1 - SOLUTIONS (Frequently asked questions part II)

1. Derive the relationship between relative lowering of vapour pressure and molar
mass of the solute.

2. How will you determined the molar mass of the solute using elevation of boiling
point.

3. Define the term: (i) Colligative properties (ii) Molal elevation constant (K𝑏)

4. Define the term: (i) Cryoscopic constant (Kf) (ii) Osmotic pressure

5. Define the term: (i) Osmasis (ii) Isotonic solution (iii) Reverse Osmosis

6. Define the term: (i) Abnormal molecular mass (ii) Van’t Hoff factor(i)
(ii) Predict the state of the solute in the solution (a) when ‘i’ is found to be more
than one (b) when ‘i’ is found to be less than one.

7. How is the vapour pressure of a solvent affected when a non-volatile solute is

dissolved in it?

8. What type of deviation is shown by a mixture of ethanol and acetone? Give reason.

9. What happens when acetone is added to pure ethanol?

10. In non-ideal solution, what type of deviation shows the formation of maximum
boiling azeotropes? Draw with neat diagram.

11. What type of azeotropic mixture will be formed by a solution of acetone and
chloroform? Justify on the basis of strength of intermolecular interactions that develop
in the solution.

12. What is meant by positive deviations from Raoult's law? Give an example. What is
the sign of ΔHmix for positive deviation?

13. Blood cells are isotonic with 0.9% sodium chloride solution. What happens if we
place blood cells in a solution containing: (A) 1.2% sodium chloride solution?
(B) 0.4% sodium chloride solution?

14. Give reasons (i) 0.1 M KCl has higher boiling point than 0.1 M Glucose.
(ii) Meat is preserved for longer time by salting.

15. A solution is prepared by dissolving 10g of non-volatile solute in 200g of water. It

has a vapour pressure of 31.84 mm of Hg at 308k. Calculate the molar mass of solute.
(vapour pressure of pure water = 32 mm of Hg)
16. 10 g of glucose is dissolved in I kg of water. At what temperature will this solution
boil. (Kb = 0.52 k kg mol-1 , Boiling point of pure water = 373.15 k)

17. A solution of glycerol [C3H8O3]in water was prepared by dissolving some glycerol
in 500g of water. This solution has a boiling point of 100.420C What mass of glycerol
was dissolved to make this solution? Kb for water = 0.512k kgmol-1

point of 10% glucose in water. If freezing point of pure water is 273.15 k.

21. A solution prepared by dissolving 8.95 mg of a gene fragment in 35 ml of water

has on osmotic pressure of 0.335 torr at 250C. Assuming the gene fragment is non-
electrolyte, determine its molar mass.

22. At 300k, 36 g of glucose present per litre in its solution has an osmatic pressure of
4.98 bar. If the osmotic pressure of another glucose solution is 1.52 bar at the same
temperature. Calculate the concentration of other solution.
