B. Motivation

Ask students on the definition of logarithm.

The logarithm of 𝑎 with base 𝑏 is denoted by 𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑏 𝑎, and is defined as 𝑐 =

𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑏 𝑎 if and only if 𝑎 = 𝑏𝑐.

Exponential and logarithm are the inverses of each other. This means that
you can transform exponential to logarithmic form.

C. Presentation

Present the learning objective.

Ask students to share their ideas about how A, B, and C are similar, and how
they are different.

A) log3 (x − 2) = 5

B) ln x ≥ 9

C) y = − log ½ x

Possible responses: A, B, and C all involve expressions with

logarithms. A and B involve only one variable, but C expresses a relationship
between two variables. A and C involve an equality, but B involves an
inequality.
D. Discussion/Abstraction

Logarithmic function with base b defined by f(x) = logbx is the inverse

function of the exponential function with base b whose value is always
positive. That is,
y = logbx if and only if x = by .

The logarithmic function with the base 10 is called the common logarithmic
function. To simplify the notation, we shall agree that when the base of a
logarithm is not written, it is understood to be 10. That is, log y = log10

The logarithmic function with base e is the natural logarithmic function and
is denoted by the special symbol ln x read as “the natural logarithm of x”.
Examples:
f(x) = log2 x g(x) = 3 – ½ ln( x + 1)
y = 2log x-3

Logarithmic equation is an equation that involves logarithm.

Examples:
log0.5( x+ 3)= -5 log264 = 6
log71= 0

Logarithmic inequality is an inequality in which one or both sides involves

logarithm
Examples:
log5 (1-x) < 625 log( 2x + 5) > log( 3x – 1)
log0.5( 7x – 3) ≥ -2

E. Exercises

Identify if the following are logarithmic (A) equation, (B) inequality or (C)
function.
1. 𝑙𝑜𝑔4 3𝑥 = 5
2. 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑙𝑜𝑔2 4𝑥 + 1
3. 8 ≤ 𝑙𝑜𝑔2 3𝑥 − 3
4. 𝑦 = 𝑙𝑜𝑔5 2𝑥
5. 𝑙𝑜𝑔7 3𝑥 + 𝑙𝑜𝑔7 2 = 1
6. 𝑙𝑜𝑔6 3𝑥 > 2

F. Generalization
How will you define logarithmic equation?

How can you distinguish a logarithmic equation from a logarithmic

inequality?

When do you say that the given is a logarithmic function?

Can you identify the symbol/s that will help you determine the
difference among logarithmic equation, inequality and function
