Posters are placards displayed in a public place announcing or advertising something. Posters are notices,
advertisements and invitations—all in one.

PURPOSE OF POSTERS
⮚ to create social awareness about issues
related to current problems and needs,
⮚ to advertise
⮚ to extend public invitations and display notices

DRAFTING POSTERS
Posters should be
⮚ colourful,
⮚ attractive and
⮚ tempting

They must be drafted carefully


⮚ to attract the attention of the readers,
⮚ excite their imagination and
⮚ influence their minds

Posters are read from a distance.


⮚ Do not give many details in a poster.
⮚ Highlight only important issue/issues.
IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER
Layout
• Visually attractive/Eye Catching
• Title-suggestive/catchy
• Use slogan, jingle or short verse
• Sketch or simple drawings
• Letters of different size and shape
• Proportionate spacing, etc

The theme or subject of the poster


• Description or details associated with the theme
• Essential details like time, date, venue (for an event)
• Name(s) of issuing authority/organisation, etc
Expression
• Phrases, slogans, persuasive language
• Creativity in terms of content and design
• Overall organization: sequencing of the matter
• Observe word limit (50 words)
Sample : Design a poster creating awareness about eradicating polio from the world. Provide the necessary details.

Sample : Design a poster to launch ‘Tree Plantation Campaign’ in the area surrounding your school.
Sample : Design a poster giving information about a book exhibition cum sale to be displayed very soon in your town.
Practice Questions

1. The Directorate of Education, Orissa State, is organising an Essay Contest for all the students of the state. Prepare a suitable poster
which can be sent to different schools for display on their notice-board.

2. Tourism Department, Government of Uttaranchal has launched an ambitious plan to develop adventure sports and eco-tourism
activities in the state. Prepare a suitable poster for display at important public places /publication in newspapers.

3. Make posters to highlight the importance of the Green Movement based on your understanding of the chapter The Ailing Planet.
