UASB Handwritten Style Notes

The UASB reactor is an anaerobic biological wastewater treatment system that degrades pollutants to produce biogas without oxygen. The process involves influent entering the reactor, passing through a sludge blanket of microbial granules, and undergoing anaerobic digestion, resulting in treated effluent and collected biogas. While energy-efficient and compact, the UASB reactor has a long start-up period and is sensitive to temperature, making it suitable for diluted wastewater applications such as domestic sewage and industrial effluents.

UASB Reactor - Theory Notes

Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) Reactor Definition: The UASB reactor i
anaerobic biological wastewater treatment system where microorganisms degrade
in the absence of oxygen, producing biogas. Process Description: 1. Influent E
enters the bottom of the reactor. 2. Sludge Blanket: It passes through a dense
anaerobic microbial granules (sludge blanket). 3. Anaerobic Digestion: Microbes
pollutants into methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2). 4. Three-phase Separati
(biogas) rises and is collected. - Treated effluent flows out from the top.
settles back to maintain the blanket. Main Components: - Influent pipe (bottom
blanket - Gas-Liquid-Solid Separator (GLSS) - Effluent outlet - Biogas collecto
Energy-efficient (no aeration needed) - Produces biogas (renewable energy) - Lo
- Compact design Disadvantages: - Long start-up period - Sensitive to temperat
ideal for diluted wastewater Applications: - Treatment of: - Domestic sewage
warm climates) - Industrial effluents (dairy, distillery, food processing)
