BUILDING SERVICES
INTRODUCTION

Building services are the systems

installed in buildings to make them
comfortable, functional, efficient and
safe.

Building Services involves the followings:

 Water Supply
 Drainage and Sanitation
 Electrical Installation
 Mechanical installation
 HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air- Condition)
Purpose of Building Services
A building must do what it was
designed to do-not just provide
shelter but also be an
environment where people can
live, work and achieve.
Imagine yourself in a most
fabulous building in the world.
Now take away the lighting,
heating and ventilation, the lift
and escalators, acoustics,
plumbing, power supply and
energy management system.
Now you are left with cold or
hot, dark inhabitable shell.
Basically “BUILDING
SERVICES” is what that
makes a building come to life
what makes the building work.
Proper utilization of services includes-
 proper understanding of building design and the interaction
between components.
 Rich prediction tools.
 Adequate detailing.
 Similarity between specifications and actual construction.
 Rich build quality.
 The use of idealized performance data for products.
 Proper user behavior or operation.

Building should be designed such way that it provides better

lighting, comfortable space, temperature and air quality,
convenient power and communication capability, high quality
sanitation and reliable systems for the protection of life and
property.
Utilization of building services in design work-
Building services play a central role in contributing to the design of a building, not only in terms
of overall strategies and standards to be achieved, but also in façade engineering, the weights,
sizes and location of major plant and equipment, the position of vertical service risers, routes
for the distribution of horizontal services, drainage, energy sources, sustainability, and so on.
This means that building services design must be integrated into the overall building design
from a very early stage, particularly on complex building projects such as hospitals. Whilst it is
usual for a building design team to be led by an architect, on buildings with very complex
building services requirements a building services engineer might be appointed as the lead
designer.
