Biblical meaning of Discipling
 Jesus Christ gave a very good examples of Discipling
 Jesus went all over Galilee, teaching in the Jewish meeting place (Mathew
4:23)
 Jesus preached the good news about God’s Kingdom (Mathew 4:23)
 Jesus also healed every kind of disease and sickness (Mathew 4:23)
 Jesus answered……You give them something to eat (Luke 9:13)

 Luke 6:13 The next morning He called his disciples together and chose twelve
of them to be his apostles

Definition of Discipline
 Discipline is the task of helping children learn to behave
in acceptable ways
 The terms discipline does not mean punishment it means
guidance or direction
 Punishment is only a small part of guidance
 With excellent guidance children gradually begin to
understand why certain actions are right or wrong
developing a conscience
 The ultimate goal of discipline is to help children achieve
self discipline --- the ability of Self Control, Self-
Discipline, Self-Guide
Discipline – An Act of Discipling
 Education Chapter 34 on Discipline

 The object of discipline is to train a child; shaping and molding a child’s


attitude and behaviour; it means TEACHING, TRAINING AND GUIDING
 Effective discipline helps children learn to control their behaviour so that
they act according to their ideas of what are right and wrong – NOT because
they fear punishment (they are honest because it is wrong to be dishonest
NOT because they are afraid of getting caught)

Discipline can be a reaction to both good and bad behaviour

Why do children need to be Disciplined??
Effective Techniques in Discipling a Child
 Set limits with rules
 Rules are necessary to protect a child from gander and set examples of acceptable
behaviour
 Everyone is more confident and comfortable knowing how to act in a new situation
 Using the logical consequence technique – logically connecting to unacceptable
behaviour
 A child not finishing dinner no permission to play with toys
 A child who skips a chore has to do extra chore do not take away TV

 Communication
 Tell the child what he/she must do rather
 Explanation should be simple, clear and brief
 Be prepared to repeat yourself
 Positive Reinforcement
 Praise the child – children tend to repeat the actions they are praised for

 Be Consistent, Fair and Firm


 Discipline the same way every time that behaviour occurs
 Stick to your rules
 Discipline with fairness among all children/ consider the age of the child and
ability

 Rewards
 Reward good behaviour – do not only notice the negative behaviour
 Be immediate and direct with discipline and rewards – hugs are free
 Be Preventive
 Guide the child using verbal, model or other prompts
 State the rules before they are broken

 Avoid inconsistencies
 Different limits set on different days by the same person
 Different adults set different limits
 No limits are set
 Limits are able to be changed

 Do not yell to the child – talk to the child and explain why he/she should or
should not do certain things
