QUESTION 2: ONE-WORD ITEMS

2.1 Protons.  (1)
2.2 Matter.  (1)
2.3 Atoms.  (1)
2.4 Compound.  (1)
2.5 Diffusion.  (1)

TOTAL SECTION A: [10]

SECTION B
QUESTION 3: PERIODIC TABLE OF ELEMENTS
3.1.1 Elements in the same group have the same number of valence electrons
, which determines how they react chemically . For example, all
elements in Group 1 have one valence electron and tend to lose that
electron easily, making them highly reactive.  (3)
3.1.2 Period 3.  (1)
[04]
QUESTION 4: ATOMS
4.1  Protons. 
 Neutrons. 
 Electrons.  (Any 2 of the three) (2)
4.2 The atomic number of an element is equal to the number of protons in
the nucleus of an atom . In a neutral atom, the number of protons is
equal to the number of electrons. 

4.3 If an atom gains electrons, it becomes a negatively charged ion (anion)
because it has more electrons than protons. 

Conversely, if an atom loses electrons, it becomes a positively charged

ion (cation) because it has more protons than electrons.  (2)
4.4 The atomic number of an element is the number of protons in the nucleus
of an atom , which defines the element, whereas the mass number is
the total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus. 

For example, carbon has an atomic number of 6 and a common mass

number of 12 (6 protons and 6 neutrons).  (3)
[09]

QUESTION 5: PARTICLE MODEL OF MATTER

5.1
5.1.1 Atoms are randomly arranged and the spaces between atoms are (2)
very large.

5.1.2 When temperature increases, the particles gain kinetic energy and
start moving very fast relative to each other until the attractive
force between them is overcome. (2)

5.2
5.2.1 As ice is heated, the strong forces holding the particles together (2)
are weakened, and the ice particles start moving out of their
regular
arrangement.

5.2.2 Particles in liquids are so close together that they cannot be

squashed together any further. (2)

5.2.3 The forces holding gas particles together are so weak that they
are easily overcomeso the particles can move very far apart
from each other. (2)
5.3
5.3.1 Density is a measure of how much mass of material fits into a
given volume OR Mass per unit volume  (2)
5.3.2 Ice, water, solid  (3)

 (2)
5.5
5.5.1 When the air is pumped into the tin, pressure increases because
of the volume of the gas in the tin increase.  (2)
5.6
5.6.1 The density of the metal is greater than the density of the plastic.
