COMPUTERS

Evolution of Computers
4

Charles Babbage, an English inventor, built the first computer

in the 1830s. The most basic components of a computer are
the monitor, the central processing unit (CPU), the keyboard,
and the mouse. The computer also comes with a storage device
called the hard disk. It makes it possible for the computer
to remember things for a long time.

Central Processing Unit (noun) – The part of a computer that

controls all the other parts of the system

Device (noun) – A thing or piece of equipment that was made

to do a specific job

Computers today can help us perform various tasks. They let

us play games, allow us to talk to people, and so much more.
In the early days, a computer could only do simple maths, like
a calculator.

Modern computers can collect, store, edit, and analyse complex

information. Information may appear in the form of anything from
numbers and letters to photos and videos.
5

There are many kinds of computers out there. Supercomputers

are the fastest available computers. Scientists often use
supercomputers to solve hard problems that require a lot of
maths. On the other hand, a Mainframe is a very big, expensive
computer that can be used by hundreds or even thousands
of people at the same time.

Most people use personal computers (PCs) to work, study, watch

videos, and listen to music. Since computers are always getting
better, we will soon be able to use much more advanced ones to do
even more advanced tasks. Like the tiny computer-like systems built
inside machines like aeroplanes, factory robots, cars, and even home
appliances like a smart TV.
