + object (somebody) + to-infinitive
 ‘Please stay, John,’ she said.  She asked John to stay.

 Tell, order and ask are some common reporting verbs for commands and
requests:
 ‘Be quiet!’ she told them  She told them to be quiet.
 ‘Stop!’ the police officer told him.  The police officer ordered him to stop.

 Negative commands and requests  NOT before to-infinitive.


 ‘Please, don’t do it,’ she told him  She told him not to do it.

Reporting questions:

 The word order is the same as in statements:


 She asked me where I was from.
 She asked me where was I from.
 Two types:
 Yes / No questions.
 Wh-Word questions.

Reporting questions:
 Yes/No questions are reported with if or whether:
 ‘Does she live in a big flat?’ he asked.  She asked if /
whether she lived in a big flat.

 We use the same structure when we ask politely for


information:
 Can you tell me what time the next train leaves?
 I’d like to know if there’s a flight to Australia next
Thursday.

Reporting questions:

 Wh-questions are reported with the question word


used:
 ‘Who built that castle’ he asked.  She wanted to know
who had built the castle.
 ‘Why are you laughing?’ she asked us.  She asked us
why we were laughing.

theatre, playhouse, cinema, art gallery, museum, park, stadium, zoo, circus,
concert hall, opera house, pub, bar, night club, disco, wine bar, cafe, bingo hall,
snooker hall, bowling alley, leisure centre, arts centre, exhibition centre, theme
park, festival, fairground…

Leisure vocabulary
walk, stroll, hike, bike ride, ice skating, swimming, horse riding, canoeing,
shooting, playing golf, crazy golf, roller blading, skateboarding, bowling, laser
quest, listening to music, playing cards, going to the fair, going to a festival, going
to see a live band…

Arranging to go out:
 Shall we go out tonight?
 Do you fancy going out?
 Do you feel like going out tonight?
 Shall we go clubbing at the weekend? (‘clubbing’ mean as going to a nightclub)
 I fancy going dancing tonight
 What’s on at the cinema?
 Is there anything good on?
 Do you want to get a bite to eat?
 What can we do for a cheap night out?
 Shall we go down the local? (the ‘local’ means your local pub, the nearest pub to
where you live)

 We can stay in and veg out (‘veg’ means relax and do nothing – like a
vegetable!)
 Why don’t we go back to yours and cook a meal?
