Engineering Mechanics (AMN-11102): Tutorial Sheet-4 (Beams)

B.Tech. (I Semester; ECM, and Materials Engg.), Session 2024-2025
NOTE: (1) Please draw the SFD & BMD even if not asked.
**********************************************************************************************************
1) Obtain the relations between load intensity, shear force and bending moment at any arbitrary
position of the beam. What kind of changes in SFD & BMD of the beam do you expect because of
application of point load or external moment on any arbitrary point of the beam? Derive the
expressions also.
2) The beam is subjected to the distributed load and the couple as shown in Fig.1. If M is slowly
increased starting from zero, at what value Mo, will contact at B change from the lower surface
to upper surface?
3) Determine the force and moment reaction at A for the beam (Fig.2) which is subjected to the load
combination shown.
4) A cantilever beam supports the variable load as shown in Fig.3. Calculate the supporting force
RA and moment MA at A.
5) Determine the shear V at a section B between A and C and the moment M the support A (Fig.4).
6) Draw the shear and moment diagrams for the loaded beam (Fig.5). What are the values of the
shear and moment at the middle of the beam?
7) The shear force in kN in a certain beam is given by V = 33x - 7x3 where x is the distance in meters
measured along the beam. Determine the corresponding variation with x of the normal loading
w in kN per meter of length. Also determine the bending moment M at x = 1.5 m if the bending
moment at x = 0.5m is 0.4 kN.m.
8) Draw SFD & BMD for the beam shown in Fig.6. An internal hinge is provided at G. (a =0.5m, q0
= 60 kN/m, F = 80 kN, M0 = 10 kNm)
9) Determine the distance ‘a’ as a fraction of the beam’s length L locating the roller support so that
the moment in the beam at B is zero (Fig.7).
10) The angle strut is welded to the end C of the I-beam and support the 1.6-kN vertical force (Fig.8).
Determine the bending moment at B and the distance ‘x’ to the left of C at which the bending
moment is zero. Also construct the moment diagram for the beam.
11) A continuously supported beam ABCD of length 20m is applied with a concentrated load
P=16kN and an externally applied moment M0=16 kN-m as shown in Fig.9. The beam is hinged
at A and roller supported at C & D. An internal hinge is provided at B. Calculate the support
reactions. Also draw SFD & BMD.
12) From the SFDs shown in Fig. 10 (a-h), obtain the loading and the BMD for corresponding beam.
13) Draw SFD & BMD for the beam shown in Fig.11. Also determine the shear force and bending
moments at A & B.
14) Draw SFD & BMD for the overhanging beam shown in Fig.12.
15) The beam in Fig.13 will safely support shear forces and bending moments of magnitudes 2 kN
and 6.5 kN-m, respectively. Based on this criterion, can it safely be subjected to the loads F=1 kN,
C=1.6 kN-m?

(7) B.M. (x=1.5m) = 24.65 kN-m (9) L/3 (10) -0.4kN-m, 0.2m (11) 2, 9 & 5 kN at A, C & D respectively
