Look what I can do!

I can identify quadrilaterals.

I can describe quadrilaterals.
I can classify quadrilaterals.
I can sketch quadrilaterals.

5.2 Circles
We are going to …
• learn the names of the parts of a circle
• draw circles accurately.

The diagram shows a circle.

The red dot shows the centre of the circle.

When you draw a circle, you draw a set of points that are the same
distance from the centre. This distance is called the radius of the circle.
The perimeter of the circle is called the circumference.
The diameter of the circle is a line joining two points on the
circumference that goes through the centre of the circle.

Worked example 2

Draw a circle of radius 4 cm. Label the centre, radius,

diameter and circumference of the circle.

Open your compasses to 4 cm.

of the circle, then place the
point of your compasses
on the dot.

Exercise 5.2
1 Copy the diagram. Label the parts of the circle shown using the
following words: centre, diameter, radius, circumference.

2 Draw a circle with a radius of

a 5 cm b 60 mm

Think like a mathematician

Arun draws a circle with radius 3 cm.

Sofia draws a circle with diameter 60 mm.
Read what Arun says.

Tip
Our circles
are exactly the
Remember that
same size!
1 cm = 10 mm.

a Is Arun correct? Explain your answer.

b Write down a rule that connects the radius
with the diameter of a circle.
c Discuss your answers to parts a and b with
other learners in your class.

3 These cards show different measurements.

A Radius = 2 cm B Radius = 10 cm C Diameter = 8 cm

D Diameter = 20 cm E Radius = 4 cm F Radius = 20 mm

G Radius = 40 mm H Diameter = 4 cm I Diameter = 200 mm

Sort the cards into groups of measurements that will give the
same size circles.
4 This is part of Gethin’s homework.

Task: draw and label a diameter onto this circle.

Solution:

a Explain the mistake that Gethin has made.

b Draw out a correct solution for him.
5 a Draw a dot and label the point A. Make sure
Tip
there is about 4 cm of space above, below,
to the left and to the right of your point.
This means
b Draw the set of points that are exactly 3.5 cm draw a circle
from the point A. of radius 3.5 cm.
