METHOD STATEMENT FOR ROOF WATER PROOFING WORKS
PROJECT:- PEPSICO GF PROJECT NALBARI ASSAM
The purpose of this document’s to present in detail the methodology sequence &
materials/equipment needed to carry out roof waterproofing work. It includes
preparatory works, setting out installation of waterproofing system,
precautionary measures to be taken, site safety inspection and related
accessories to complete the works in the accordance with project specification,
shop drawing and material approved by the client.
2. SCOPE
The scope of work described in this method statement is applicable for
waterproofing system for all roof slab areas as per the approved drawing.
3. MATERIAL REQUIRED
4. MATERIAL DESCRIPTION
SuperThermoLay® is a five layered system with Atactic Polypropylene (APP)
modified non-woven polyester reinforced weighing 140 gm / m2 bituminous
membrane (2, 3, 4 & 5 mm) for superior waterproofing. The torch side of the
membrane is covered with polyethylene film for protection of the membrane. The
polymer modification of bitumen with APP results in an excellent resistance to hot
and cold temperatures. SuperThermoLay® is supplied in following variants:
• Plain finish with thermo-fusible polyethylene film on both surfaces.
• Mineral / natural grey slate finish with thermo-fusible polyethylene film on one
surface, and mineral / natural gray slate on the other surface.

ShaliTex® Primer WB is a water based modified bituminous primer that seals pores in
surfaces such as concrete and improves the adhesion of bituminous materials that are to be
applied to the substrate. It is suitable for brush / spray application.
5. EQUIPMENT
LPG gas cylinder and torch
Rollers and brushes
Electrical hand mixer
Knife to cut membrane
Trowels
Wire brush
Mixing cans
Spatulas
6. Procedure
Substrate Preparation
Inspect the surface conditions.
New concrete should be cured for at least 28 days.
The concrete surface should be levelled, tough and should not have hollow
areas or pot holes.
Check hollowness by hammering and repair such areas as well as pot holes
using polymer modified cement sand mortar.
Allow to cure for at least 72 hours before application of membrane.
Clean the surface so that it is free from loose dust, particles, oil etc. by
booming or vacuum cleaner.
Cementations or Mineral based substrates must be prepared mechanically
using abrasive blast cleaning or scarifying equipment to remove cement
laitance and to achieve an open textured surface.
Loose friable material and weak concrete must be completely removed and
surface defects such as blowholes and voids must be fully exposed.
Build-up proper gradient of the surface with PCC admixed with ShaliPlast
IW.

Ensure that level of all drain mouth is lower than deck slab level by at least
15 mm.
Waterproofing Application
• Apply a coat of ShaliTex Primer WB @ 0.3 - 0.5 L / m2 and allow it to dry till
tack free.
• Apply ShaliTex® Primer WB by brush / spray gun on prepared surface.
• Allow it to dry for 2 - 4 hr
• After the primer applied surface gets dried align SuperThermoLay® on the
substrate by unrolling the membrane.
• Re-roll the roll into its original form so that alignment is not disturbed.
• Point the torch towards the primed surface and then on the underside of the
membrane. Torch till the compound reaches its softening points.
• The best visual to confirm this is when the embossing on the membrane starts to
disappear.
• Roll the membrane forward while firmly pressing it to the substrate so that it
bonds Keep overlap margin for minimum 100 mm between two adjoining
membranes for end laps and a minimum of 75 mm for side laps.
•The membrane shall taken up to 300 mm on vertical parapet area.

• Ensure that a constant flow of bitumen is maintained across the whole width of
the roll and that a bead of bitumen is extruded from all edge which demonstrates
that a good seal has obtained.
• All angles & abutments up stands should be sealed with extra care to ensure
perfect bondage. Seal the edges well into grooves & protect to seal with a
polysulphide / polyurethane sealant, namely, ShaliSeal PS GG / ShaliSeal PU GG.
SuperThermoLay® applied all over the terrace must be finished with a coating of
Super Silver Shield for non-trafficable area. For foot trafficable area, overlay with
PCC dosed with ShaliPlast IW of 50 mm thick / tiles loosely laid or fixed.
7. WATER TEST
After the final inspection, any visible damages shall be repaired by welding
a patch of same membrane extending at least 100 mm Frome the edge of the
damaged area. The roof will be flooded with water for a depth of 25mm
minimum at highest point and 100 mm maximum foe a period of 24 hours.
Roofs drain shall be plugged to the flooding.
The soffit of the roof slab shall be checked for any seepage or dampness. If
there is any seepage/dampness, then the repair work shall be carried out and
again the leak test shall be repeated for the repaired portion as per the above
procedure.
Upon successful completion of the water test then water shall be drained of
from roof and the membrane allowed for draying before subsequent
materials are placed on it.
8. RESPONSIBILITIES
The Project Manager Shall review and approve the methodology for the
execution of the work and ensure that the works are implemented in an efficient
manner. The Project manager is generally responsible for the overall project
execution quality and safety.

The Site Engineer/Supervisor shall ensure that the works are carried out
according to the design approved drawing and procedures. He will be responsible
on the behalf of the contractor to coordinate check and follow up the work and
ensure that proper sequence of activities are followed in order to achieve target
completion. He will ensure that safe work practices are followed for all works
under his care. Coordinates with other trades/services and ensure all MEP services
are in place and all necessary inspection have been carried out.
The QA/QC Engineer shall ensure that works are carried out in accordance to the
requirement of quality control. He shall ensure that all ITP requirements are met.
The QA/QC Engineer shall ensure that all necessary ITR and Checklist for
inspection and testing are processed and put forward to the company Engineer for
notification. He shall ensure that material being used are in accordance with
project specification and approved by the client and PMC.
The HSE Engineer will monitor and implement all HSE related issues. He shall
ensure that all necessary requirement regarding health, safety and environment
concerns risk assessment are met and adhered to. To HSE Engineer shall ensure
that all permits and authorization are on hand prior to starting any site operation.
9. Precautions
• Do not apply during rain or extreme temperature.
• Any naked flame should be kept away from gas cylinders.
• Avoid abuses which may lead to puncturing of membrane.
• Do not overheat SuperThermoLay® membrane i.e., avoid heating when it starts
smoking.
• Apply parapet to parapet to envelope the entire building for long term
performance.
