Inclusion and Universal Design for Learning
Inclusion and Universal Design for Learning
CAST (Center for Applied Special Technology) describes universal design as "a blueprint for creating
flexible goals, methods, materials, and assessments that accommodate learner differences." Universal
design for learning examines multiple approaches to meeting the needs of diverse learners with the ideal
of making education "inclusive and effective for all." http://www.cast.org/research/udl/index.html.
Education professionals must meet the challenge of determining what each child needs through
screening and assessment. They then must include all children in their instructional activities, yet be able
to individualize and customize in order to meet these needs in an inclusive environment.
Multiple means of representation to give learners various ways of acquiring information and
knowledge
Multiple means of action and expression to provide learners alternatives for demonstrating
what they know
Multiple means of engagement to tap into learners' interests, challenge them appropriately, and
motivate them to learn
