GE3271-ENGINEERING PRACTICES LAB

SYLLABUS
COURSE OBJECTIVE:
The main learning objective of this course is to provide hands on training to the students in:
1. Drawing pipeline plan; laying and connecting various pipe fittings used in common
household plumbing work; Sawing; planning; making joints in wood materials used in
common household woodwork.
2. Wiring various electrical joints in common household electrical wire work.
3. Welding various joints in steel plates using arc welding work; Machining various simple
processes like turning, drilling, tapping in parts; Assembling simple mechanical assembly
of common household equipment’s; Making a tray out of metal sheet using sheet metal
work.
4. Soldering and testing simple electronic circuits; Assembling and testing simple electronic
components on PCB.

GROUP-A (CIVIL AND ELECTRICAL)


PART I CIVIL ENGINEERING PRACTICES

PLUMBING WORK:
1. Connecting various basic pipe fittings like valves, taps, coupling, unions, reducers,
elbows, and other components which are commonly used in household.
2. Preparing plumbing line sketches.
3. Laying pipe connection to the suction side of a pump
4. Laying pipe connection to the delivery side of a pump.
5. Connecting pipes of different materials: Metal, plastic and flexible pipes used in
household appliances.

WOODWORK:
1. Sawing,
2. Planning and
3. Making joints like T-Joint, Mortise joint and Tenon joint and Dovetail joint

WOODWORK STUDY:
1. Studying joints in door panels and wooden furniture
2. Studying common industrial trusses using models.

PART II ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING PRACTICES


1. Introduction to switches, fuses, indicators and lamps-Basic switch board wiring with
lamp, fan and three pin sockets
2. Staircase wiring
3. Fluorescent Lamp wiring with introduction to CFL and LED types.
4. Energy meter wiring and related calculations/ calibration
5. Study of Iron Box wiring and assembly
6. Study of Fan Regulator (Resistor type and electronic type using Diac/Triac/quadrac)
7. Study of emergency lamp wiring/Water heater

GROUP-B (MECHANICAL AND ELECTRONICS)


PART III MECHANICAL ENGINEERING PRACTICES

WELDING WORK:

1. Welding of Butt Joints, Lap Joints, and Tee Joints using arc welding.

2. Practicing gas welding.

BASIC MACHINING WORK:

1. (Simple)Turning. 2. (Simple) Drilling. 3. (Simple) Tapping.

ASSEMBLY WORK:

1. Assembling a centrifugal pump. 2. Assembling a household mixer.

3. Assembling an air conditioner.

SHEET METAL WORK:


1. Making of a square tray

FOUNDRY WORK:

1. Demonstrating basic foundry operations.

Part IV Electronic Engineering Practices

SOLDERING WORK:

1. Soldering simple electronic circuits and checking continuity.

ELECTRONIC ASSEMBLY AND TESTING WORK:

1. Assembling and testing electronic components on a small PCB.

ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT STUDY:

1. Study an element of smart phone.

2. Assembly and dismantle of LED TV.

3. Assembly and dismantle of computer/ laptop.

COURSE OUTCOME:
Upon completion of this course, the students will be able to:
1. Draw pipeline plan; lay and connect various pipe fittings used in common household
plumbing work; Saw; plan; make joints in wood materials used in common household
woodwork.
2. Wire various electrical joints in common household electrical wire work.
3. Weld various joints in steel plates using arc welding work; Machine various simple

 Wear uniform, shoes & safety glasses


 Please follow instructions precisely as instructed by your supervisor.
 If any part of the equipment fails while being used, report it immediately to your
supervisor.
 Students should come with thorough preparation for the experiment to be conducted.
 Students will not be permitted to attend the laboratory unless they bring the practical
record fully completed in all respects pertaining to the experiment conducted in the
previous class.
 Practical record should be neatly maintained.
 Students should obtain the signature of the staff-in-charge in the observation book after
completing each experiment.
 Theory regarding each experiment should be written in the practical record before
procedure in your own words.

DONT’S
 Do not touch hot workpiece.
 Do not start the experiment unless your setup is verified & approved by your supervisor.
 Do not leave the experiments unattended while in progress.
 Do not crowd around the equipment’s & run inside the laboratory.
 Don’t wear rings, watches, bracelets, or other jewelry.
 Don’t wear neck ties or loose turn clothing of any kind.
 Do not eat or drink inside labs.
 Do not wander around the lab and distract other students.
 Do not use any machine that smokes, sparks, or appears defective.

DO’s

 Be familiar with your lab assignment before you come to lab. Follow all written and verbal
instructions carefully. Observe the safety alerts in the laboratory directions. If you do not
understand a direction or part of a procedure, ask the teacher before proceeding.

 Always perform the experiment or work precisely as directed by teacher/instructor.

 Don’t forget to bring calculator, graph sheet and other accessories when you come to lab.

 Before performing experiment read instrument manual carefully.

 Students must stay away from the yellow strip marked around the machines/apparatus while
the machine is running.

 Leave the lab cleaner than you found it.

DON’Ts
 In the absence of instructor, no student shall be allowed to work in the laboratory.

 Absolutely no running, practical jokes or horseplay is allowed in the laboratories.

 The use of personal audio or video equipment is prohibited in the laboratory.

 The performance of unauthorized experiments is strictly forbidden.

 Do not play with valves, screws, and nuts of any apparatus.

 Shoes must cover the entire foot. Open toed shoes and sandals are inappropriate footwear in
laboratories.

 Make sure that all equipment is clean and returned to its original place.

 Don’t use mobile phones during lab hours.

COURSE OBJECTIVE:

1. To study the mechanical properties of metals, wood, and spring by testing in laboratory.

2. To verify the principles studied in fluid mechanics and machinery theory by performing experiments in
laboratory.

UNIT – I STRENGTH OF MATERIALS

OUTCOMES:

On completion of the course, the student is expected to be able to

1. Determine the tensile, torsion and hardness properties of metals by testing

3. Apply the conservation laws to determine the coefficient of discharge of a venturi meter and finding the
friction factor of given pipe

4. Apply the fluid static and momentum principles to determine the metacentric height and forces due to

AIM OF OBJECTIVES:

 To acquaint the skills and practical experience in handling 2D drafting and 3D modeling
software systems, standard drawing practices using fits and tolerances.
 To prepare assembly drawings both manually and using standard CAD packages.
 To Prepare standard drawing layout for modeled parts, assemblies with BoM.

keys, fasteners – Reference to handbook for the selection of standard components like bolts,
nuts, screws, keys, etc. – Limits, Fits – Tolerancing of individual dimensions IS919-
Specification of Fits – Preparation of production drawings and reading of part and assembly
drawings, basic principles of Geometric Dimensioning &Tolerancing.
