QUESTION 2 : MAPWORK CALCULATIONS AND TECHNIQUES
2.1 Interpret the map scale on the topographical map into a word scale.
1 cm on the map represents 500 m on the ground. (Concept)  (2 x 1) (2)
2.2 Calculate the actual straight-line distance in kilometres of the runway in block C3.
Show ALL calculations. Marks will be awarded for calculations.
Actual distance = Map distance x Map scale
100 000
= 3 cm x 50 000 
100 000

= 1,5 km 

Alternative
Map distance x Map scale

= 3 cm  x 0,5 km  = 1,5 km 
(3 x 1) (3)
(Accept other mathematically correct paths that a learner may take to reach
the correct answer.)

2..3 Use the information on the topographic map, to determine the magnetic declination
for 2017. Show ALL calculations. Marks will be awarded for calculations.

Difference in years = 2017 – 2009

8 years 

Mean annual change = 7ʹ W 

Total change = 8 yrs x 7ʹW
56ʹW 

Magnetic declination for 2017 = 25º07ʹW + 56ʹW

26º03ʹ W of True North (5 x 1) (5)

2.4 Calculate the Area covered by orthophoto in a topographic map. Show ALL your
calculations in 𝑘𝑚2. Marks will be awarded for calculations.
Area = Length x Breath

= (11 cm x 0.5) x (9.4cm x 0.5)

= 5,5 km x 4.7 km

= 28.85 𝑘𝑚2 (5 x 1)(5)
