OBJECTIVES:
1. To Expose the students to determine the characteristics of the DC Machines and transformer by
performing experiments on these machines.
2. To provide hands on experience to evaluate the performance parameters of the Dc Machines and
transformer by conducting suitable tests.
LIST OF EXPERIMENTS:
1. Open circuit and load characteristics of DC shunt generator- critical resistance and critical speed.
2. Load characteristics of DC compound generator with differential and cumulative connections.
3. Load test on DC shunt motor.
4. Load test on DC compound motor.
5. Load test on DC series motor.
6. Swinburne’s test and speed control of DC shunt motor.
7. Hopkinson’s test on DC motor – generator set.
8. Load test on single-phase transformer and three phase transformers.
9. Open circuit and short circuit tests on single phase transformer.
10. Sumpner’s test on single phase transformers.
11. Separation of no-load losses in single phase transformer.
COURSE OUTCOMES:
1. Construct the circuit with appropriate connections for the given Dc Machines / Transformer.
2. Experimentally determine the characteristics of a different types of DC machines.
3. Demonstrate the speed control techniques for a dc motor for individual applications.
4. Identify suitable methods for testing of transformer and dc Machines.
5. Predetermine the performance parameters of transformers and DC motor.
6. Understand Dc Motor starters and 3 phase transformer connections.

1. Ammeter (0 - 2A) MC 1
2. Ammeter (0 - 10A) MC 1
3. Voltmeter (0 - 300V) MC 1
400 Ω/1.1 A,
4. Rheostat Wire wound 1 each
1000 Ω/0.8 A
PRECAUTION
All the switches are kept open initially.
The motor field rheostat is kept at minimum resistance position.
The generator field rheostat is kept at maximum resistance position
PROCEDURE
OPEN CIRCUIT CHARACTERISTICS:-
5
By varying the field rheostat of the motor, the speed of the motor is adjusted
to the rated speed of the generator.
By varying the generator field rheostat, voltmeter and ammeter readings
are taken in steps upto 120% of rated voltage.
After bringing the generator rheostat to maximum position, field rheostat
of motor to minimum position, the DPST switch is closed.
Draw Rc line, such that it is tangent to the initial portion of O.C.C. at
rated speed and passes through origin.
