Adolescence: Between Childhood and Adulthood

Early Adolescence – around 10 – 13 years old


Middle Adolescence – from 14 – 16 years old
Late Adolescence – from 17 – 20 years old

Self-Identity influenced and molded by their external environment.
Role confusion is the negation of self-identity in a sense that there is confusion over one’s self-
concept or the absence or lack of such a concept

Changes During Adolescence

Adolescent – psychological transitioning

Idealism – very prominent among adolescent; very self-conscious (your worried about what may
people think) and egocentric (thinking only oneself)
Experimentation – common activity among adolescent
Socializing – male and female occur in this phase
Sexual experimentation – also happens at this stage

1. Adjust to sexually maturing bodies and feelings
2. Develop and apply abstract thinking skills
3. Develop and apply a new perspective on human relationships
4. Develop and apply new coping skills in areas such as decision making, problem solving, and
conflict resolution
5. Identifying meaningful moral standards values and beliefs system
6. Understand and express more complex emotional experiences
