B. Establishing Purpose of the Lesson

2. Unlocking Content Vocabulary:

The teacher will assist the learners to analyze and arrange the phrases
together to define each word below correctly.

Define: 2. Percent by mass is ________________.

Percent by mass is the amount of solute in a given

mass of solution, expressed as grams of solute
per 100 grams of solution.
C. Developing and Deepening Understanding

Define the term "Percent by Mass"

➢ Percent by mass (% m/m) is
a measure of the
concentration of a solute in a
solution.

➢ It is expressed as the mass

of the solute divided by the
total mass of the solution,
multiplied by 100.
C. Developing and Deepening Understanding

Define the term "Percent by Mass"

➢ The percent by mass of a solute in a solution
represents the relative amount of the solute
present compared to the total mass of the
solution.

➢ It provides information about the composition

of the solution and the proportion of the
solute.

➢ Knowing the percent by mass is important for

understanding the concentration and
properties of a solution.
C. Developing and Deepening Understanding

Relationship between Solute Mass and Total

Solution Mass:
➢ The percent by mass (% m/m) of a solute in a solution is
determined by the relative amounts of the solute and the solvent.

➢ As the mass of the solute increases, the percent by mass of the

solute in the solution also increases.

➢ Conversely, as the total mass of the solution increases (due to the

addition of more solvent), the percent by mass of the solute
decreases.
C. Developing and Deepening Understanding

Percent by Mass Formula

Formula for Calculating Percent by Mass (%
m/m):

% m/m = (mass of solute / total mass of

solution) × 100

➢ Where:
➢ % m/m represents the percent by mass of the
solute in the solution
➢ Mass of solute is the amount of the solute present
➢ Total mass of solution is the combined mass of the
solute and the solvent
C. Developing and Deepening Understanding

2. Example Problems
Example 1:

You have a solution with 10 grams of sugar dissolved in 90 grams of

water.

Calculate the percent by mass (% m/m) of the sugar in the solution.

C. Developing and Deepening Understanding

2. Example Problems
Step-by-step solution:

Identify the mass of the solute (sugar) and the total mass of the solution.

o Mass of solute (sugar) = 10 grams

o Total mass of solution = 10 grams (sugar) + 90 grams (water) = 100
grams

Plug the values into the percent by mass formula:

= (mass of solute / total mass of solution) × 100 % m/m
= (10 g / 100 g) × 100 % m/m = 0.10 × 100
= 10%
C. Developing and Deepening Understanding

2. Example Problems
Example 2:

A solution contains 25 grams of sodium chloride (NaCl) dissolved in 175

grams of water.
Calculate the percent by mass (% m/m) of the sodium chloride in the
solution.
C. Developing and Deepening Understanding

2. Example Problems
Step-by-step solution:

Identify the mass of the solute (sodium chloride) and the total mass of the
solution.
o Mass of solute (NaCl) = 25 grams
o Total mass of solution = 25 grams (NaCl) + 175 grams (water) = 200
grams

Plug the values into the percent by mass formula:

= (mass of solute / total mass of solution) × 100
= (25 g / 200 g) × 100 %
= 0.125 × 100 %
= 12.5%
C. Developing and Deepening Understanding

3. Lesson Activity

Objective:
The learners will solve the problem on their own
using the steps learned from the discussion.
Problem Solving

Read each problem below and solve what is

being asked in each number.
C. Developing and Deepening Understanding

3. Lesson Activity

Problem No. 1
A certain player won third place in his game, and
he was given a bronze medal made from copper
and zinc. What is the mass percent of zinc in a
bronze medal made by adding 22.5 g of zinc to
427.5 g of copper?
C. Developing and Deepening Understanding

3. Lesson Activity
To calculate the mass percent of zinc in the bronze medal, we can use the formula:

Mass percent of zinc = (Mass of zinc / Total mass of solution) × 100

Step 1: Calculate the total mass of the bronze medal.

Total mass = Mass of zinc + Mass of copper
Total mass = 22.5 g + 427.5 g = 450 g

Step 2: Calculate the mass percent of zinc in the bronze medal.

Mass percent of zinc = (Mass of zinc / Total mass of solution) × 100
Mass percent of zinc = (22.5 g / 450 g) × 100
Mass percent of zinc = 0.05 × 100
Mass percent of zinc = 5%
C. Developing and Deepening Understanding

3. Lesson Activity

Problem No. 2
You are walking along the path of the school, and
suddenly found 1 peso coin. The coin is a nickel-
plated steel solid solution made by dissolving 1.5
g of nickel in 4.5 g of copper. Solve for the mass
percent of nickel.
C. Developing and Deepening Understanding

3. Lesson Activity
To calculate the mass percent of nickel in the solution, we can use the
formula:

Mass percent of nickel = (Mass of nickel / Total mass of solution) × 100

Step 1: Calculate the total mass of the nickel + Mass of copper Total mass =
1.5 g + 4.5 g = 6 g

Step 2: Calculate the mass percent of nickel in the solution.

Mass percent of nickel = (Mass of nickel / Total mass of solution) × 100
Mass percent of nickel = (1.5 g / 6 g) × 100
Mass percent of nickel = 0.25 × 100
Mass percent of nickel = 25%
C. Developing and Deepening Understanding

3. Lesson Activity

Problem No. 3
A gold medal given to an honor student was a
solid solution made by dissolving
11.0 g of gold in 554.0 g of silver. What is the
percent mass of gold in a gold medal?
C. Developing and Deepening Understanding

3. Lesson Activity
To calculate the percent mass of gold in the gold medal, we can use the
formula:

Percent mass of gold = (Mass of gold / Total mass of solution) × 100

Step 1: Calculate the total mass of the solution. Total mass = Mass of gold +
Mass of silver Total mass = 11.0 g + 554.0 g = 565.0 g

Step 2: Calculate the percent mass of gold in the gold medal.

Percent mass of gold = (Mass of gold / Total mass of solution) × 100
Percent mass of gold = (11.0 g / 565.0 g) × 100
Percent mass of gold = 0.0195 × 100
Percent mass of gold = 1.95%
