Hey there!
Welcome to a planning system that works for your unique and crazy life.
If you’ve never stuck to keeping a planner for more than a few days, then ...for endless appreciation,
you’re in luck. This is a proven system that works well for people like you.
high-fives, and likely a
There are a few things you need to know though. brownie.
Two Options to Print:
Done for You: We suggest that most people start with this option. Just print the file double-sided as it is. Stick it in a
binder (or get it professionally bound at most office supply stores for about $4). Then go through and date it.
No printer? Office supply stores can print it for you, the library often has a discounted or free printing program, or you
can use a mail service like bestvaluecopy.com for 2.7 cent copies. We recommend printing in black and white when you
do that.
Customizable: You can remove and substitute pages as you see fit. For example, if you use Plan to Eat for meal
planning, then you can remove the simplified meal planning pages. We have optional pages that were included in your
purchased file. If you choose customizable, we suggest printing off a month at a time while you figure out what pages
work for you.
Because you purchased a digital undated planner, you get to use this year after year without ever having to pay for it
again. And we want the planner to grow with you as your life gets less crazy and more specific.
Index: Unlike a traditional planner, you’re buying an entire system that’s made to work for your unique personality. We
have an in-depth index at the back of the planner, so if you ever get stuck or don’t know how to use a section of the
planner, just check the index.
Upgrade: While this planning system can be used independently if you also struggle with home management like
keeping the house clean, meal planning and budgeting…
You should know that the Home Success Planner was made to fit into our popular and proven home management
system Hot Mess to Home Success, which uses your unique personality and lifestyle to build a home management
system that works for you without needing extra time.
You can find out more about Hot Mess to Home Success at https://www.busybudgeter.com/hotmess.
1. Grab a sheet of paper and brain dump all of the things you’ve been trying to remember. For example...
• We need milk.
• Date night on Saturday.
• School pictures next Friday.
• Switching shifts with Emily on the 14th.
2. As you add things to your calendar think of anything you need to do to prep for an event and leave an additional
note two weeks ahead. For example...
• Chase’s birthday on 28th. Add an entry on the 14th with “present for chase’s birthday”.
• Wedding on the 15th. Add an entry on the 1st with “find a dress for wedding and budget for a gift”.
3. Empty planner space is a good thing! Don’t overcrowd your planner with a giant wish list of things you’d like to do.
You need your planner to be an uncluttered list of MUST DO’s. There are project planning pages within your planner
that you can use to track all of your “want to do’s”
4. Keep your planner open to the current week in one spot always. We suggest someplace that you’ll pass by several
times a day. The corner of the kitchen counter is a popular spot for most readers. It should never leave that area (keep
a pen with it as well... tie it to the planner if need be).
5. Use your cell phone to snap a photo of your week in case you need it while you’re out and about.
6. Text yourself reminders (because no one ever texts themselves and it’s the easiest way to take fast notes). Don’t
forget voice chat! You can tell Siri or Alexa “Text (your name) doctor’s appointment on the 5th at 8:30 am”. Then every
night, check your texts and write down any new events in your planner.
7. Need a reminder at work or in the car? Include a note on a super sticky Post It Note and stick it straight on your
dash. For example...Pick up milk after work today. You can stick a pad of super sticky notes to the inside front cover of
your planner if you want.
8. Use phone alarms sparingly for anything you don’t want to drop the ball on. If there are major consequences to
missing something, then set a phone alarm to remind yourself. Hint: If you use phone alarms for everything though, they
lose their potency.
9. If you can’t stand scribbled out events on a planner as things change, then switch to only using Frixion pens
(which are completely erasable) or pencils in your planner.
That’s it! You have everything you need now to rock this!

You can also add custom project pages to your planner which break your goals down into 15 min tasks; but most of our readers
prefer to have this in a seperate book (15 Minute Project Planner).

BUST: Measure under your arms at the fullest part of your chest with a bra on.

WAIST: Bend to the side, find the area where your skin forms a crease. That is the natural
waistline, measure from there around your waist (this should be above the belly button and below
the rib cage). Don’t suck in your stomach, you want to be comfortable.
your measurement
HIPS: Measure around the widest part of your hips. A trick to this is to sit in a chair with arms. The part
of your hips that is closest to the arms of the chair is where you want to measure.
your measurement
INSEAM: Make sure you don’t have shoes on, then measure from the bottom of the crotch to where you want your pants to fall. Most
people measure to the bottom of the ankle, but that depends on your favorite fit.

COLLAR OR NECK SIZE: Wrap the measuring tape around your neck just below your Adams apple
leaving a finger between the tape and your neck.

MEN’S PANTS SIZE: Pants size is a combination of a man’s waist size and inseam. The first number is your waist size, the second is your
inseam length. Example: 32 x 34 jean size in mens is 32 inches (waist) x 34 inches (inseam). Waist measurement will always come
before the inseam measurement in the size.

INSEAM: With arms relaxed at your side and slightly bent, measure from center back neck, over the point of shoulder, down the outside
of the arm to the very end of the wrist (touching the meaty part of your palm).

Report your goals for the month and your progress. You can have up to 3 goals, but fewer goals = a higher success rate
(especially in the beginning!)
For Example:
Goal: Spend under $650 for food this month. We’re on the 15th day of the month and have currently spent $340. So,
we still have $310 for the next 13 days.
Monthly Overview
Goals and Tasks: You can pull out a few goals and tasks you’d like to work on this month from the Goals and Tasks
Wishlist. Less is more here. It’s better to have just a few goals and tasks to work on and rock it then it is to have tons of
goals with no progress.
Stop Doing List: We all have things that we do out of habit or frustration that make our lives less enjoyable. This is
your chance to choose a few to focus on removing from your life, one at a time. Popular examples are…
• Scrolling Facebook
• Swearing
• Candy Crush
If you’re nervous about removing these things, let’s make it an a/b test. Remove it for one month and see what happens.
Fun Day Bucket List: My long term goal for you is to have one day a week (every week!) that you do something fun.
Something that you love.
This could be with friends, with kids, with your spouse, or just by yourself. Choose a few things to do this month from
the Master Fun Day Bucket List and put down an estimated cost for the activity.
When you make your Master List, include the estimated costs of activities, then you can choose activities based on
your budget. I aim for at least half of my fun day activities to be free. (Need ideas? There’s a giant list here... https://
www.busybudgeter.com/things-to-d-when-bored-ultimate-list/)
Grateful: Write down the best thing that happened last month to remember all of the wins you have as you go
through your year.
Intention: What’s the best thing that can happen this month? Writing it down triggers your brain to prioritize it and
it’s more likely to happen as you make unconscious moves towards that goal.
(Overwhelmed? Yes, world peace is likely the best thing that could happen this month, but we’re looking for a quick
response of what you’re secretly wishing would happen in your own life.)
Healthy Habits
By using icons, we allow you to customize the healthy habits to your personal routines, even as they shift. If you’re new
to any focus on healthy habits, we suggest that you only focus on one area at a time and track that. Draw lines through
any other healthy habits, so you can focus on your one habit.
Weight Lifting Icon: You can use this area to log one of the following...
• Minutes of exercise.
Eating Utensil Icon: You can use this to log one of the following...
• Calories consumed.
• Macros.
Water Drop Icon: You can use this to log one of the following...
• Ounces of water.
• Cups of water.
Exclamation Mark Icon: You can use this to log one of the following...
• Conflict such as marital arguments or fights with children (this can be helpful to track when working on a
relationship that you’d like to make better).
• Symptoms. Dairy intolerance? Phantom pains? This gives you an easy way to track reoccurring symptoms to help
identify triggers.
• Log your weekly weight (Tip: Weigh yourself at the same time with the same amount of clothing and on the
same scale)
• Arms: Use a flexible tape measure, to measure around the largest part of your arm.
• Waist: Use a flexible tape measure to measure around the natural break in your waist (not sure where that is, lean
to the left. Where your waist folds is the natural break, usually a few inches above the belly button).
Category: Break your budget down into the categories that you’ll use. We suggest using the following...
• Savings
• Investments
• Car Payments
• Mortgage Payments
Set Expenses: These are the expenses that remain the same every month and it’s not really possible to impulsively
spend more. Examples include...
• Netflix
• Electric
• Internet
Food: ANYTHING THAT YOU PUT IN YOUR MOUTH to consume. This not only includes grocery store
shopping but also, eating fast food, restaurants, and alcohol.
Stockroom: This is anything you need to run your house. This usually includes things you would buy at Walmart or
Target such as deodorant, toilet paper, shampoo, etc.
Discretionary: Absolutely any other spending. Include anything else you spend money on...
• Hair cuts
• Clothing
• Vacations
Once you have your categories written down, include the budgeted amount for the month.
At the end of the month when you do your budget come back here and…
• Use the +/- column to log whether you were over budget or under budget in each category.
Weekly Plan
Fill out the dates (in the square) for each day.
Errands For The Week: List any errands that you need to do this week. Examples, return Amazon purchase or pick
up dry cleaning.
Fun Day: Choose something from your Monthly Fun Day List to do this week.
Brainstorming Box: You can put anything here. Don’t worry about being neat! You can list items you need to buy,
things you need to remember or just jot down notes as someone talks to you.
Weekly Tracker: This lets you build super consistent habits with minimal effort.
To mark off dishes: You need to wash and put away one load of dishes. That’s it, just one.
To mark off laundry: You need to wash and put away one load of laundry.
To mark off schedule book: You need to spend 2 minutes checking your text messages to yourself to see if you have
new entries to put in, make any updates and you’re done.
To mark off declutter: You need to spend 15 minutes removing things from your house.
To mark off pick up: You need to set a timer for 5 minutes and have every member of your family help “reset” the
main areas of your house. This would include picking up things left out and cleaning up.
To mark off chore block: You need to set a timer for 15 minutes and complete the chore for the day from the
simplified cleaning system.
Meal planning blocks (with eating utensil icon): You can mark off what you plan to serve for breakfast, lunch, dinner
or snack here. Or, you can leave yourself additional notes for the day such as “defrost chicken for tomorrow.”
It just lets you get ingredients for a few options into the house so you can grab what looks good on any given day. We
also usually plan less meals than we have days allowing us to have some meals more than twice and use up leftovers.
Dinners: Choose 6-7 dinner options. Consider sticking to easy meals like 15-minute meals if you’re new to meal
planning.
Side Dishes: Choose 3-5 easy side dish options (like apples, peanut butter, salads, steamed green beans, ect.
Back Up Meal: A back up meal is what you eat when you’re plan fails. It’s the last step between you ordering a pizza or
Chinese.
Easy back up meals are usually pantry or freezer safe (meaning the ingredients stay fresh in the house for a long time
until you need them). Choose 1 meal to always have in the house ready to make if you need it.
Examples are…
• Chicken nuggets
• T.V. dinners
Hint: You don’t need a new back up meal every week. Just keep one on hand until you use it. And then replace it.
(Note: you have to like the idea of your back up meal or you’ll order a pizza anyway).
• Calculate your actual spending for last month. Enter it into your Monthly Spending Report.
• Update your spending tracker. You do this by categorizing your purchases, either on the scratchpad provided, in
Tiller Money, or within your banking app.
• Confirm that your spending tracker shows the same number as your online bank balance.
• Go through your spending for the week. How did you do? What did you overspend on? How can you prevent that
in the upcoming week?
• Cancel care.com
Assign those steps to someone in your family. They’ll need to report on that being done at the next budget meeting.
• Estimate the amount of these you use monthly and calculate their unit price
Find the unit price: Let’s say you want to find the unit price of 12 ounces of soup that costs $2.40. You would divide
$2.40 by 12 ounces, to get the unit price of soup which is $0.20 per ounce.
Once you have the unit price, you can order a few months of these items at the lowest unit price to be shipped directly
to your house.
This also means that instead of constantly picking these up at Target or a grocery store and paying the mark up, you get
them at the lowest price plus you avoid impulse shopping. You save hours of your life doing this and a ton of money.
You have 4 pages here in case you have a large family or so you have room to reset as the year goes on.
Measurements: By keeping a note of your measurements at least yearly, you’ll find it much easier to buy clothing
online (and have them fit) with free returns (USPS picks up return packages at most homes, so you can eliminate that
errand as well).
1. We don’t track kid’s measurements in the planner because they change so frequently over a year (but you can use
the notes section in the adult measurement section to keep track of kids sizes).
2. For teens that have slowed down in growth, you can use the adult measurement page and just update them yearly
(we include one page with male and female measurements in the book).
Make a list of all of the things that HAVE to be cleaned and done in your home (you don’t need to write down
anything in the daily blocks since those are covered every day through the weekly tracker).
On a recent poll of our students, items most frequently on their “chores that matter list” were:
• Meal planning
• Ordering groceries
Reset Day: Reset day is one of the days off where you get to set yourself up to win for the week. What you include on
©2020 The Busy Budgeter Index 6
your reset day list will look different based on what your routines are. Our student’s most frequent reset day items are…
Chore Blocks: Take the items under chores that matter and assign them each to a day, if you have consistent days off,
you can also assign a reset day and a fun day to this list as well (preferably adding no chore blocks to fun day).
As you go through your week and your weekly tracker reminds you to do a chore block every day for 15 minutes you
can refer to this to remember what you need to do.
• Once you have all of your goals and tasks listed out, go through and star the top 3 things that you believe will have
the most impact on your life.
• Then start the top 3 that are you are most excited about doing.
Choose 1 goal from each of the starred categories (biggest impact and most excited) to work on this month (no more!)
Once those tasks are completed, you can assign yourself two additional goals, using the same system.
When those goals become irrelevant or no longer something you wish to pursue, cross them out.
You can break these projects down into 15-minute tasks right on the monthly overview page under goals.
If you’d prefer to set up a full 15-minute project planner separate from your planner you can do that at www.
busybudgeter.com/projectplanner
Binge Lists
Keep all of the things you want to watch or read in one spot so you don’t waste time trying to remember what you’re
excited about trying.
If upcoming shows have premiere dates, you can also include those here. As you catch up and watch, put a thin line
through the item (so you can still read it when another season comes out).
You can use T.V’s and movies to temptation stack things like doing laundry or doing dishes. Reserve a favorite show
for watching only while you do laundry and dishes (If you have a smartphone and an app like Hulu or Netflix, you can
lean it right on the counter while you watch).
Include the estimated cost of each activity, as you choose things to do for the month you can take into account your
budget (and pair something more expensive with a few free ones). If you need help finding events and things you love,
look at Facebook events suggestions or ask friends and family in the neighborhood.
