Purpose of the Post

Imperial College’s Faculty of Medicine has ambitious plans to grow its online portfolio of educational
programmes and associated activities. The Digital Education Office (DEO) plays a critical role in achieving
this vision through support of digital education to enhance the student learning experience. Our work is
underpinned by the College’s Learning and Teaching Strategy, which supports the development and
evaluation of innovative, evidence-based teaching and learning methods across the College.

The main purpose of the post is to contribute to the development of learning analytics in the Faculty of
Medicine to support educational requirements across a variety of exciting projects. This will also involve
collaborating with other analytics teams at Imperial to develop a College-wide data and analytics platform.

You will define innovative approaches to learning analytics throughout all aspects of the student lifecycle
by investigating, interpreting, classifying and modelling data from a variety of educational and administrative
systems in order to explore and develop data analyses and visualisations for educational, evaluation and
research purposes, ultimately enhancing our students’ learning experience.

You will build up research and data science skills so that further down the line you can focus on building
predictive models that facilitate tailored learning experiences, working closely with prominent researchers
in this field.
Key Responsibilities
Data Analysis and Management

• Explore data tables from administrative systems and digital learning platforms to understand the
information stored and how it is organised, and, for digital learning platform data, how it relates to
user actions,
• Working alongside a data engineer, conduct data validation and cleansing to identify and correct
errors,
• Working alongside a data engineer, develop scripts to support the integration and aggregation of
data,
• Support the development of integrated data models,
• Manage data effectively including generating data extracts, coordinating access to the data and
providing data-related support to colleagues whilst abiding by data policies and legislation,
• Work on scoping data requirements to support the development of software systems, data
integration and data retrieval activities through to the iteration, review and maintenance of data
models,
• Support the integration of new/existing relevant data from sources across the Faculty and College,
using techniques such as data flow mapping and business process modelling,
• Create data workflows to automate data from 3rd party apps into tools such as Databricks and
Power BI,
• Create, manage and maintain metadata and data dictionaries to support college wide integration
of FOM datasets,
• Contribute to investigating the use of AI and ML solutions in data analysis.

Data Insights and Dashboard Development


• Work closely with stakeholders to understand business requirements,
• Support stakeholders to interpret data, analyse results and create reporting mechanisms,
• Develop dashboards to interpret results, provide data insights and eventually make predictions,
• Design and define metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs),
• Create data catalogues, defining data and business definitions, metrics, dimensions and models,
• Support investigation of educational research questions related to the data,
• Explore and identify areas of interest, data black spots and data enhancement opportunities,
• Review, validate and explore ingested data and structures,
• Develop and maintain documentation on dashboard and data guidance.

Data Modelling and Prediction


• Leveraging novel datasets to develop predictive models with machine-learning tools.
• Develop predictive tools that can be integrated into dashboards,
• Collaborate with data analysts and other stakeholders within the College to facilitate the growth of
learning analytic modelling.

Information Governance and Ethics


• Engage with team members to ensure they are aware of best practices and risk implications
related to data processing, management and ethics,
• Work with senior colleagues and the DEO team to ensure proper reviews are performed on
information and data systems for compliance against organisational policies, legislations and risk
and to provide secure data services,
• Make recommendations for implementing any required changes and leading and managing such
changes.

Training, Best Practices and Other Duties


• Support training for business users to use data tools and dashboards,

• Work to the highest standards as part of a team, delivering against defined plans, making
decisions which influence the success of deliverables and team objectives, and collaborating
regularly with team members, users and customers,
• Participate in appropriate Faculty and College groups and committees concerned with data
analysis and learning analytics,
• Keep abreast of developments in data analysis and learning analytics in HE and beyond to
improve student and staff experience,
• Undertake any other duties and responsibilities commensurate with the grade of the post as
requested by the line manager and the Head of DEO.

Person Specification

Requirements Essential (E)/


Candidates/post holders will be expected to demonstrate the following: Desirable (D)
Education
Degree in a relevant field or equivalent professional experience in a E

Experience
Relevant and current hands-on experience of managing data in a professional E
setting, covering infrastructure, data warehousing/repositories, software engineering
and business intelligence
Successful track record in the interpretation and classification of data E
Experience of identifying and undertaking data analysis and data modelling activities E
within a complex technological environment, extracting meaningful insights from the
data
Proven experience in gathering user requirements, conducting needs assessments, E

Professional experience in research or in a data analytics orientated position in D
