10 Multiplication and division (1)

4 Here are two calculation cards A and B.

A = 588 ÷ 14 B = 374 ÷ 11

What is the difference between A and B?
5 Use factors to work out these calculations.
a 924 ÷ 12 b 960 ÷ 15 c 882 ÷ 18
Check your answers with your partner.
6 Eggs are put in boxes. Each box holds 12 eggs.

A farmer has 684 eggs. How many boxes does he need to pack his eggs?
7 Mandy says, ‘I can work out 825 ÷ 15 by dividing by 10 and then
dividing by 5.’
Do you agree with Mandy? Explain your answer.

10 A meal in a restaurant costs the same for each person.
For 11 people the meal costs $297. What is the cost for each person?
11 Work out the value of the missing digit.
a 39 ÷ 6 = 65 remainder 3 b 76 ÷ 9 = 84 remainder 8

Think about the methods you used to answer these

questions. Did your partner choose the same methods?
Which methods were the most efficient? Did you remember
to estimate and check?

Think like a mathematician

Choose any four digits.

Arrange them to make a division calculation:

Work out the answer.

Try other arrangements using the same four digits.
• Which arrangement gives the largest answer?
• Which arrangement gives the smallest answer?

Look what I can do!

I can estimate the size of an answer before calculating it.

I can divide whole numbers up to 1000 by 1-digit whole numbers.
I can divide whole numbers up to 1000 by 2-digit whole numbers.

Can you share the cookies so that you and five of your friends all get the
same number?
Divisibility rules for whole numbers are useful because they help you
quickly find out if a number can be divided without leaving a remainder.

Worked example 3

Write a digit in the box so the number is divisible by 3.

Can you find more than one answer?

80 17

8 + 0 + 1 + 7 = 16 Find the sum of the digits used.

Answer: The sum of the digits must be a multiple of 3,
80 217 or 80 517 or 80 817 so you can add 2 or 5 or 8.

Can you find more than one answer to this question?

If you were asked to find all the possible answers, what would you do?

Think like a mathematician

Paulo has forgotten the 4-digit number that allows him to open his case.
He knows that the number:
• is less than 3000
• is divisible by 3
• has a tens digit that is divisible by 3
• has a hundreds digit that is divisible by 3
• has a ones digit that is bigger than the tens digit
• has a ones digit and a thousands digit that are not multiples of 3
• has no zeros.
Find all the numbers that satisfy all these conditions.
