22. SURFACE TENSION:


The property due to which the free surface of liquid tends to have minimum surface area and behaves
like a stretched membrane is called surface tension. It is a force per unit length acting in the plane of
interface between the liquid and the bounding surface i.e., S = F/L, where F = force acting on either

side of imaginary line on surface and L = length of imaginary line. Surface tension decreases with rise
in temperature. Highly soluble impurities increase surface tension and sparingly soluble impurities
decreases surface tension.

ii. An artificial satellite orbiting the earth in very thin atmosphere loses its energy gradually due to
dissipation against atmospheric resistance, however small. Why then does its speed increase
progressively as it comes closer and closer to the earth?
iii. Comets move around the sun in highly elliptical orbits. The gravitational force on the comet due to
the sun is not normal to the comet’s velocity in general. Yet the work done by the gravitational force
over every complete orbit of the comet is zero. Why?

27. Derive a relation between angular momentum, moment of inertia and angular velocity of a rigid body. If
angular momentum is conserved in a system whose moment of inertia is decreased, will its rotational
kinetic energy be conserved?

28. (a) When a gas is heated, its temperature increases. Explain it on the basis of kinetic theory of gases.
(b) Calculate the kinetic energy per molecule and also rms velocity of a gas at 1270C.
Given, kB= 1.38 x 10-23 J/molecule/K and mass per molecule of the gas= 6.4 x 10-27kg.

29. Define co-efficient of thermal conductivity. Write its SI unit and dimensional formula. The thermal
conductivity of copper is four times that of brass. Two rods of copper and brass of same length and
cross sectional area are joined end to end. The free ends of copper are at 00C and that of brass rod at
1000C. Calculate the temperature of junction at equilibrium. Neglect radiation losses.

30. (a) A particle of mass 10g is describing SHM along a straight line with a period of 2s and amplitude of
10 cm. What is the kinetic energy when it is (i) 2cm (ii) 5 cm from its equilibrium position?
(b) A particle is executing SHM of amplitude A. At what displacement from the mean position, is the
energy half kinetic and half potential?

33. (a) Derive an expression for work done in an adiabatic expansion of an ideal gas.
(b) Calculate the fall in temperature of helium initially at 150C, when it is suddenly expanded to 8 times
its initial volume.
