Vet to share stories; inspire members

Dr. Robert Sharp is a lifelong Ohio resident. Born in Niles, he received his B.A. in Zoology and M.A. in Aquatic Ecology from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He
then served in the U.S. Air Force for five years as a KC-135 instructor/evaluator navigator with the 17th Bomb Wing of Strategic Air Command and is a Vietnam veteran. He left the Air Force to attend The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, received his D.V.M. degree in 1979 and has practiced in southern Ohio
since graduation.

He married his hometown sweetheart and Miami alumna, Susie Reid. Dr. Sharp and his wife Susie grew up on Lincoln Avenue in Niles. Susie's mom was his music teacher and his dad was her high school principal. The Sharps have been married for 4l years and live in a restored Victorian home in Hillsboro with a variety of animals. They have two children, Amy and Reid. Amy, a Miami University graduate, works daily at the practice. She and her husband Matt have two sons, Charlie and Robbie. Reid, also a Miami University graduate, is completing his last semester of vet school clinic rotations at The Ohio State University and will join Dr. Sharp in his practice after graduation in June.

Dr. Sharp's hobbies include: trapshooting, hshing, camping' flying radiocontrolled model airplanes, and motorcycling. He has been riding motorcycles for over forly years and rides about ten thousand miles annually. Rob is a Presbyterian Elder, a Rotarian and Paul Harris Fellow, a member of the' American Veterinary Medical Association, the Ohio Veterinary Medical Association, the Amateur Trapshooting Association and the BMW Motorcycle Owners of America. His book, No Dogs in Heaven?, published by Running Press (an imprint of Perseus Books), is currently in its 5th printing and is available in North America and Europe in both hardbound and trade paperback. His monthly column "Ask a Country Vet" in Counttl, Living magazine is read by millions. Alpha Delta State members will be inspired by Dr. Sharp's story of writing about his experiences as a country vet who must sometimes be a psychologist, a businessman! a hand-holder, a mind-reader, a benefactor and even a CSI detective. Members will quickly realize Dr. Sharp has all the qualities of a great country vet - a love for animals and a love of the outdoors. He is also a people person - very imporlant because the animals usually come tugging a human on the other end of the leash.

Hats off to Chapters!

Completing reports is not high on most people's lists of things to do. I must tip my hat to our chapter personnel for completing and retuming the 2012 Biennial Reports by the February 1 deadline. I must also tip my hat to the Alpha Delta State chairmen and officers for compiling and sending the state reports to Intemational Headquarters by the March I dead-

Chapters 'fatten' World Fellowship fund

Remember all those pennies, loose change and holiday stockings you filled in the past two years to benef,rt the World Fellowship Fund? They really do add upl In addition to contributions from chapter treasuries and fundraisers such as raffles and auctions, the grand total sent to the World Fellowship Fund during 2010-2012 was $8,253.05. This was from 60 of the 92 chapters reporting to World Fellowship Chair, Becky Leighty. There were a few chapters that indicated they had contributed some money during this biennium, but they did not have firm figures to report. Therefore, this amount is a little lower than the actual amount contributed. Thanks so much for your generosity, members of Alpha Delta State! This money is used to fund scholarships (also known as endowments or fellowships) for graduate students in foreign countries desiring to do graduate work in either the USA or Canada. Deserving students are chosen by the Institute of International Education (IIE) in cooperation with the Fulbright Fellowship organization. Hence, the word "fellowship" in World Fellowship really stands for scholarship or endowment. Contributions for our chapters ranged from $10 to $970. That is not a typo! A chapter with only 38 members contributed $970 from individual donations over the two-year period. Congratulations, Gamma Zeta! A total of 22 chapters contributed

line. World Fellowship, Membership,

Necrology, Finance, Educational Excellence, Communication/Publicity, Scholar-

Membership ideas are shared

Is your chapter looking for new members? Many chapters have found ways to attract new members other than inviting fellow teachers. One chapter has a "Bring a Friend" to a meeting. This has been very successful for them. Another chapter conducts an education workshop for members and nonmembers with PDUs available. They have Delta Kappa Gamma Membership Brochures available. Do any of your members volunteer outside of a school setting? Perhaps there are other retired teachers volunteering there also. Remember, the 2010 International Convention voted to eliminate the two-year restriction for retired teachers to join Delta Kappa Gamma. For more ideas on attracting new members, come to lhe One is Silver membership workshop at state convention. One key to retaining members is to show them that they are appreciated. Chapters do this in various ways. One chapter gives a rose to a spotlighted member every month. Another gives a rose to recent retirees. One chapter gives a cup and saucer to mernbers for long time service. Bragging about a member at a meeting and in the nern, sletter always makes a member feel special. For more ideas on retaining members, come to the The Other Gold membership workshop at state convention' A big thank you to all chapters for taking the time to complete the Chapter Biennial Membership Report. Your ideas are wonderful and will be shared at state convention and this summer during the Leadership Workshops. Thank you for all you do to keep Delta Kappa Gamma growing.

Chapter,

Since the earthquake, Haitians around Port au Prince are encouraged to migrate north so LaCroix Mission population is expanding beyond its means. As large families with children move into the LaCroix area, there is a frantic search for shelter. Families are divided among several homes. Class sizes in the mission school average 38-40 students per class.
Supplies and educational materials are limited or nonexistent, but LaCroix teachers maintain disciplined classrooms and

Chapter photos wanted for Anniversary celebration

It is not too early to schedule the photo session for Project 201 3. The goal of our project is to collect a group photograph of every Alpha Delta State chapter during the 20ll-2013 biennium. The photographs will become parl of a display at the 2013 State Convention, our 75th Anniversary celebration. So far, five chapters, including Pi, A1pha Tau, Gamma Sigma, Delta Tau and Delta Upsilon, have submitted photographs. Chapters are reminded the photo may be black and white or color and may be up to 8xl0 in size. It is not necessary to employ a professional photographer, but using a tripod is very helpful. Plan your photo session for a meeting with high attendance. Consider using a blank wall or a clear sky as background. Arrange members on steps so everyone can be seen. Do not make the group look into the sun. Print the chapter name on the back of the photograph in pencil. A separate sheet with first and last names of members, in order of arrangement, should be included.

While February 1,2073, is the Project 2013 deadline, photographs may be sent any time to Beth Archer, 1140 Ellen Drive, Zanesville, OH 43701 or you may present them in person. Photos should not be e-mailed.
