Objective Type Questions( Page:145)

A. Fill in the blanks

1. Moon is the only natural satellite of the earth.

2. Mantle is the middle and thick layer of the earth.

3. Moon is the fifth largest natural satellite in the solar system.

4. During waxing phase, half moon gradually increases its size.

5. When the moon blocks the sun but leaves a ring of fire around, we call it an annular solar
eclipse.

B. Match the following

1. (1+c) Moon - Natural satellite

2. (2+d) Outermost layer of the earth - Crust

3. (3+f) Sun hidden by moon totally - Total solar eclipse

4. (4+a) Magma - consists of molten rock

5. (5+b) Moon hidden by earth totally - Total lunar eclipse

C. Name the following

1. When a planet comes in between the earth and the sun - Solar eclipse.

2. Natural satellite that revolves around the earth - Moon

3. Innermost layer of the earth - Inner core

4. An event when an astronomical object moves under the shadow of another object - Eclipse

5. The phrase when we do not see the moon - New moon

6. Fifth largest natural satellite in the solar system - Moon

7. A big ball of hot, burning gases - Sun

8. These satellites perform scientific missions - Artificial satellite

D. Answer the following questions.

1. Explain the layers of the earth.

Answer: The earth has 3 different layers. They are - crust, mantle and core.

I. Crust - The thin, outermost layer of the earth is called the crust. It makes up
only 1% of the earth's mass. This layer is made up of rock.
II. Mantle - Mantle is the middle and thick layer in which molten metals, minerals,
ores and other semi solid rocks are present.
III. Core - Below the mantle is the core. It makes up nearly one-third of the mass of
the earth.

2. What is an eclipse? How many types of eclipses are there? Write Eclipse’s
name.

Answer: An eclipse is an event when an astronomical object moves under the shadow of
another astronomical object.

There are 2 types of eclipses. They are - Solar eclipse and Lunar eclipse.

3. List the uses of artificial satellites. Answer: The uses of artificial satellites

are -

a) Communication satellites – Satellites help in phone calls, TV broadcasts, and the internet.

b) Weather satellites – They track clouds and storms to predict the weather.

c) Navigation satellites – Satellites help us find locations and give directions.

d) Observation satellites – They take pictures of Earth to study forests, oceans, and cities.

e) Military satellites - Military satellites or spy satellites can detect the launch of missiles etc.

4. Draw a diagram of the phases of the moon.
