1 GENERAL/INTRODUCTION
1.1 Purpose
This standard covers the environmental, physical, electrical, mechanical, functional, regulatory and
durability requirements for metric screws and bolts with non-metallic locking elements.
This standard covers fasteners that incorporate a locking feature that reduces the potential for the
fastener to loosen.
RM
This standard covers the quality, dimensional requirements, inspection procedures and necessary
process controls for non-metallic prevailing torque type metric screws and bolts.
NO
This standard specifies supplemental requirements that the supplier must perform to demonstrate that
initial production set-up parts meet FCA US Engineering specifications and that part quality is maintained
at a satisfactory level during the production run of the part.
The test contained within this standard, supplements the formal supplier program of material inspections,
dimensional checking, and in-process controls; and should in no way adversely influence supplier
R
adherence to other more statistically significant inspection operations.
TE
1.3 Application
This standard is limited in its application to those CAD files (such as CATIA/NX), drawings or engineering
illustrations which call out this standard number, or refer to this standard within some other standard or
US
specification
Products and processes used to manufacture the products listed in this standard must conform to the
employee and consumer health, employee safety, regulated substances, recycling and environmental
reporting requirements.
A test plan (DVP&R) shall be developed to verify and validate all required functions specified in this
standard. The responsible entity shall provide any additional testing that’s deemed necessary to meet
functional requirements; the tables at the end of this document provide summary of all the requirements,
and shall be used to develop the test planning.
Samples utilized for Design Verification (DV) shall meet specified drawings tolerance range. Samples for
Production Validation (PV) shall meet statistical capabilities for machine and manufacturing processes.
Where necessary, each line item of the test plan (DVP&R) must be supported by a comprehensive test or
laboratory procedure. A test plan (DVP&R) agreement by FCA does not relieve the responsible entity
from ensuring that the component or system meets all environmental, physical, electrical, mechanical,
functional, regulatory and durability requirements including all applicable system interface requirements,
in the entity’s area of responsibility, as described in the standard for the specified useful life.
Suggested, recommended or specified components and/or suppliers, if any, are still required to comply to
RM
the specification and do not relieve the responsible entity from ensuring that the component or system
utilizing these suggested, recommended or specified components and/or suppliers meets all
environmental, physical, electrical, mechanical, functional, regulatory and durability requirements
including all applicable system interface requirements, in the entity’s area of responsibility, as described
in the standard for the specified useful life.

6 APPEARANCE / PHYSICAL / MECHANICAL / ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS
Thread Start: The locking feature will be such that the screw or bolt will assemble freely a minimum of
one full turn into any mating internally threaded component having 6H tolerance thread.

Locking element Retention: The locking element must be retained on the screw or bolt to prevent
loosening or loss during shipment and or handling.
CL
Locking element Protrusion: The locking element shall not protrude more than 0.25 mm over the major
diameter of the thread unless otherwise noted on the part drawing.
Supplier shall demonstrate dimensional capability for all key dimensional characteristics, identified on
CAD files (such as CATIA/NX), during DV and PV phases including physical interface requirements e.g.:

At the end of measuring operations in Table 4 and Table 5 and as shown in Figure 3 , any locking device
“shedding” has to be evaluated by the following the criteria shown in Figure 3
The exception is that of any usage on a tapered threaded adapter, pipe plug, fitting, sensor, etc. These
types of fasteners will shed a large volume of sealing material in many applications sue to the wedge
effects that a tapered thread uses to provide an interference fit in the threads during assembly.
The screws shall conform to the requirements for prevailing and breakaway torque as outlined in sections
6.3.1 and 6.3.2 according to the specific manufacturing point, either NAFTA of EMEA regions.
The measurement is done by screwing manually a screw in a nut or adapter. The nut or adapter shall
meet the specification describe in section 4.1.
The nut must be screwed until its threaded portion covers all the pretreated zone of the screw; after
reaching this position, the screw is full tightened and the value of Max. Prevailing Torque (at 1st
RM
screwing operation) is measured during the following 2 rotations (without considering the starting torque).
The nut has to be unscrewed 2 rotations (640°) and the value of Min. Prevailing Torque (at 1st
unscrewing operation) is measured. Repeat that operation 2 more times and measure only the Min.
Prevailing Torque value (at 3rd unscrewing operation).
The Prevailing torque values measured has to be within the range (Min - Max) indicated in the tables

Prevailing torque tests will be conducted using a threaded adapter (see Section 4.1 Special Test
Equipment). The threaded adapter shall be reusable; however the threads must be cleaned of any debris
before a new part is tested. The test part will be seated against a uniform non-turning bearing face.
Threads will be lubricated with SAE 10W oil for these tests.
The same lock screw or bolt and threaded adapter shall be tested for locking ability throughout five
installations. All screws or bolts must permit installation, seating at specified clamp load if applicable, and
removed five times without thread deformation, scoring or galling, which would impair disassembly or
reuse of said screw or bolt. Parts must be cooled to room temperature between tests. The locking screw
or bolt will be installed until the locking element contacts the threaded adapter. The screw or bolt will then
be engaged for a maximum of 1.2 bolt diameters on all sizes except M6 and smaller, which will be
engaged a maximum of 1.75 bolt diameters. The prevailing torque will be measured while the screw or
bolt is being rotated through this distance. The maximum prevailing torque during the first installation,
with the screw or bolt in motion, shall be recorded. Prevailing torque shall not exceed the maximum first
on value, specified in Table 5: Prevailing and Breakaway Torques at any time during any part of the test.

Screws or bolts shall be seated to the specified clamp load, 75% of proof load, per Table 6: Clamp Load
Chart, on each installation, unless otherwise noted on the part drawing or with the following exceptions:
lock screws or bolts with lengths too short to permit the use of a load measuring device or head
configurations that cannot be seated against a uniform non-turning bearing face. Such parts must meet
the prevailing torque specifications but will not be subject to the clamping load requirements of this
procedure.
After seating the screw or bolt to the specified clamp load (if applicable) apply a force to the torque
wrench in the opposite direction from installation to completely remove the test load. The breakaway
torque, defined as the torque required to start relative rotation between the locking screw and its mating
thread with no axial load on the screw, shall then be recorded and shall not be less than the values
specified in Table 1: Prevailing and Breakaway Torques. The first and fifth off minimum prevailing
RM
torques shall be recorded while the lock screw or bolt is in motion and being rotated through the next one
full revolution and shall not fall below the values specified in Table 1: Prevailing and Breakaway Torques.
The lock screw or bolt shall be removed from the mating thread after each installation.
