ECC 584 INTEGRATED DESIGN PROJECT

Case Study Project
1.0 Introduction
Integrated Design Project (IDP) expose students to engineering design and practices in real
projects. The course includes complex engineering problems and design systems,
components, and processes integrating core areas and meeting specified needs with
appropriate considerations for public health and safety, cultural, societal, and environmental.
There are three continuous assessments in IDP: (1) Capstone Project (Group project) 50%
and (2) Case Study Project (Individual project) 10%, and (3) Common Test 40%. This
document provides assessment details for Case Study Project.
2.0 Descriptions for CO, PO, Bloom’s Taxonomy, WP, WK and SDGs
Course Outcomes (CO)
CO3: Justify with informed reasoning and consideration on consequent responsibilities to the society.
(PO6) (C5)
CO4: Accommodate the concept of sustainability in the project design. (PO7)(C5)

Programme Outcomes (PO)

PO6: Apply reasoning informed by contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and
cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to professional engineering practice and
solutions to complex engineering problems.
PO7: Understand and evaluate the sustainability and impact of professional engineering work in the
solution of complex engineering problems in societal and environmental contexts. (WK7)

Bloom’s Taxonomy Domain and Level of Difficulty

Cognitive Domain - C5 (Evaluation)

Complex Engineering Problem Characteristics (WP, WK)

WP1: in-depth engineering knowledge at the level of one or more of WK3, WK4, WK5, WK6 or WK8
which allows a fundamental based, first principles analytical approach;
Required WKs are:
WK1: A systematic, theory-based understanding of the natural sciences applicable to the discipline
and awareness of relevant social sciences.
WK3: A systematic, theory-based formulation of engineering fundamentals required in the
engineering discipline.
WK4: Engineering specialist knowledge that provides theoretical frameworks and bodies of
knowledge for the accepted practice areas in the engineering discipline; much is at the forefront of
the discipline.
WK7: Knowldege of the role of engineering in society and identified issues in engineering practice in
the discipline, such as the professional responsibility of an engineer to public safety and sustainable
development.
WK8: Engagement with selected knowledge in the current research literature of the discipline,
awareness of the power of critical thinking and creative approaches to evaluate emerging issues.

WP4: Unfamiliar or infrequently encountered issues

WP5: Extent of applicable codes

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

3.0 Learning Outcomes

At the end of the Case Study Project, the students should be able to:
i. Explain the roles and responsibilities of civil engineers in dealing with complex
engineering problems (infrequently encountered) and address public safety. (PO6)
ii. Evaluate sustainable solutions for complex engineering problems based on
previous professional engineering experiences. (PO7)

4.0 Tasks in Case Study Project

The case study project is an individual assessment. Students will be given a main theme
which is an infrequently encountered civil engineering problem as given in the document
“Case Study Project Description”. Students are required to choose a real case study that
meets the given main theme and propose solutions to all the tasks in Table 1 in a technical
report. Students must comprehend the roles and the professional responsibility of a civil
engineer to public safety, propose sustainable solutions and evaluate the impacts of
engineering activity in societal and environmental contexts based on previous professional
engineering experiences. (WP1, WP4, WP5, WK1, WK3, WK4, WK6, WK7, WK8, SDG12).

in the solution of complex engineering problems.

4 Evaluation of Impacts
Evaluate implications & consequences of the selected sustainable
solutions in societal and environmental contexts based on previous
professional engineering experiences.
Note: Students can obtain professional engineering experiences from
reliable sources (i.e. technical reports, journals, interviews,
guidelines, code of practices etc.) and should be appropriately
acknowledged. Evidence of the reliable sources if obtained from
primary sources (i.e. diaries, letter, email, interview) shall be attached
in appendices.

5.0 Assessment
The assessment of the Case Study Project is based on the performance criteria matrix in
Appendix A: Performance Criteria Matrix for Case Study Report (10%). The Case Study
Project is assessed by lecturer.

6.0 Format of Report

A specific format for the technical report is attached in Appendix B.

Appendix (If any)

Figures and tables

Illustrations such as maps, charts, graphs, drawings, diagrams, and photographs are referred as
figures. All figures must be clear and of high quality. Figures must be numbered using Arabic numeric.
A caption should be located at the bottom of the figure. If the caption is written in a single line, it should

be positioned after it has been cited for the first time in the text.

Figure 1 The text within the figure is Times New Roman, with equivalent height of 10 point.

All tables must be numbered using Arabic numeric. A caption should be positioned at the top of the
table. If the caption is written in a single line, it should be centred. If the caption is written more than one
line, it should be aligned to the left. A table should be positioned after it is being cited for the first time
in the text.

Equations
Equations should be numbered consecutively throughout the paper and centred. The equation number
is enclosed in parentheses and placed flush right, as in (1).
sin 𝑎 + sin 𝑏 = 𝑥𝑦 (1)
