3 Connext - September 2010

Introduction
Priva Connext is a complete process automation system for the horticulture industry where
continuity, connectivity, compatibility and controllability play a central role.

Continuity
• Using advanced technologies and following automation standards guarantees a long service
life for Connext in the horticulture industry.
• Due to the modular design, small to very large systems can be put together and future
expansion can easily be realized.
• The system design with built-in safety features guarantees reliability, stability and continuity
of the process automation system.
• You retain overview of the structure of the networks and the system design as a result of
which support is easier and down-time is limited in the event of malfunction.

Connectivity
Connext uses one central and multifunctional communications network to which controllers,
operating stations and installations can easily be connected to suit your requirements.

Compatibility
The current Intégro process computers are easy to fit into Connext. This maximises the future
of existing Priva process computers.

Controllability
The Connext Process Controller has an extensive automatic control library. All essential processes,
climate, water, energy and management are integrated in this library. This allows the grower to
achieve the optimal yield from his horticulture business.

System architecture
Connext is a modular system, built around and for connecting to one central and multifunctional
communications network. This makes a decentralised structure of the technical installation possible.
The relationship between the system components is shown in the illustration below.

The system is functionally divided into three different levels: management level, automation level
and field level.
• The management level contains all solutions for setting the processing data and to save,
display and analyse the processing information. The management level is not discussed further
in this document.
• The automation level comprises one or more Connext Process Controllers and local operating
stations. The engineering control is carried out at this level and information is made available.
Refer also to Automation level (page 6).
• The field level comprises I/O near the sensors and actuators for measuring and controlling
processes. For more detailed information refer to Field level (page 25).

4 Connext - September 2010

Connext can easily be expanded by adding one or more system components. Using more Connext
Process Controllers results in additional processing capacity, subdivision of the various process
controls and an increase in operational security. Operating can take place at a number of locations
by increasing the number of operating stations. I/O and field equipment can be expanded by
adding additional modules or devices to the local network, I/O net or BACnet MS/TP. In addition
the capacity of the I/O and field equipment to be connected can be expanded by using additional
Transrouters.
Using the Industrial Ethernet as a multifunctional communications network facilitates
communicating using different types of messages over the same cable. This facilitates connecting
and using different types of devices alongside each other as well as benefiting from future
developments. In addition to this the Industrial Ethernet provides the option to increase the
operation security of the network by introducing redundancy, in the shape of one or more ring
networks, for instance. This can reduce the loss of communications due to a cable break to a
minimum.

5 Connext - September 2010

Automation level

The automation level is the central link in the Connext process automation system; it forms the
connection between the management level (office environment) and the field level (green house
and engineering room) which facilitates the exchange of data between these environments. At
the same time it separates both environments as a result of which processes and actions at the
management level cannot interrupt the critical processes at field level. This provides a high degree
of operational security and guaranteed speed.

6 Connext - September 2010

Industrial Ethernet

The Industrial Ethernet is the essential component of the Connext system architecture. This is
the local area network (LAN) at automation level with the following characteristics:
• The Ethernet can be used for multiple purposes. I/O, operating installations, interfaces with
applications, remote servicing or servicing using a laptop for example.
• The Ethernet connects the cabinets in the system.
• Because the Ethernet is used for critical operating processes it is strictly separated from the
LAN for office automation.

Priva has selected Ethernet for industrial environments for Connext; the Industrial Ethernet. The
associated components meet the minimum requirements for the operational security of the system
(network infrastructure, mounting method and environmental conditions in industrial
environments). In addition, the Industrial Ethernet can support ring networks using HiPER Ring
and regulate message traffic. This can increase the operational security still further. A software
package is available for supervision over the network and the connected devices; refer to Ethernet
monitoring application Industrial HiVision (page 66).

The Industrial Ethernet is constructed from the following components:

• passive network components:
• F/UTP or fibre optic cables for fixed connections
• patch panels for fibre optic cables
• F/UTP termination units for F/UTP cables
• patch cables for the connection between patch panels or termination units and active
network components
• active network components:
• Industrial Ethernet switches

7 Connext - September 2010

Priva, in collaboration with Voltec, has selected passive network components for use within the
Industrial Ethernet (refer to the chapters below). Voltec can provide you with further information
in this regard. In addition you can order prefabricated fibre optic cables directly from Voltec. Refer
to www.voltec.nl. Priva can supply all other network components.

• You only need to replace the Ethernet switches to upgrade Fast Ethernet (100BASE-FX)
with fibre optic cables to Gigabit Ethernet (1000BASE-LX). Replacing the cabling is
not necessary. This is on condition that the fibre optic cable is not longer than 550
metres.
• For a full duplex connection using fibre optic cables use cables with a minimum of 4
optical fibres. This way you can hold 2 fibres in reserve for any cable break or future
expansion.

Ethernet switches
The Industrial Ethernet switch handles the connection between the management level and the
field level. As it is used for critical operating processes the risk of failure must be minimal. Using
Industrial Ethernet switches limits the risk to a minimum.

Unmanaged and managed Ethernet switches

Two variants of Ethernet switches can be supplied: unmanaged switches and managed switches.
Unmanaged switches only send messages from incoming ports to the correct outgoing port.
Managed switches, on the other hand, include functionality for ring networks (HiPER-Ring), network
management, monitoring, protection and alarms to support an operationally secure network.

Example of a system with a ring network and managed Ethernet switches

Use a system with managed Ethernet switches only if:

• installation of a ring network is necessary for operational security;
• there is intensive network traffic;

Example of a system with managed Ethernet switches

If a Priva Office Direct client is connected to a Connext Industrial Ethernet, connect both the Priva
Office Direct client and the server to a managed Ethernet switch. Managed ethernet switches are
also used for devices that are connected to a Connext Industrial Ethernet but which do not fall
within Connext's process automation system.

Example of a system with unmanaged Ethernet switches

9 Connext - September 2010

Unmanaged Ethernet switches are used for:
• systems with a single cabinet and a limited amount of network traffic; the CPC, the LDA and
a PC with Priva Office Direct and any office applications are connected to a single switch;
• systems with a limited number of cabinets and connected I/O modules or BACnet devices
with limited network traffic.

Example of a system with Priva Office Direct clients via the LAN for office automation

Priva Office Direct clients can be connected via the LAN for office automation. It is not permitted
to connect the Industrial Ethernet to other unmanaged Ethernet switches.

When the system configuration above is used with fibre optic cables a minimum of 6 optical fibres
are required:
• 2 optical fibres for the connection between the CPC and the Transrouter;
• 2 optical fibres for the connection between Priva Office Direct and the company LAN;
• 2 optical fibres in reserve in case of cable break or future expansion.

Other Ethernet components

In addition to Ethernet switches (see next paragraph) Priva also supplies other Industrial Ethernet
components. Examples are workgroup switches for mounting in a (19") rack, SFP transceivers to
be able to connect switches to 100 Mbit/sec fibre optic networks, routers and components for
VPN/firewalls and wireless Ethernet.

If you use Ethernet components other than those selected by Priva, Priva will not provide
direct support.

Optical fibre patch panel

The optical fibre patch panel allows you to connect fibre optic cables outside cabinets to Ethernet
switches inside cabinets. On the panel you can use prefabricated LC-Q couplers to select which
optical fibres in the cable you actually want to use. Dust caps are available to cover recesses that
are not used.

The patch panel can be used in combination with prefabricated fibre optic cables which can be
ordered from Voltec. No special tools are required for cable assembly then. Refer to www.voltec.nl.
If you do not use prefabricated fibre optic cables then the supplied splice cassette can be used
to join fibre optic cables to each other or to store unused cable lengths.

Field level

Connext uses RS485 networks for communications between the automation level and the field
level:
• I/O commands are passed from the CPC to the I/O modules via the Transrouter using the
I/O net;
• BACnet MS/TP is the connection (via the Transrouter) between the CPC and BACnet devices.

The field level connects you to the management level in the office environment, using the Industrial
Ethernet, so that data from measuring and control systems can be made available to the office
environment and vice versa.

The RS485 networks are primarily intended for connections within the cabinets and for connections
at compartment level or within the engineering room. The Industrial Ethernet is used for mutual
communications between the cabinets.

25 Connext - September 2010

I/O net

The CPC and the I/O modules exchange data mutually through the Transrouter via the I/O net.
The I/O net is primarily intended for communications over shorter distances (maximum 300 m
per segment), within the cabinets for instance and for connections between small cabinets. Use
the Industrial Ethernet for communications over longer distances and connections between larger
cabinets.

The following components can be used for installing the I/O net:
• I/O net terminator module (page 28)
• I/O net connection board module (page 29)
• I/O remote connection board module (page 30)
• I/O net repeater module (page 32)

Four types of I/O modules and one amplifier are available for communication over the I/O net in
Connext:
• I/O module AI16/DO32 (page 34)
• I/O module DO64 (page 37)
• I/O module EC/pH (page 40)
• I/O module Meteo (page 43)
• I/O AI amplifier (page 45)

Priva, in collaboration with Voltec has selected data cables for use in the I/O net. Voltec
can provide you with further information in this regard. See www.voltec.nl.

BACnet MS/TP

BACnet MS/TP means Building Automation and Control network. The BACnet MS/TP protocol is
used for RS485 networks, where MS/TP means master-slave/token passing. The network connects
the CPC (via the Transrouter) to BACnet devices such as sensors and Priva BACnet E-measuring
boxes, and also to motors for curtain and vent control for instance, where the data profile is
supported by Priva.

The following components are important for the BACnet MS/TP:

• BACnet MS/TP cabinet connection box (page 48)
• BACnet MS/TP field connection box (page 50)

Priva, in collaboration with Voltec, has selected data cables for use in the BACnet MS/TP.
Voltec can provide you with further information in this regard. See www.voltec.nl.

The components above can only be used in a network that has been installed in accordance
with the instructions in the Installing Connext and Commissioning Connext manuals.

BACnet MS/TP cabinet connection box

The BACnet MS/TP cabinet connection box can be used to quickly and easily connect a BACnet
MS/TP outside a cabinet and supply bias voltage. The BACnet MS/TP cabinet connection box
comprises 7 connectors. Six connectors are mutually connected. Of these one connector is used
to connect to the Transrouter. The other connectors can be used in the future to connect BACnet
devices inside the cabinet to the BACnet MS/TP and to provide them with a power supply. The
seventh connector is used to connect to the BACnet field connection box.

If you want to use the second BACnet MS/TP network on the BACnet field connection box
then you have to use two BACnet MS/TP cabinet connection boxes.

BACnet MS/TP field connection box

The BACnet MS/TP field connection box can be used:

• to install two networks using an F/UTP cable and use the second network as a reserve, as a
result of which the number of connected BACnet devices can be increased later;
• to connect one or more BACnet devices, the BACnet E-measuring box for instance, to BACnet
MS/TP, as a result of which connections can be concealed in waterproof housing;
• to install BACnet MS/TP as a bus network without branches as a result of which BACnet MS/TP
can function independently of the connected devices;
• to provide power supply to connected BACnet devices by connecting an external power supply
as a result of which both network and power supply can be connected in the same connection
box;
• to connect test equipment, a cable tester or a device to analyse the network for instance.

The BACnet MS/TP field connection box is available in two variants:

• BACnet MS/TP field connection box single for connecting 2 BACnet devices (one per network)
• BACnet MS/TP field connection box multi (refer to the image above) for connecting a maximum
of 6 BACnet devices (spread across 2 networks)

BACnet MS/TP terminator

A BACnet MS/TP terminator must be installed in the first and last BACnet
MS/TP field connection box. This terminates the two BACnet MS/TP networks
that you have installed using F/UTP cable to prevent distortion and loss of
signals in the network segment and to provide bias voltage.

System configuration
The system architecture of Connext facilitates solutions that optimally fit every situation. During
system design you weigh the requirements for operational security, installation, maintenance,
expansion and initial costs against each other.

Steps Explanation and points for attention

1 Ensure that there is a plan of the system required Make this plan yourself or have it made. You will need the plan during the
with the location of the cabinets, the devices to installation and commissioning also. This is another reason why it is
be connected and the operating stations, extremely important that the plan is correct and complete.
including their mutual distances and cabling.
2 Assemble the information required for the system The following details are involved:
configuration. • number of inputs and outputs for measuring and controlling per
cabinet
• number of inputs and outputs for measuring and controlling in the
complete system
• number and type of I/O modules per cabinet
• number of BACnet devices to be connected per cabinet
• number of BACnet devices in the complete system

3 Calculate the number of CPCs required. An extra CPC is required if:

• the number of outputs to be assigned is > 999
• the number of inputs to be assigned is > 999
• the number of I/O modules to be addressed is > 50
• the number of I/O nets is > 16
• the number of BACnet devices to be connected is > 256
• the number of software objects per design is > 65,536 (on delivery
of a new system the threshold is 75% of 65,536 because of future
expansion)
• the number of installed client applications PCU terminal on LDAs,
PCs with Priva Office Direct Client and/or service laptops is > 8
• you want to limit the risk due to failure of one CPC
• you want to increase the clarity of the total system
• you want to limit the interruption when updating the system software
by spreading this software across a number of CPCs (see step 4
also)

4 Determine the logical split of the control software • Determine the technical division of the complete installation.
per CPC (if applicable). • Determine the target group of the division; software user,
installer/service engineer, or a combination thereof.
• An example is a split into water, climate and energy or in
compartments. This can considerably simplify navigation through
the software for the user.
• Where there is a division from the perspective of the installer/service
engineer other factors can also play a role, such as clarity and
minimum interruption (refer to the final point of step 3 also).
• The ability to easily copy the software settings from one CPC to
another CPC is also a factor that should be taken into account.

5 Determine the network infrastructure of the • Ensure that the Industrial Ethernet is separated into two separate
Industrial Ethernet and the network for the office IP domains (Connext and office environment) by including a second
environment (management level). network card in the Priva Office Direct Server.
• Install a ring network if:
• the operational security of the entire system must not depend
on the failure of a single component
• there are more than 1000 allocated inputs and outputs in the
complete system where
• the allocated inputs and outputs can be spread across a
number of CPCs
• each BACnet device counts as 5 allocated inputs or
outputs
• Use a maximum of 50 Ethernet switches in one ring network.
• Use managed switches
• when using Priva Office Direct Clients within the Industrial
Ethernet
• when using third-party applications
• Determine the cable(s) required:
• Select an F/UTP cable, category 6 if the distance is < 100 m.
• Select a fibre optic cable (multi-mode) if the distance is > 100
m:
• maximum cable length at a transmission speed of 100
Mbit/sec (100BASE-FX): 5,000 m
• maximum cable length at a transmission speed of 1
Gbit/sec (100BASE-LX): 550 m

6 Determine the network infrastructure of the I/O • Use the I/O net especially inside the cabinet or for connection to
net (if applicable). small cabinets, such as Connext cabinet 300x400x210.
• Do not connect more than 24 I/O modules per I/O net.
• The maximum distance per network segment is 300 metres. If a
longer range is required then use an I/O net repeater.
• Create an I/O net per function within one cabinet, for instance, one
for climate and one for water. Remember here that it is possible to
connect a maximum of 2 I/O nets per Transrouter with a maximum
of 24 I/O modules per Transrouter.

7 Determine the network infrastructure of the • Do not connect more than 16 BACnet devices per BACnet MS/TP.
BACnet MS/TP (if applicable). • The maximum distance per network segment is 750 metres.
• The length of the connection cable on one BACnet device must not
exceed 10 metres.
• The length of the cable from the BACnet cabinet connection box to
a BACnet field connection box (outside the cabinet) must not exceed
10 metres.

68 Connext - September 2010

8 Calculate the number of Transrouters • 2 RS485 networks to be connected per Transrouter: I/O net or
BACnet MS/TP.
• Do not connect more than 24 I/O modules per Transrouter, spread
across one or two I/O nets.
• Do not connect more than 32 BACnet devices per Transrouter, spread
across two networks.

9 Check whether the configuration of the Connext The following limits are involved:
system falls within the system limits. • 64 CPCs
• 96 BACnet MS/TPs with a maximum of 48 Transrouters
• 4 CPCs per Priva Office Direct Server
• 63 CPCs per LDA to be operated
• 64 Priva Office Direct Servers
• 9 Priva Office Direct clients

10 Repeat step 3 and the subsequent steps until the When doing so once again carefully weigh such factors as operational
optimal system configuration has been created. security, installation, expansion and initial costs per project against each
other.
