Hanson Dissolution System Drivers Operation Manual 81-200-807-D
1 Safety Considerations
No safety considerations are applicable to the Hanson Dissolution System Drivers.
Refer to the appropriate operation manuals or other reference materials for the Safety
Considerations for each of the individual instruments operating in the system.
2 Introduction
2.1 Overview
Hanson Dissolution System Drivers were designed by Hanson Research in conjunction with
Agilent Technologies specifically to provide a communication tool between the Agilent
ChemStation™ program and select Hanson Research instruments. The drivers provide the
mechanism by which the ChemStation can control and retrieve status information from
Hanson dissolution instruments such as the SR8-Plus™ and AutoPlus™, and the Vision G2
Elite™ Dissolution Test Station and Vision G2 AutoPlus™ automated samplers. This manual
refers to the SR8-Plus™ and AutoPlus™ as the Legacy instruments and to the Vision G2
Elite™ Dissolution Test Station and Vision G2 AutoPlus™ as the Vision instruments.
The Hanson drivers act as a communication tool between the Agilent ChemStation and the
Hanson Research instruments. Because the Hanson drivers do not alter the functionality of
the ChemStation program, this operation manual does not address the ChemStation program
itself, but rather the operation of the Hanson drivers in the ChemStation environment. For
information on the ChemStation program, refer to the materials provided with the
ChemStation software or contact your Agilent representative.
The Hanson Dissolution System Drivers version 5.00 (p/n 81-200-026) are supplied by
Hanson Research via CD ROM. These have been validated by Hanson Research with
ChemStation Version B.04.02. Hanson Research has not validated version 5.00 drivers with
ChemStation Versions lower than B.04.02.
1
DDE stands for Dynamic Data Exchange. DDE is the way that applications running within the Microsoft® Windows® environment
communicate with each other.

When running dissolution tests utilizing the Hanson AutoPlus and the Agilent MultiCell
Transport for the 8453, it is necessary to identify the intended contents of each UV cell in the
MultiCell Transport (i.e. Blank, Sample, Control, or Not Used).
1. Choose Define Measurement Cycle from the Method menu to open the Measure Cycle
Definition window.
The Total Steps per Measure Cycle is always 8 when using the 8-position MultiCell
Transport, regardless of how many cells will actually be used.
2. Using the drop down menu for each cell position (Meas. No), set the Measure As to
Blank, Sample, Control, or Not Used, as appropriate for the test method.
Note: Agilent and Hanson Research recommend that the first cell (Meas. No 1)
always be set to Blank. Hanson Research recommends that the AutoPlus tubing
from the AutoPlus syringe position number 7 (clear) be directed to this cell and
that the sample probe be directed to a container of blank media.
3. Enter the appropriate drawn Volume and added Volume as required by your method to
automatically calculate the volume change corrections.
1. If a control is being used, choose Define Control for Measurement Cycle from the
Method menu to open the Control for Measurement Cycle Definition window.
2. Enter the Analyte Name, Concentration, Unit, and Dev. Limit % as appropriate for the
test method.
1. With the On-line Hanson AutoPlus selected as the sampling system, click the Setup
button in the Sampling window, or . . .
. . . choose Setup Sampling System from the Instrument menu to open the Setup
Multicell Transport window.
2. Enter the Cell Path Length for each cell as appropriate for the test method.
3. Click the Parameter button to open the Hanson AutoPlus Test Parameters window.
When Rinse flowcells with is selected, ChemStation will instruct the AutoPlus to pump
the specified volume from the source dissolution bath through the flow cells at each
sampling time point. The Wait before reading flowcells for time automatically defaults
to 10 seconds of wait per 1 mL of volume pumped. This is the recommended setting.
5. Click the Print button (if desired) in the Hanson AutoPlus Test Parameters window to
print the AutoPlus test parameters that will be used with the ChemStation.
1. Power on the 8453, the SR8-Plus or Vision Dissolution Test Station(s), the AutoPlus,
and the MultiFill collector, if used.
When using the MultiCell Transport, it is appropriate to match the cells by using the Zero
Cells option. Agilent recommends that the cells be filled with purified water to zero the cells.
During the zeroing process, the cell in Position 1 will be set to zero at all wavelengths. Each
subsequent cell is evaluated against the first cell, and values are obtained and stored in the
zero cells registry to correct for the cell variations at each wavelength.
The cells should be zeroed whenever the cells are moved from their positions in the MultiCell
Transport or if the cells are changed. If, when attempting to run a ChemStation method, a
message appears indicating that there are no zero cell values, it is recommended that the
cells be zeroed before continuing with the test.
1. In Dissolution Testing mode (single bath mode), fill the cells with water by using the
Prime function described in Section 5 (Operation and Programming) or by using the
AutoPlus syringe controls.
4. In Multibath Dissolution Testing mode, fill the cells with water by using the Prime
function described in Section 5 (Operation and Programming) or by using the AutoPlus
syringe controls.
The MultiCell Transport will move to the reference position and the measurement will be
made.
The MultiCell Transport will move to the reference position and the measurement will be
made.
Note: To create a new method, follow the steps in Section 5 (Operation and
Programming) in this manual and the appropriate ChemStation reference information.
3. To load an existing method, choose Load Method from the File menu. An existing
ChemStation method will contain the dissolution setup, the definitions of the
measurement cycle and control, and the sampling system setup.
The existing method will be loaded and the method name will be displayed in the Method
field.
2. To run new standards prior to beginning the dissolution test, fill the appropriate cell with
standard by using the Transfer function described in Section 5 (Operation and
Programming), by using the AutoPlus syringe controls, or by allowing the AutoPlus to
pump (Auto Rinse/Wait on) with the appropriate volume programmed in the AutoPlus
Transfer feature within ChemStation (see Section 5 [Operation and Programming]).
4. With the appropriate ChemStation method(s), standards, and other necessary items
loaded for each bath, initiate the dissolution test by clicking the Run Dissolution button.
The test will run according to the parameters programmed in the ChemStation method.
5. At the conclusion of each test, clean up each instrument according to its individual clean
up instructions.

Appendix A
Dissolution Run Parameters
This Appendix identifies the parameters that can be selected when editing the Dissolution
Run Parameters, and describes how they work within the environment created when the
Hanson Dissolution System Drivers are installed with the ChemStation program. In some
cases, more specific information may be obtained from the ChemStation reference
information than is listed in this Appendix.
PreRun Seq.
The PreRun Seq. tab of the Dissolution Run Method Parameters dialog box contains a table
that allows you to set up a sequence of actions that are performed prior to the start of the
dissolution test. The table contains three columns:
# Column
The # column shows the line number of the sequence of actions. The actions are performed
sequentially from the lowest line number to the highest.
Action
The Action column defines the actions in the sequence.
Parameters
The Parameters field shows the values of the parameters set in the appropriate Setup dialog
box. If no parameters have been specified, the Parameters field displays the message
>>> not set <<<. The requirements for the Parameters field are determined by the action
specified.
The possible actions are defined in a drop-down list, which is displayed by activating the
Action field and selecting the down arrow. These actions are:
Remote Operation: Does not operate with the Hanson Dissolution System Drivers
installed.
Wash Cycle: Does not operate with the Hanson Dissolution System Drivers installed.
Flow Rate Test: Does not operate with the Hanson Dissolution Drivers installed.
Medium Test: Checks the purity of the solvent in all vessels by measuring the
absorbance on all channels/vessels. The maximum absorbance and the wavelength
range can be defined by the user. Operating with the Hanson Dissolution System Drivers
installed, this test requires that the cells be pre-filled by using a UserMacro action (such
as hrTransfer) to fill the cells with media from the vessels. This action should be
prioritized to run before the Medium Test action.
Measure Blank: Measures a blank spectrum. A good blank measurement shows a flat
baseline with A<10-3 AU. Operating with the Hanson Dissolution System Drivers
installed, this action requires that the cell be pre-filled by using a UserMacro action (such
as hrTransfer) to fill the Cell Position 1 with blank media from an appropriate source
before the measurement. This action should be prioritized to run before the Measure
Blank action. Operating with the Hanson Dissolution System Drivers installed, the
Channel is always set to 1. The cell position measured is always Position 1.
ReMeasure Standard: Prompts the operator to remeasure the standard used to calculate
the dissolution results. The ChemStation options are: 1) Replace existing Standard: The
“old“ standards will be replaced by the remeasured standards; 2) Average with existing
Standards: The remeasured standards are appended to the existing standard; hence,
they will be averaged.
Operating with the Hanson Dissolution System Drivers installed, this action requires that
the cell be pre-filled by using a UserMacro action (such as hrTransfer) to fill the Cell
Position 1 with the standard solution from an appropriate source before the
measurement. This action should be prioritized to run before the ReMeasure Standard
action. Operating with the Hanson Dissolution System Drivers installed, the Channel is
always set to 1. The cell position measured is always Position 1.
ReMeasure Auxiliary: Remeasures the Auxiliary spectrum used for auxiliary correction.
Operating with the Hanson Dissolution System Drivers installed, this action requires that
the cell be pre-filled by using a UserMacro action (such as hrTransfer) to fill the Cell
Position 1 with the capsule background solution from an appropriate source before the
measurement. This action should be prioritized to run before the ReMeasure Auxiliary
action. Operating with the Hanson Dissolution System Drivers installed, the Channel is
always set to 1. The cell position measured is always Position 1.
Bath Parameters: Immediately changes the bath speed and temperature to those
specified in the parameters.
Lower/Lift Probes: Moves the probes if automated probes are installed. Lower Probes
and Lift Probes actions must be separated by another action for the actions to be
effective.
Goto Position: Does not operate with the Hanson Dissolution System Drivers installed.
Pump: Does not operate with the Hanson Dissolution System Drivers installed.
User Macro: Executes a user-defined macro. The AutoPlus Driver contains the following
macros which can be called from the User Macro function in the PreRun Sequence:
o hrPrime: Runs the prime function with the parameters selected in the AutoPlus icon.
o hrWash: Runs the wash function with the parameters selected in the AutoPlus icon.
o hrRun (Protocol Number): Runs an AutoPlus protocol, e.g., to run AutoPlus Protocol
3, enter hrRun 3 in the Parameters field.
Wait: User-defined wait time. Can be used for time-limited actions indicated by an
Operator Message.
Note: Clicking the Check button will perform a consistency check of all actions
that have been setup in the PreRun Sequence, Dissolution Run, and PostRun
Sequence. If any inconsistencies are detected, the Consistency Check Results
window pops up, and shows all Errors (E) and Warnings (W).
Dissolution Run
The Dissolution Run tab of the Dissolution Run Method Parameters dialog box contains a
timetable that allows you to set up a sequence of actions that are performed at specified
times during the dissolution test. The timetable contains three columns:
Min
The Min column shows the time (in minutes from the start of the run) at which the specified
action is set to be performed.
Action
The Action column defines the actions in the sequence.
Parameters
The Parameters field shows the values of the parameters set in the appropriate Setup dialog
box. If no parameters have been specified, the Parameters field displays the message
>>> not set <<<. The requirements for the Parameters field are determined by the action
specified.
The possible actions are defined in a drop-down list, which is displayed by activating the
Action field and choosing the down arrow. These actions are:
Remote Operation: Does not operate with the Hanson Dissolution System Drivers
installed.
Pause: Stops the Dissolution Run for a user-defined time (e.g., to change or replace a
certain amount of liquid for a pH change).
Zero Vessels: Measure cycle at time t=0 as defined under MethodDefine Measurement
Cycle. The absorbance A0i of Vessel i (i=1…8) at time t=0 is subtracted from all following
measurements on Vessel i (including t=0): A t i => A t i - A0i . Hence, all profiles start at the
zero point: t=0 is equivalent to %Diss=0. With the Hanson Dissolution System Drivers
installed, the AutoPlus will pump, but the E-Probes (or Auto-Probes) will not lower.
Zero Vessels without pump: Same as Zero Vessels, but without a pump cycle. This
action can be used when using basket methods where the baskets are moved into the
vessels at time zero.
Measure Infinity Value: Does not operate with the Hanson Dissolution System Drivers
installed.
Bath Parameter: Changes the bath parameters (e.g., to turn off the heater and stirrers at
the end of the Dissolution Run).
Lower/Lift Probes: Moves the probes if automated probes are installed. It is not
necessary to use the Lower/Lift Probes actions when the Hanson Dissolution System
Drivers are installed to actuate E-Probes or Auto-Probes for the Measure Vessels action.
Sampler Position: Does not operate with the Hanson Dissolution System Drivers
installed.
Change Sampler Tray: Does not operate with the Hanson Dissolution System Drivers
installed.
PostRun Seq.
The PostRun Seq. tab of the Dissolution Run Method Parameters dialog box contains a table
that allows you to set up a sequence of actions that are performed after the conclusion of the
dissolution test.
The requirements for the Parameters field are determined by the action
specified.

allows the user to select the report style and the destination (printer, screen, or file).
Wash Cycle: Does not operate with the Hanson Dissolution System Drivers installed.
Flow Rate Test: Does not operate with the Hanson Dissolution System Drivers installed.
Measure Blank: Measures a blank spectrum. A good blank measurement shows a flat
baseline with A<10-3 AU. Operating with the Hanson Dissolution System Drivers installed,
this action requires that the cell be pre-filled by using a UserMacro action (such as
hrTransfer) to fill the Cell Position 1 with blank media from an appropriate source before
the measurement. This action should be prioritized to run before the Measure Blank
action. Operating with the Hanson Dissolution System Drivers installed, the Channel is
always set to 1. The cell position measured is always Position 1.
Operating with the Hanson Dissolution System Drivers installed, this action requires that
the cell be pre-filled by using a UserMacro action such as hrTransfer to fill the Cell
Position 1 with the standard solution from an appropriate source before the
measurement. This action should be prioritized to run before the ReMeasure Standard
action. Operating with the Hanson Dissolution System Drivers installed, the Channel is
always set to 1. The cell position measured is always Position 1.
Save Dissolution Result: Saves the Result file (*.dr) on the hard disk. This should
always be the first action in the PostRun Sequence!
Switch Off Lamps: Switches off the UV (deuterium) lamp and/or Visible (tungsten) lamp.
Goto Position: Does not operate with the Hanson Dissolution System Drivers installed.
Pump: Does not operate with the Hanson Dissolution System Drivers installed.
