Hi there!

I’ve decided to start writing a blog. My friends say it’s a piece of cake. I just hope I can
think of interesting things to say each week and that I’ll get lots of followers! Anyway, for
my first post, I want to tell you a little bit about myself. [1]

My name’s Mia, and I’m currently 19 years old, living in a small, pretty town that’s always
full of life. My life has been quite full, too, but not always in a good way. In fact, it has
been like a rollercoaster, filled with ups and downs. At various times, I’ve been anxious,
depressed, relieved, and finally grateful, as you will learn. [2]

I grew up as an only child on a farm, which meant a lot of adventures on my own in our
fields, creating stories about imaginary friends, since there were no real children my age for
miles around. I was taught at home until the three of us moved to the town when I was 10,
where I immediately joined the drama club. [3]

I was just starting high school when my doctor told me that I had a rare illness. It meant
spending lots of time in hospitals and missing out on school and drama activities. At the
time, it seemed like the end of the world, but the experience taught me a lot about being
strong mentally and about how we can overcome problems if we think in a positive way.
I’m much better now. [4]

Forgetting about all that now, I love spending time outdoors, exploring new hiking trails.
Perhaps sometime I’ll share with you the itinerary for my last hike in the mountains. It was
awesome! I also love reading – any reading I can get my hands on, really. My current
favorite is a mystery novel that I can’t seem to put down!

That’s all for this week. I’ll have to start thinking about a topic for my second blog entry.
Maybe this is not a piece of cake after all, but I’m sure I’ll get my head around it.
29. What does “it” mean in paragraph 2?
A. A good way.
B. Life in Mia’s town.
C. Mia’s life.
D. Mia’s town.

30. Which of these statements is NOT true, from the information in paragraph 3?
A. Mia did not go to school as a young child.
B. Mia didn’t know her parents.
C. Mia had no brothers or sisters.
D. Mia had no real friends as a young child.

31. Where should this phrase go in the text? “I feel like a million bucks.”
A. [1].
B. [2].
C. [3].
D. [4].

32. Why does the writer begin paragraph 5 with “Forgetting about all that now,”?
A. She has almost forgotten the problems she had to overcome.
B. She has difficulty putting her illness behind her.
C. She wants to move onto another topic.
D. She wants to write about another problem in her life.

33. What does the writer mean by her last sentence?

A. Writing a blog is not much fun, but she has to do it.
B. Blog entries don’t seem as if they are as easy to write as her friends told her.
C. She doesn’t know if she will be able to produce a blog each week.

indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 34 to 40.

Childhood
Rosa Parks was born on February 4, 1913, in Montgomery County, Alabama, which is one of the
southern states of the USA. While she was growing up, Rosa experienced a lot of unfairness because
of her skin color. This was common in the southern states at that time. In her hometown, she went to a
school for black children that didn’t have many things needed for high-quality teaching, but Rosa was
smart and did well.

Early life
Rosa didn’t become famous because of her work. Instead, she became known for standing up for what
is right. She worked as a seamstress, a person who sews clothes, but what really mattered to her was
equal rights for black people as for white people. Rosa joined the NAACP, an important group that
was working to make life better for black people across America.

[…]
Rosa Parks did something very brave on December 1, 1955. She was riding on a bus and didn’t move
when a white person wanted her seat. This was against the laws of the state then, but Rosa was tired of
the unfairness. Her brave act led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott, when black people stopped using
the buses to protest against the rules. As a result, the government of Alabama had to stop giving white
people special rights on its buses. The president of the Montgomery Improvement Association at the
time was Martin Luther King, and the boycott made him a national and then international figure for
equal rights.

Death
Rosa Parks died on October 24, 2005. She was 92 years old. Many people were sad, because she was a
hero not just in America but anywhere that people were fighting for equal rights. Rosa Parks showed
that one person can make a big difference. Today, people still look up to her when they want to make
things better or fight against what is wrong.
