Describing things and objects

In IELTS speaking part 2, you might be asked to describe an object. For

example:
x Describe something you bought recently.
x Describe a gift you gave or received.
x Describe something you own which is important to you.
Choose something easy, like a mobile phone:
I'm going to describe my mobile phone. I bought it online / in a mobile
phone shop / it was a present from...
I use the phone to keep in touch with friends and family, for
communication by voice, text and email. It has various features like
video, MP3 player, wireless Internet, digital camera and games. It's easy
to share photos and music. I use it for almost everything, it even has a
calendar that reminds me about appointments.
My phone is an essential part of my life. It holds my contacts, my
photos, my music collection. I've got instant access to my favourite
websites. It's like having my whole life in my pocket. I couldn't live
without it.
Describing a person
Describe a person you admire. You should say:
x who the person is
x what he or she is like
x and why you admire him or her.

I'm going to talk about my father because he has had a big

influence on my life. When I was growing up, he was always a
good example for me. He is hard-working, patient, and
understanding. He also has a good sense of humor and gets
along well with other people. I hope I’ve learned some of these
things from him.
I really admire my father because he raised me and my
brothers/sisters in a good way. He was sometimes strict, but
always fair, and I can always ask him for advice. He showed us
how important it is to work hard and stay positive. I remember
he used to leave for work early in the morning and come home
late, but he always found time to spend with me and my
brothers/sisters.
Describe a website that you often use. You should say:
x what type of website it is
x how you found out about it
x what it allows you to do, and why you find it useful
One website that I use a lot is Facebook. It's a social networking
site that helps people stay in touch with their friends and family.
You can also use it to share your thoughts, photos, and videos.
I found out about Facebook when one of my friends invited me
to join. He sent me an email, and I created an account. I’ve been
using it regularly since then.
Facebook lets you write status updates, post pictures, and send
messages to your friends. I think it’s very useful because I can
keep up to date with what my friends are doing. I also use it to
organize events and save my photos. I believe social media is
now an important part of our daily lives.
Describe your favourite season in your country. You should say
- when that season is
- what the weather is like at that time of year
- how that season is different from other seasons
- and why it is your favourite season.

My favourite season in my country is winter. It usually starts in

November and ends around March, but I especially like the coldest part
— maybe January and February.

The weather during winter is very cold. The temperature often goes
below zero, and sometimes it snows a lot. In the past few years, we’ve
had heavy snow that blocked roads and even closed schools. I remember
one morning last winter when I looked outside and everything was
white. It looked amazing.

What makes winter different from other seasons is the snow. Without
snow, it can be hard to tell the difference between winter, autumn, and
spring because they all feel a bit cold.

I love winter because I enjoy the snow and the way everything looks
when it’s white. I also like this season because we have Christmas and
New Year, which are very special celebrations for me.
Describe a future plan. You should say
- what the plan is
- when you thought of the plan
- who is involved in the plan
- and say how you think you will achieve the plan.

I’d like to talk about a plan I have for the future. I want to buy a
professional camera and improve my photography skills. Right now, I
only use my phone to take photos, but I’ve noticed that it has some
problems, especially with zoom and dark light.

I came up with this plan a few weeks ago at a friend’s wedding. I took
some nice pictures of the event, but I couldn’t get good quality when I
tried to take photos from far away or in low light. That’s when I decided
I wanted a better camera.

This plan involves me and one of my friends who knows a lot about
cameras. I’ll ask him for advice before I buy anything.

To achieve this plan, I need to save some money first. Once I buy the
camera, I will practice a lot, take many photos, and learn by doing. I
hope to become a much better photographer over time.
Describe a journey you went on. You should include in your
answer:
x Where you went on your journey
x Why you went to this particular place
x What did you do and with whom
x Why you enjoyed your journey or not
I want to talk about a journey I took last year. I went to
Uzbekistan with my wife. We really wanted to visit
Samarkand and Bukhara because we saw nice pictures and
our friends said these cities were beautiful.
We bought train tickets, booked hotels, packed our things, and
started our trip. Before we went, we looked for interesting
places to visit.
In Uzbekistan, we went to the Registan Square and visited old
mosques and madrasas. We also went to Bukhara, a very old
and pretty city. We tried Uzbek food like plov and kebabs.
Every evening, we walked through the city and relaxed in small
parks. We also saw people singing and dancing in the street.
I enjoyed the journey very much. Everything was beautiful, and
I was happy to be there with my wife. That made the trip even
better.
Describe an interesting conversation you had with someone you didn't
know. You should say
- who the person was
- where the conversation took place
- what you talked about
- and explain why you found the conversation interesting.

I want to talk about an interesting conversation I had a few weeks ago in

a music shop.

I was walking in the city centre when I saw a shop with many musical
instruments in the window. I was curious, so I went inside to look
around. On the second floor, I saw many acoustic guitars. A friendly
shop assistant came to me and asked if I had any questions.

I told him that I used to play guitar, but I stopped many years ago. I was
interested in the different guitars in the shop. He explained a lot to me.
He talked about the brands, how the guitars were made, the types of
wood, and the sound of each one. He also talked about the prices.

I really enjoyed the conversation because the shop assistant knew a lot
about guitars. He loved talking about them. Even though I said I didn’t
want to buy anything, he was happy to help me. He even played some
guitars so I could hear the difference.
