Introduction to Automation

Prof(Dr) SS Chauhan
Advantages of Automation
(a) Lower operating costs
(b) Improved worker safety
(c) Reduced factory lead times
(d) Faster Return of investment(ROI)
(e) Ability to be more competitive
(f) Increased production output
(g) Consistent and improved part production and quality
(h) Smaller environmental footprint
(i) Better planning
(j) Reduce need for outsourcing
(k) Optimal utilization of floor space
(l) Easy integration
(m) Maximize labour
(n) Increase productivity and efficiency
(o) Increase system versatility
Goals of Automation
1. Integrate various aspects of manufacturing operations.
2. Improve productivity by reducing manufacturing cost
through better control of production.
3. Improve quality by employing more repeatable processes.
4. Reduce work piece damage caused by manual handling of
parts.
5. Raise the level of safety for personal, specially under
hazardous working conditions.
6. Economize on floor space in the manufacturing plant by
arranging the machines, material movement, and related
equipment more efficiently.
Types of Automation systems
Three basic types:

1. Fixed automation or Hard Automation

2. Programmable automation
3. Flexible automation
Fixed Automation
A manufacturing system in which the sequence of
processing (or assembly) operations is fixed by the
equipment configuration
Typical features:
 Suited to high production quantities
 High initial investment for custom-engineered
equipment
 High production rates
 Relatively inflexible in accommodating product variety
Example: Automated material handling & transfer lines &
assembly equipments.
Programmable Automation
A manufacturing system designed with the capability to
change the sequence of operations to accommodate
different product configurations
Typical features:
 High investment in general purpose equipment
 Lower production rates than fixed automation
 Flexibility to deal with variations and changes in
product configuration.
 Most suitable for batch production.
 Physical setup and part program must be changed
between jobs (batches).
Examples: - NC controlled M/C tools & Industrial robots.
Flexible Automation
An extension of programmable automation in which
the system is capable of changing over from one job to
the next with no lost time between jobs
Typical features:
 High investment for custom-engineered system
 Continuous production of variable mixes of products
 Medium production rates.
Example: - CNC M/C tools, reprogrammable Industrial
robots.
