TECHNOLOGY GRADE 9
Question 1
To design and make a model of a lifting/hoisting machine that will be used to lift
the ancient dog-headed Egyptian water clock to the first floor.
1.2 Specifications (at least 3) (3)
The machine can be of Mechanical , Electrical or Pneumatic/hydraulic systems
Consists of one of the mechanical elements: levers, linked levers, wheels, cams,
cranks, pulleys and / or gears
Consists of one of the mechanical or electrical control device such as a cleat
, ratchet and pawl, or a switch
Dimensions and size
(Any other relevant specifications)
1.3 Constraints (at least 3) (3)
Elevator cannot be used to move the water clock
Human hands may not carry the water clock
Gloved hands may move the clock to a platform for transport
Human handling of the artifact should be minimal.
(Any other relevant constraints)
Question 2
Draw TWO initial ideas of the machine and you ONLY need to draw the hoisting part.
Idea 1 (4)
Mark allocation
Criteria Mark allocated Mark obtained
The mechanical element is clearly indicated 1
The mechanical or electrical control device is 1
clearly indicated
The system looks really to be a hoisting/lifting 1
artifact
Neatness 1
Idea 2 (4)
Mark allocation
Criteria Mark allocated Mark obtained
The mechanical element is clearly indicated 1
The mechanical or electrical control device is 1
clearly indicated
The system looks really to be a hoisting/lifting 1
artifact
Neatness 1

Question 5
State whether the following statements are True of False
5.1 Dynamic forces causes objects to vibrate (constantly move) _True _ (1)
5.2 A bending beam of a structure experiences compression and torsion forces
__False (1)
5.3 An idler gear between two spur gears synchronizes the gears and will also affect
their velocity ratio. _False __ (1)
Question 6
Match the correct term in COLUMN A with the correct description in COLUMN B.
Write down the correct letter of the description in the Answer column (4 x 1 = 4)
COLUMN A ANSWER COLUMN B
Question 7
7.1 The mechanism shown in figure 4 is an important device and adds additional
safety in lifting systems. Name the parts labelled A and B.
A. _Pawl (1)
B. _Ratchet (1)
Figure 1
7.2
Study figure 5 and answer questions that follow
In the lifting pulley system below a load of 48N is lifted a distance of 1m
Figure 2
48
¿ ¿ 12 N
4
7.2.2 What is the mechanical advantage of this lifting pulley system? (2)
MA = no. of falls = 4
7.2.3 How far must you pull the rope for the load to be lifted a distance of 1m
Input distance
MA= Input distance = MA x Output distance
output distance
=4x1
= 4m
Question 8
8.1 Elevators and stairwell in a building consume space. True or False. Circle the
correct answer. (1)
8.2 Why mechanical or electrical control devices such as cleats, ratchet and pawl are
included into machines? (2)
8.3 The impact to the society of the elevator going off unnecessarily is
positive/negative . Underline the correct answer. (1)
8.4 Which two (2) structures are found in the building used by people to move from
one floor to the other. Elevator/ lift /staircase/ escalator/ steps/ (Any two
correct) (2)
8.5 It is said the elevator’s sprinkler system is going off unnecessarily, who can be
disadvantaged in accessing the first floor? Mention any three (3) types of people
TOTAL = 72
