NOTES
1. Each of the sample battery selected in the first stage as per column 2 of Table above will be subjected
to all the class ‘B’ acceptance tests. A battery shall be declared defective if it fails in one or more of the
class ‘B’ tests.
2. If the number of defective sample is zero (C1 at column 5), the lot shall be considered as conforming to
the specified requirements and shall be accepted.
3. If the number of the defective is equal to or greater than C2 (Column 6), the entire lot shall be rejected.
4. If the number of defective is greater than zero (C1 at column 5) but less than C2 (column 6), a further
sampling of the same size (column 3) is done and these second stage samples are subjected to all the class ‘B’
tests as done before.

JSS 6140-03 : 2019
(Fifth Revision)
5. If the number of defective in first and second stages combined is less than C3 (Column 7), the lot shall
be accepted. Otherwise, the entire lot shall be rejected.
6. The above sampling plan shall be made applicable only when smooth production flow of the battery
has started and supply of not less than 200 batteries is made or if the firm has supplied the same type of batteries
in bulk (of not less than 200) earlier and the last consignment has been supplied not earlier than one year before
tendering the present lot. For others, the following rate of sampling will be carried out.
(On random samples upto a maximum of 1% of the bulk as required by the Quality
Assurance Authority).
The samples after completion of class ‘A’ and ‘B’ tests are subjected to the following tests:
a) Capacity test at &30ºC after charge at &30ºC.
Since class ‘C’ tests are time consuming, release of the lot will not await completion of class
‘C tests. However, when failures are noticed, the matter shall be taken up with the
manufacturer for evolving and implementing corrective measure forthwith. The acceptance of
batches tendered after failures in Class ‘C’ tests are noticed, shall be subject to satisfactory
implementation of the corrective measures. The samples on completion of class ‘C’ tests will
be returned to the firm for re-offering and the same if found acceptable in class ‘A’ tests will
be released as part of the bulk as yellow banded (not fit for operational deployment) model.

computing the cycle life obtained the No. of cycles up to the last 28th cycle
with a discharge duration not less than 4 h 15 min shall be counted.
b) The cycle life thus obtained shall be not less than that specified in the
relevant supplement to this specification.
9.10.5.16.2 Procedure is as per IEC 61951-1 (2001-01) CI : 4.4.1 Table 11 is given below
before the endurance in cycle test, the cell shall be discharged at 0.2It A to a final voltage of
1.0 V/cell.
9.10.5.16.3 The following endurance test shall be carried out irrespective of cell
designation, in a ambient temperature of 20ºC ±5ºC. Charge and discharge shall be carried
out at constant current in accordance with conditions specified in Table 11, 11a, 11b and 12.
Precautions shall be taken to prevent the cell case temperature from rising above 35ºC during
the test, by providing a forced air draught, if necessary.
NOTE - Actual cell temperature, not the ambient temperature determines cell performance. Table 11 Endurance
in cycles for small prismatic cells and for cylindrical cells.
The battery which has been discharged at 5 h rate to 1 V per cell average is kept in idle
storage at room temperature for 4 years. On completion of the above storage period, the
battery is subjected to the following tests.
22
JSS 6140-03 : 2019
(Fifth Revision)
a) Initial charge as per clause 4.1 followed by a rest for not less than 1 h
and not more than 4 h and capacity discharge at 5 h rate upto 1 V per cell
average.
NOTE - A maximum of 3 such cycles of charge and discharge are allowed within which the
battery shall yield the rated Ah capacity.
9.10.5.18.1 The following sequence of the environmental tests are specified for batteries
used with ground equipments partly protected (Class L2).
a) Before commencement of each environmental test, the battery will be
in fully charged condition. The physical condition of the battery, individual
cell voltages and terminal voltage will be recorded before and after each of the
following tests.
23
JSS 6140-03 : 2019

Clause 3.3.
To be mounted without isolators, in vertical position. No. of bumps 4000 ±10 at peak
acceleration of 400m/s2.
Clause 3.2.
The procedure as per Clause 4.4.2.3 of IEC 61951 (2001-01) is given below:
9.10.5.19.1 The permanent charge endurance test shall be performed in three steps
according to the conditions specified in Table 15.
9.10.5.19.2 It consists of
a) A charge efficiency test.
24
JSS 6140-03 : 2019
(Fifth Revision)
NOTE - The temperature of +70ºC is estimated to stimulate four years of permanent charge at +40ºC.
9.10.5.19.3 Prior to the test, the cell shall be discharged at 0.2 It A at 20ºC ±5ºC to a final
voltage of 1 Volt/cell and stored at an ambient temperature of +40ºC ± 2ºC, for not less than
16 h and not more than 24 h.
9.10.5.19.4 The cell shall then be charged and discharged at constant currents under the
conditions specified while maintained in an ambient temperature of +40ºC ±2ºC or +70ºC
±2ºC Respectively as appropriate.
9.10.5.19.5 The discharge condition A or B may be chosen to suit the user’s requirements.
The discharge is carried out immediately on completion of charging.
9.10.5.19.6 After performing the first charge efficiency test at +40ºC the cell is stored, at
an ambient temperature of +70ºC ±2ºC, for not less than 16 h and not more than 24 h.
9.10.5.19.7 During the ageing period of 6 months +70ºC, precautions shall be taken to
prevent the cell-case temperature from raising above +75ºC by providing forces air drought,
if necessary.
NOTE - Actual cell case temperature, not the ambient temperature, determines the cell performance.
9.10.5.19.8 The discharge duration of the three cycles at +70ºC shall be recorded. Leakage
of electrolyte shall not occur during this test.
9.10.5.19.9 After completion of ageing period, the cells shall be stored for not less than
16 h and not more 24 h at an ambient temperature of +40ºC ±2ºC. Three cycles at +40ºC of
the initial charge efficiency test are then repeated using the conditions specified in table 15.
Duration of the discharge shall be not shall less than the minimum specified in Table 15.
