rue, she calls out to her to show her the track jackers nest, so she cuts it off so it falls on

That he left the career group
Katniss believes the Gamemakers started the fire to drive the tributes together and create
action for the viewers since things were too quiet in the arena.
2. Why does Katniss call down from the tree to the tributes?
Katniss calls down to taunt the Careers because they can’t climb the tree she’s in.
She wants to show them she’s not afraid and make them look foolish for failing to reach her.
3. Describe how and with whose help Katniss manages to save herself from the Careers.
Katniss is stuck in a tree with the Careers below. Rue, in a nearby tree, silently signals her
toward a tracker jacker nest above her.
Katniss cuts the branch holding the nest, dropping it on the Careers. The wasps attack them,
forcing them to flee.
Glimmer dies, and Katniss, though badly stung and hallucinating, manages to escape.
She is saved partly by Rue’s help and partly by her own courage and quick thinking.
4. Katniss receives help from other people as well. What help and from whom?
Rue gives Katniss medicine and care after the tracker jacker attack.
Rue also shares food, knowledge, and companionship, becoming her ally.
Katniss retrieves a bow and arrows from Glimmer’s body—her most valuable weapon in the
arena.
6. Katniss and Rue form an alliance and tell each other things about their districts. Why
does Katniss think the Gamemakers would probably not show that discussion?
Katniss thinks the Gamemakers won’t show their talk because it includes honest criticism
of the Capitol and the hardships in the districts, especially the lack of food and freedom.
That kind of truth would be seen as rebellious or threatening to the Capitol’s image.
Rue reminds her of Prim, making Katniss feel protective toward her.
8. What does Rue think about Peeta and what does she know about him for sure?
Rue says she hasn’t seen Peeta, but she knows for sure that he’s no longer with the
Careers.
She’s not sure whether he’s injured, hiding, or planning something else.
9. What other important piece of information does Katniss gain from Rue?
Rue tells Katniss that the Careers are guarding a stockpile of supplies near the Cornucopia.
She also mentions the boy from District 3 has set up some sort of trap using mines.
Rue will set fires in different parts of the forest to draw the Careers away.
While they’re distracted, Katniss will sneak in and destroy the supplies they’re guarding.
Yes, the plan succeeds. Rue’s fires cause a distraction, and Katniss reaches the Cornucopia.
She observes the landmines and cleverly sets them off by dropping apples onto the supply
pile.
The explosion destroys all the Careers’ supplies and seriously weakens their position.
