3D Printing Internship Report

Introduction
The 3D Printing Internship was organized to provide students with practical exposure to
modern digital fabrication technologies. The course was conducted over six days and
focused on learning 3D modeling, slicing software, and operating 3D printing machines. The
hands-on sessions allowed students to design, edit, and print their own models, helping
them understand the complete workflow from concept to creation. This experience helped
build both technical and creative skills essential for today’s technology-driven industries.

Acknowledgement
We sincerely thank Mr. Ramamoorthy, who conducted the internship training sessions and
patiently guided us in learning 3D design, file preparation, and 3D printing techniques. His
support and expertise made this internship highly beneficial and motivating for all
participants.

Day-wise Learning

Day 1 – Introduction to 3D Printing

We attended a presentation on what 3D printing is and how it is used in various industries.
The instructor introduced Thingiverse, a website to download 3D designs. We downloaded
a sample design and learned to open it in the SP 3D printing app to set size and color. The
staff demonstrated how to transfer the design to the 3D printer, explaining each step.

Day 2 – Hands-on Practice of Object Printing (Part 1)

Students began practicing with the SP 3D app, editing the downloaded object. Each team of
2 students started their turn on the 3D printer. Due to time limits (14–22 minutes per
print), only a few teams could complete the full print. Remaining students prepared their
designs and waited for their printing slots.

Day 3 – 3D Nameplate Design (Part 1)

We used Tinkercad to design our names using shapes and text tools. Designs were saved in
STL format and adjusted in the SP 3D printing app. Printing began for some teams while
others finalized and saved their models.
Day 4 – 3D Nameplate Printing (Part 2)
The rest of the student teams completed printing their nameplates. The staff helped in
managing file transfer, troubleshooting, and ensuring correct settings. All students got to
see their own designs being printed.

Day 5 – 3D House Design (Part 1)

We learned to create a basic house using Tinkercad’s shapes (boxes, roof, holes, etc.). After
designing the model, we loaded it into the SP 3D printing app to set scale and color. Some
teams began printing their house models.

Day 6 – 3D House Printing (Part 2)

Final teams printed their 3D house models, completing the design-to-print journey. The
internship ended with a review of what we learned, and certificates were distributed.

Skills Learned
- Basics of 3D printing
- Using Thingiverse and Tinkercad for design
- Preparing print files in the SP 3D printing app
- Handling STL files and printer settings
- Operating a 3D printer step-by-step
- Real-world experience in time management and teamwork

Conclusion
The 6-day internship was a rewarding and hands-on experience. Although each object took
time to print, this allowed us to observe the process closely and understand real challenges
in production. We gained confidence in both designing and printing objects independently
and are inspired to explore further in digital manufacturing and creative prototyping.
