DURING/LESSON PROPER

READING THE KEY Safety Precautions When Working in ICT

IDEA/STEM Environments: Fire Safety Guidelines

Working safely in ICT environments means

taking steps to prevent accidents and protect
yourself and others from harm. One of the
biggest dangers in ICT workplaces is fire, which
can start from faulty electrical equipment or
overloaded power outlets. To stay safe, it is
important to follow fire safety guidelines.

First, always keep a fire extinguisher nearby

and learn how to use it properly. Know the
evacuation plan of your workplace or school
so you can leave quickly and safely if there is a
fire. Smoke detectors should be installed and
checked regularly to warn you early if a fire
starts. Never block fire exits or hallways
because these are important escape routes.

Also, avoid overloading electrical outlets and

always turn off devices when they are not in
use. Report any damaged wires or faulty
equipment to your supervisor or teacher
immediately.

By following these fire safety precautions, you
help protect yourself and your classmates
while working in ICT environments.

The 3 Major Objectives of
Following Safety Guidelines
• Protect people from injury.
• Protect equipment from damage.
• Protect the environment from
contamination.

Safety Precautions when working in

the Computer Laboratory:
1. Always ground or discharge
yourself before touching any part of
the computer.
2. Do not work alone so that there is
someone who can take care of you in
case of accident or emergency.
3. Be careful with the tools that may
cause a short circuit.
4. Always pull the cable connector on
the handle and not hold on the cable
itself.
5. Use only rubber shoes when
standing on the ground or on a
concrete floor.
6. Make sure that the pins are
properly aligned when connecting a
cable connector.
7. Always power off and unplug the
computer before working on it.
8. Take away any liquid such as
mineral water or soft drinks near your
working area or near computers.

9. Contingency measures during
workplace accidents, fire, and other
emergencies are recognized.
10. Personal protective equipment is
correctly used in accordance with
organization procedures and
practice.
11. Hazard/risks in the workplace and
their corresponding indicators are
identified to minimize or eliminate
risk to co‐workers, workplace, and
environment.
12. Take necessary precautions to
protect the component of the
computer from damage caused by
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD).
13. Hold the components by the
edges and do not touch the ICs.
14. Read and follow instructions in
the manual carefully.
15. Do not use excessive force if
things do not quite slip into place.

Fire Safety Guidelines

• Know the location of fire
extinguishers, how to use them, and
which to use for electrical fires and
for combustible fires.
• Find an escape route in case a fire
gets out of control.
• Know how to contact emergency
services quickly.
• Keep the workspace clean.
• Keep most solvents in a separate
area.
AFTER AFTER/POST-LESSON

MAKING From what we learned about fire

GENERALIZATIONS safety in ICT environments, we can
AND say that safety is very important in
ABSTRACTIONS any workplace or learning space.
Taking simple steps such as keeping
fire extinguishers nearby, knowing
evacuation plans, and avoiding
overloaded electrical outlets helps
prevent accidents and fires.

Generalizing this idea, following

safety rules is not just for ICT
environments but for all places where

we study, work, or play. Being careful
with electricity and knowing how to
act during emergencies can save
lives.

In abstract terms, safety precautions

are actions that protect people and
property from harm. They show
responsibility and care for oneself
and others. If everyone practices
safety, accidents will be fewer, and
we can create a safe and healthy
environment for all.
