CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
The Scheme exposes students to industry-based skills necessary for a smooth transition from the classroom to the world of
work. It affords students of tertiary institutions the opportunity of being familiarized and exposed to the needed experience in
handling machinery and equipment which are usually not available in the educational institutions. Participation in SIWES has
become a necessary precondition for the award of Diploma and Degree certificates in specific disciplines in most institutions of
higher learning in the country, in accordance with the education policy of government.
The Operators: The ITF, the coordinating organizations (NUC, NCCE, and NBTE), the employers of labor, and the
institutions.
The Federal Government of Nigeria's funding Beneficiaries: Undergraduates majoring in the following fields: Agriculture,
Engineering, Technology, Environmental Science, Education, Medicine, And Pure and Applied Sciences.
Duration: six months for universities and four months for polytechnics and colleges of education. At the end of the 2007
fiscal year, 194,890 students from universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education participated in SIWES. Over the years,
SIWES has made a significant contribution to creating a common pool of technical and related skills that the Nigerian
economy can draw on to support the development of the country's industrial sector. These achievements and contributions are
possible due to regular innovations and improvements in the modalities employed to manage the scheme.
Over the years the SIWES programme has contributed immensely to building the common pool of technical and allied skills
available to the Nigerian economy which are needed for the nation’s industrial development. These contributions and achievements
have been possible because of regular innovations and improvements in the modalities employed for the management of the
scheme.
OBJECTIVES OF SIWES
The objectives of Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) includes:
a) Providing an avenue for students to acquire industrial skills for experience during their course of study.
b) Bridging the gap between theory and practical by providing a platform to apply knowledge gained in school to real work
situations.
c) Preparing students to the work atmosphere they are to face after graduation.
d) Exposing students to work methods and techniques in handling equipment and machineries that may not be available in
their institutions.
IMPORTANCE OF SIWES
b) It strengthens links between the employers, universities and |Industrial Training Fund (ITF).
b) Poor working conditions: Some organizations may not have adequate facilities or resources to support the training and
development of students during their SIWES experience. This can make it difficult for students to gain the practical
experience they need to complement their classroom learning.
c) Lack of Supervision: In some cases, students may be left unsupervised or may not receive adequate guidance and support
from their supervisors during their SIWES experience. This can affect the quality of their training and limit their
opportunities for learning.
d) Inappropriate tasks: In some cases, students may be given menial or inappropriate tasks that are not related to their field of
study during their SIWES experience. This can limit their opportunities for learning and development.
e) Transportation and accommodation challenges: Students may face challenges with transportation accommodation during
their SIWES experience, particularly if they are placed in organizations that are far from their homes or institutions.
f) Overall, while the SIWES program is designed to provide students with valuable work experience, there are several
challenges that can affect the quality of the experience and limit the opportunities for learning and development.

CHAPTER FOUR
INTRODUCTION
During my industrial training at the MIS division of Auchi Polytechnic, I was introduced to the world of web development,
specifically HTML and website creation. This report outlines my journey from a novice to gaining a foundational understanding of
HTML and its application in building basic websites.
UNDERSTANDING HTML
HTML, which stands for HyperText Markup Language, is the fundamental building block of web pages. It provides the
structure and content of a website. Essentially, HTML is a set of rules for marking up text, so that web browsers can interpret
and display it correctly. By using HTML tags, developers can create headings, paragraphs, lists, images, links, and other
elements that form the basic framework of a webpage. While HTML itself doesn't handle the visual presentation of a page, it
lays the groundwork for styling with CSS.
HTML, or HyperText Markup Language, is the standard language for creating web pages and applications. It's a set of rules
for structuring content on the internet. Think of it as the skeleton of a webpage, providing the basic framework for text, images,
links, and other elements.
HTML uses tags, which are enclosed in angle brackets (<>), to define the structure of a document. For instance, the <p> tag
defines a paragraph, while <h1> to <h6> define headings of different levels of importance. Images are inserted using the <img>
tag, and links are created with the <a> tag.
The primary purpose of HTML is to structure content in a way that is understandable by web browsers. It ensures that text,
images, and other elements are displayed correctly on different devices. Additionally, HTML allows for the creation of interactive
elements, such as forms and buttons, enabling user input and dynamic content. By providing a foundation for web pages, HTML
plays a crucial role in the development of the World Wide Web.
1. <!DOCTYPE html>: This declaration specifies the document type and informs the browser about the HTML version
being used.
2. <html></html>: This is the root element of an HTML document, encompassing all other elements.
3. <head></head>: This section contains meta-information about the document, such as the title, stylesheets, and scripts.
The title is defined within the <title> tag and is displayed in the browser's title bar.
4. <body></body>: This section contains the visible content of the webpage, including headings, paragraphs, images, links,
and other elements that users will see.
FOR EXAMPLE
-6-
<html>
<head>
</head>
<body>
<h1>Hello, World!</h1>
</body>
</html>
HTML TAGS
HTML tags are the building blocks of web pages. They define the structure and content of a document. Encased in angle
brackets (<>), tags tell the browser how to display text, images, links, and other elements. For example, <p> creates a paragraph,
while <h1> defines a heading. HTML's versatility allows for creating diverse and interactive web pages.
-7-
CHAPTER FIVE
INTRODUCTION
A well-structured website is crucial for user experience and SEO. Begin by defining your website's purpose and target
audience. Create a sitemap to visualize the page hierarchy. The foundation of your website is HTML, using tags like <head>,
<body>, <h1>, <p>, and <a> for structure and content. Organize content logically with headings and subheadings. Ensure clear
navigation with a consistent menu.
Importance of Structure
A clear website structure enhances user experience by making information easy to find. Search engines also appreciate well-
organized content, potentially improving your website's ranking. By following basic HTML principles and creating a logical
layout, you set the stage for a successful website. Remember, a well-structured foundation will support further development with
CSS for styling and JavaScript for interactivity.
PLANNING WEBSITE
Planning a website is crucial for its success. It involves defining your goals, understanding your audience, and outlining the
structure and content.
● Select a domain name that reflects your brand and is easy to remember.
● Choose a reliable hosting provider to ensure your website is accessible online.
Create a Sitemap:
● Outline the structure of your website, including main pages and subpages.
● Visualize how users will navigate through your site.
Content Planning:
-8-
Design and Layout:
The index page is the default page that loads when someone visits your website. It's often the main entry point and should give
visitors a clear idea of what your website offers.
<html>
<head>
<title>My Website</title>
</head>
<body>
<h1>Welcome to My Website</h1>
<nav>
<ul>
<li><a href="about.html">About</a></li>
-9-
<li><a href="contact.html">Contact</a></li>
<li><a href="services.html">Services</a></li>
</ul>
</nav>
</body>
</html>
To create an internal link, use the <a> tag with the href attribute. Instead of specifying an external URL, use the relative path
to the target page.
Example:
This link will take the user to a page named "about.html" within the same directory.
NOTE: When creating internal links, Craft clear anchor text (skip "click here"), link to relevant pages within your site, avoid
link overload, place them strategically, and fix broken links regularly for a smooth user experience.
Internal linking is crucial for website navigation and SEO. Include links to key pages in your header or footer for easy access.
Organize related content into groups and link between them. Use descriptive keywords in anchor text to improve search engine
visibility. By strategically placing internal links, you enhance user experience, guide search engines, and boost your website's
overall performance
- 10 -
CREATING A SITE MAP
A sitemap is a blueprint of your website's structure. It outlines pages and their relationships.
Steps:
1. List all pages: Include homepage, internal, and external links.
2. Hierarchical structure: Organize pages in a logical order, reflecting navigation.
3. Prioritize importance: Use indentation or numbering to show page hierarchy.
4. Visual representation: Create a diagram or flowchart for clarity.
5. XML sitemap: Generate an XML sitemap for search engines.
Benefits:
● Improves website navigation.
● Assists search engine crawling.
● Helps in content planning.
● Facilitates website maintenance.
By creating a clear sitemap, you enhance user experience and improve your website's search engine visibility.
TOOLS USED
Building websites requires various tools. Code editors like Visual Studio Code or Sublime Text handle HTML, CSS, and
JavaScript. Design tools like Adobe XD, Figma, or Sketch create visual elements. CMS platforms like WordPress, Wix, or
Squarespace offer user-friendly interfaces. For hosting, services like GoDaddy or HostGator are essential. Version control systems
like Git manage code changes. Additional tools include image editors, prototyping software, and project management platforms.
