The document outlines an experiment on AM-SSB-SC modulation and demodulation using Matlab Simulink, supervised by Dr. Juma Salah. It explains the theoretical aspects of single-sideband modulation, its advantages, disadvantages, and applications in radio communications. The practical part involves creating a Simulink model to observe outputs, concluding that SSB modulation is efficient for transmitting analog voice in radio communication.

The Theoretical Part :
The modulation like SSB or single-sideband modulation is extensively used
in the radio spectrum of short wave or HF portion for radio communications in
two ways. This communication uses SSB modulation, and the applications
of this range from marine, HF point to point transmissions, military as well as
radio amateurs or radio hams. This modulation is derived from AM
(amplitude modulation) because; it overcomes several drawbacks of AM.
Generally, this modulation is used for various purposes like voice transmission
and where radio communication in two ways using the analog signal is
necessary.

What is SSB Modulation?

The single-sideband modulation definition is a modulation which is used for

transmitting information like an audio signal through radio waves. This
modulation is used in radio communications by using transmitter power &
more bandwidth efficiently for an alteration of AM (amplitude modulation).
There are many radio communication devices available in the market which
use single sideband radio like SSB Tx, SSB Rx, and SSB transceiver.
SSB-
modulation
There are several variations are used for SSB modulation like lower
sideband(LSB), upper sideband (USB), double sideband (DSB), Single
Sideband Suppressed Carrier (SSB SC), Vestigial Sideband (VSB), and SSB
reduced carrier.

Power Measurement of SSB

It is frequently required to describe the o/p power of an SSB transmission. For
instance, it is essential to identify the transmitter power which is used for
mutual radio communication to allow its efficiency for specific applications.
The power measurement used for an SSB signal is not easy because the
actual o/p power depends upon the stage of the modulating signal. So to
overcome this, PEP (peak envelope power) can be employed.

This receives the RF envelope power for the conduction & the peak level
signal can be used at any time. The peak envelope level for power can be
calculated in Watts. These are just the power stages related to 1 Watt
otherwise 1 mW.

Advantages and Disadvantages of SSB Modulation

The advantages of single-sideband modulation mainly include the following.

 The occupied spectrum space otherwise BW is smaller than

amplitude modulation & DSB signals.
 Broadcast of an additional number of signals can be allowable.
 Power can be saved
 The transmission of the high signal can be done
 The amount of noise present is less
 Loss of signal is less
The disadvantages of single-sideband modulation mainly include the
following.

 The discovery & generation process of the single-sideband signal is

complex.
 Signal quality will be affected when the transmitter & receiver of
SSB have outstanding frequency strength
Applications
The applications of SSB modulation include the following.

 This modulation is used in where power-saving and bandwidth are

required.
 It used in air, land & maritime communications.
 Used in radio & point to point communications
 Used in communications like telemetry, TV, & radar
 It is used in military communications like amateur radio, etc.

.Switch on the computer & click on the MATLAB icon-
Go to start at the bottom of the command window, then select -
“Simulation” then go to library browser and drag it into creating file. (or)
Once you open the Matlab then click on the Simulink icon. Go to file and
.select new and then select model. You will get a new window
.Arrange the functional blocks as shown in simulink model-
.Assign required parameters to each functional block-
.Observe the outputs on scope-

Conclusion:
Thus, SSB modulation is used for transmitting analog voice for mutual
radio communication on the HF segment of the radio spectrum. It is used
most effectively in terms of power and spectrum when we evaluated to
other forms. So this modulation provides an efficient solution for mutual
.radio communication as it gives an important development inefficiency
