Buffer Capacity
EXPERIMENT 2

Objectives:
At the end of the experiment, students should be able to:
1. Determine the reactions of buffer solutions under different acidic and basic conditions.

Reagents/Materials:
Distilled water 0.1 M HCl pH meter
Acetate buffer 0.1 M NaOH 1mL pipet
1.0 M HCl std. buffer sol’n (pH 4 & pH 7) 10mL pipet

Procedures:
I. Preparation of Solutions
A. Solution A – Pure Water
- Put 10 mL of distilled water each in the two big test tubes or vials properly labeled
as solution A.

B. Solution B – 0.0001M HCl

1. Prepare 50 mL of 0.01M HCl by carefully adding 5 mL of 0.1M HCl to 45 mL of
distilled water. Stir.
2. Take 5 mL of 0.01 M HCl and add it to 45 mL of distilled water to make 0.001M
HCl.
3. Lastly, take 5 mL of 0.001 M HCl and add it to 45 mL of distilled water to make
0.0001M HCl.

C. Solution C – 0.0001M NaOH

1. Prepare 50 mL of 0.01M NaOH by carefully adding 5 mL of 0.1M NaOH to 45 mL
of distilled water. Stir.
2. Take 5 mL of 0.01 M NaOH and add it to 45 mL of distilled water to make
0.001M NaOH.
3. Lastly, take 5 mL of 0.001 M NaOH and add it to 45 mL of distilled water to make
0.0001M NaOH.

II. Effectivity of the Buffer Solutions

A. pH Determination of Unbuffered Solutions
1. Measure the pH of the prepared solutions A, B, C using the pH meter or pH paper.
Record the results in the provided Data Sheet.
2. Prepare 2 sets of test tubes for each solution and label them accordingly.
3. To the first set of the labeled test tubes or vials A, B, and C, add 0.1 mL of 1.0 M HCl
and stir. Determine the pH using the pH meter or pH paper. Record the results.
4. To the second set of the labeled test tubes or vials A, B, and C, add 0.1 mL of 1.0 M
NaOH and stir. Determine the pH using the pH meter or pH paper. Record the results
in the provided datasheet.

B. pH Determination of Buffered Solution

1. Put 10 mL each of the prepared 0.1M acetate buffer into the two properly labeled big
test tubes (or vials).
2. Determine the original pH of the acetate buffer solution using the pH meter or pH
paper. Record the results in the provided datasheet.
3. In one of the test tubes, add 0.1 ml of 1.0 M HCl solution and stir.
4. Determine the pH of the solution using the pH meter or pH paper. Record the results.
5. In the second test tube or vial, add 0.1 mL of 1.0M NaOH solution and stir.
6. Determine the pH of the solution using the pH meter or pH paper. Record the results
in the provided datasheet.
