Natural

Natural pollution arises from natural processes like volcanic eruptions, forest fires, and dust storms, leading to significant environmental challenges. It can cause air quality issues and health problems, with biological sources like algal blooms also contributing toxins. While it cannot be fully prevented, monitoring and public health warnings are essential for community protection.

📝 IELTS-Style Worksheet: Natural Pollution

📖 Reading Passage

Natural pollution refers to the contamination of the environment through natural processes rather than
human activity. While most pollution is often associated with industrial waste, vehicle emissions, and
plastic waste, nature itself can also be a powerful source of pollution.

Volcanic eruptions are a prime example. When a volcano erupts, it releases enormous amounts of gases
such as sulfur dioxide, ash, and particulates into the atmosphere. These can lead to acid rain and
respiratory problems in nearby populations. Similarly, forest fires—though sometimes caused by human
negligence—can also occur naturally due to lightning strikes, releasing large quantities of carbon dioxide
and other harmful gases.

Dust storms are another form of natural pollution. In arid regions, strong winds can lift vast clouds of
dust and sand into the air. These storms reduce air quality and visibility, and prolonged exposure can
cause respiratory illnesses. Earthquakes and landslides can also disturb natural waste, releasing harmful
substances into water sources or soil.

Biological sources also contribute to pollution. For instance, algal blooms caused by the rapid growth of
algae in water bodies can release toxins harmful to marine life and humans. While some blooms are
intensified by human activity, others are entirely natural and still hazardous.

Although natural pollution cannot be fully prevented, scientists and environmentalists study its patterns
to better prepare for its effects. Public health warnings and environmental monitoring systems are often
used to protect communities from these unpredictable events.

In summary, natural pollution is a significant environmental challenge that occurs independently of

human activity, highlighting the need for constant observation and adaptation.

9. What can trigger natural forest fires?

10. What type of pollution reduces visibility?
11. What do scientists use to protect people from natural pollution?

12. Dust storms only occur in humid areas.

13. Algal blooms always require human pollution to develop.

✍️Writing Task 1

The chart below shows the types of natural pollution events reported worldwide in 2023:

Type of Pollution Percentage (%)

Volcanic Eruptions 25%

Forest Fires 30%

Dust Storms 20%

Algal Blooms 15%

Other Natural Events 10%

Write a report summarizing the information. You should write at least 150 words.

✍️Writing Task 2
Some people believe that natural pollution is less dangerous than pollution caused by humans.
Others argue that both forms are equally harmful to the environment and human health.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion. You should write at least 250 words.
