Module Title : Rigid Body Dynamics
Module Code : GSE 264m
Semester : Summer Semester 2018

Answer all of the following questions:

Question 1 (Total Mark: 12)

The wheel rolls without slipping with a constant
angular velocity of ω = 10 rad/s. Determine the
magnitude of the velocity and acceleration of
point B at the instant shown.

Question 2 (Total Mark: 12)

Determine the moment of inertia of the overhung crank about the x axis. The
material is steel having a density of ρ = 7860 kg/m3.

Question 3 (Total Mark: 12)
The pendulum consists of a 10-kg uniform disk and a 3-kg uniform slender rod. If it is
released from rest in the position shown, determine its angular velocity when it rotates
clockwise 90°.

Question 4 (Total Mark: 12)

a. Explain with suitable sketches, the main differences between finite rotations
and infinitesimal rotations. (4 Marks)

b. At the instant θ = 60, the gyrotop has three components of angular motion
directed as shown and having magnitudes defined as: (8 Marks)
Spin: ωs = 10 rad/s, increasing at
the rate of 6 rad/s2
Nutation: ωn = 3 rad/s, increasing
at the rate of 2 rad/s2
Precession: ωp = 5 rad/s,
increasing at the rate of 4 rad/s2
Determine the angular velocity
and angular acceleration of the
top.

Question 5 (Total Mark: 12)

a. Show that for plane rotation the normal component of acceleration an = -ω2 r.
(4 Marks)

b. A bowler projects a 200-mm-diameter ball of mass 6 kg along an alley with a

forward velocity v0 of 5 m/s and a backspin ω0 of 9 rad/s. Knowing that the
coefficient of kinetic friction between the ball and the alley is 0.10, determine the
time t1 at which the ball will start rolling without sliding. (8 Marks)
