Continuity
• Using advanced technologies and following automation standards guarantees a long service
life for Connext in the horticulture industry.
• Due to the modular design, small to very large systems can be put together and future
expansion can easily be realized.
• The system design with built-in safety features guarantees reliability, stability and continuity
of the process automation system.
• You retain overview of the structure of the networks and the system design as a result of
which support is easier and down-time is limited in the event of malfunction.
Connectivity
Connext uses one central and multifunctional communications network to which controllers,
operating stations and installations can easily be connected to suit your requirements.
Compatibility
The current Intégro process computers are easy to fit into Connext. This maximises the future
of existing Priva process computers.
Controllability
The Connext Process Controller has an extensive automatic control library. All essential processes,
climate, water, energy and management are integrated in this library. This allows the grower to
achieve the optimal yield from his horticulture business.
System architecture
Connext is a modular system, built around and for connecting to one central and multifunctional
communications network. This makes a decentralised structure of the technical installation possible.
The relationship between the system components is shown in the illustration below.
The system is functionally divided into three different levels: management level, automation level
and field level.
• The management level contains all solutions for setting the processing data and to save,
display and analyse the processing information. The management level is not discussed further
in this document.
• The automation level comprises one or more Connext Process Controllers and local operating
stations. The engineering control is carried out at this level and information is made available.
Refer also to Automation level (page 6).
• The field level comprises I/O near the sensors and actuators for measuring and controlling
processes. For more detailed information refer to Field level (page 25).
The automation level is the central link in the Connext process automation system; it forms the
connection between the management level (office environment) and the field level (green house
and engineering room) which facilitates the exchange of data between these environments. At
the same time it separates both environments as a result of which processes and actions at the
management level cannot interrupt the critical processes at field level. This provides a high degree
of operational security and guaranteed speed.
The Industrial Ethernet is the essential component of the Connext system architecture. This is
the local area network (LAN) at automation level with the following characteristics:
• The Ethernet can be used for multiple purposes. I/O, operating installations, interfaces with
applications, remote servicing or servicing using a laptop for example.
• The Ethernet connects the cabinets in the system.
• Because the Ethernet is used for critical operating processes it is strictly separated from the
LAN for office automation.
Priva has selected Ethernet for industrial environments for Connext; the Industrial Ethernet. The
associated components meet the minimum requirements for the operational security of the system
(network infrastructure, mounting method and environmental conditions in industrial
environments). In addition, the Industrial Ethernet can support ring networks using HiPER Ring
and regulate message traffic. This can increase the operational security still further. A software
package is available for supervision over the network and the connected devices; refer to Ethernet
monitoring application Industrial HiVision (page 66).
• You only need to replace the Ethernet switches to upgrade Fast Ethernet (100BASE-FX)
with fibre optic cables to Gigabit Ethernet (1000BASE-LX). Replacing the cabling is
not necessary. This is on condition that the fibre optic cable is not longer than 550
metres.
• For a full duplex connection using fibre optic cables use cables with a minimum of 4
optical fibres. This way you can hold 2 fibres in reserve for any cable break or future
expansion.
Specifications
Network specifications

Maximum number of Ethernet switches to be connected • 50 in a ring network (HiPER Ring requirement)
• 50 in a line network (because of response time)
Cabling specifications
If a Priva Office Direct client is connected to a Connext Industrial Ethernet, connect both the Priva
Office Direct client and the server to a managed Ethernet switch. Managed ethernet switches are
also used for devices that are connected to a Connext Industrial Ethernet but which do not fall
within Connext's process automation system.
Example of a system with Priva Office Direct clients via the LAN for office automation
Priva Office Direct clients can be connected via the LAN for office automation. It is not permitted
to connect the Industrial Ethernet to other unmanaged Ethernet switches.
When the system configuration above is used with fibre optic cables a minimum of 6 optical fibres
are required:
• 2 optical fibres for the connection between the CPC and the Transrouter;
• 2 optical fibres for the connection between Priva Office Direct and the company LAN;
• 2 optical fibres in reserve in case of cable break or future expansion.
If you use Ethernet components other than those selected by Priva, Priva will not provide
direct support.
Priva has chosen the following unmanaged Ethernet switches which have been tested extensively
and provide the best performance for Connext:
• SPIDER 5TX with 5 connections for F/UTP cables (100 Mbit/sec)
• SPIDER II 8TX with 8 connections for F/UTP cables (100 Mbit/sec)
• SPIDER 4TX/1FX with 4 connections for F/UTP cables (100 Mbit/sec) and 1 for fibre optic

The optical fibre patch panel allows you to connect fibre optic cables outside cabinets to Ethernet
switches inside cabinets. On the panel you can use prefabricated LC-Q couplers to select which
optical fibres in the cable you actually want to use. Dust caps are available to cover recesses that
are not used.
The patch panel can be used in combination with prefabricated fibre optic cables which can be
ordered from Voltec. No special tools are required for cable assembly then. Refer to www.voltec.nl.
If you do not use prefabricated fibre optic cables then the supplied splice cassette can be used
to join fibre optic cables to each other or to store unused cable lengths.

Connext uses RS485 networks for communications between the automation level and the field
level:
• I/O commands are passed from the CPC to the I/O modules via the Transrouter using the
I/O net;
• BACnet MS/TP is the connection (via the Transrouter) between the CPC and BACnet devices.
The field level connects you to the management level in the office environment, using the Industrial
Ethernet, so that data from measuring and control systems can be made available to the office
environment and vice versa.
The RS485 networks are primarily intended for connections within the cabinets and for connections
at compartment level or within the engineering room. The Industrial Ethernet is used for mutual
communications between the cabinets.
The CPC and the I/O modules exchange data mutually through the Transrouter via the I/O net.
The I/O net is primarily intended for communications over shorter distances (maximum 300 m
per segment), within the cabinets for instance and for connections between small cabinets. Use
the Industrial Ethernet for communications over longer distances and connections between larger
cabinets.
The following components can be used for installing the I/O net:
• I/O net terminator module (page 28)
• I/O net connection board module (page 29)
• I/O remote connection board module (page 30)
• I/O net repeater module (page 32)
Four types of I/O modules and one amplifier are available for communication over the I/O net in
Connext:
• I/O module AI16/DO32 (page 34)
• I/O module DO64 (page 37)
• I/O module EC/pH (page 40)
• I/O module Meteo (page 43)
• I/O AI amplifier (page 45)
Priva, in collaboration with Voltec has selected data cables for use in the I/O net. Voltec
can provide you with further information in this regard. See www.voltec.nl.

The I/O net repeater increases the range of the I/O net segment (300 metres) with a subsequent
segment of 300 metres. In addition the repeater provides electrical isolation of the two network
segments before and after an I/O net repeater in the I/O net. This is important if an I/O net is
extended to another room where the risk of indirect lightning strike is high.

BACnet MS/TP means Building Automation and Control network. The BACnet MS/TP protocol is
used for RS485 networks, where MS/TP means master-slave/token passing. The network connects
the CPC (via the Transrouter) to BACnet devices such as sensors and Priva BACnet E-measuring
boxes, and also to motors for curtain and vent control for instance, where the data profile is
supported by Priva.
Priva, in collaboration with Voltec, has selected data cables for use in the BACnet MS/TP.
Voltec can provide you with further information in this regard. See www.voltec.nl.
The components above can only be used in a network that has been installed in accordance
with the instructions in the Installing Connext and Commissioning Connext manuals.

Cabling specifications
The BACnet MS/TP cabinet connection box can be used to quickly and easily connect a BACnet
MS/TP outside a cabinet and supply bias voltage. The BACnet MS/TP cabinet connection box
comprises 7 connectors. Six connectors are mutually connected. Of these one connector is used
to connect to the Transrouter. The other connectors can be used in the future to connect BACnet
devices inside the cabinet to the BACnet MS/TP and to provide them with a power supply. The
seventh connector is used to connect to the BACnet field connection box.
If you want to use the second BACnet MS/TP network on the BACnet field connection box
then you have to use two BACnet MS/TP cabinet connection boxes.

4 Determine the logical split of the control software • Determine the technical division of the complete installation.
per CPC (if applicable). • Determine the target group of the division; software user,
installer/service engineer, or a combination thereof.
• An example is a split into water, climate and energy or in
compartments. This can considerably simplify navigation through
the software for the user.
• Where there is a division from the perspective of the installer/service
engineer other factors can also play a role, such as clarity and
minimum interruption (refer to the final point of step 3 also).
• The ability to easily copy the software settings from one CPC to
another CPC is also a factor that should be taken into account.
5 Determine the network infrastructure of the • Ensure that the Industrial Ethernet is separated into two separate
