engineering student, and I am genuinely grateful to everyone
who contributed to its success.
Introduction

A site visit plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between

theoretical knowledge and real-world application in civil
engineering. As part of our academic learning, we undertook an
internship at an ongoing road construction project at Kalikavu,
Malappuram, executed by ULCCS Ltd. The internship was
conducted over a period of 14 days, from 19th May 2025 to 4th
June 2025.
Throughout the internship, we were introduced to several key
aspects of road infrastructure development. The exposure
included practical insights into the construction of drainage
systems, culverts, retaining walls, and road layers—each
forming an essential component of modern transportation
networks. Observing these operations on-site allowed us to
understand how design specifications are translated into
execution, and the challenges faced in ensuring quality and
safety standards.
This experience not only reinforced classroom concepts but also
offered a clearer perspective on the planning, coordination, and
technical skills required in civil engineering projects.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF
ACTIVITIES

Day 1 – 19/05/2025 (Pullengode)

We visited the site at Pullengode where the existing road was
being dismantled to reduce the gradient. The dismantling was
done up to the subgrade layer. With the support of Surveyor Mr.
Arjun, cross-sectional levels and depths were taken to ensure
proper slope correction. Following this, the Granular Sub Base
(GSB) layer was laid and compacted, forming the foundation for
the upcoming pavement layers.

Day 3 – 21/05/2025 (Kalikavu Bus Stand)

At Kalikavu Bus Stand, we observed the ongoing construction of
a culvert. Under the guidance of Mr. Adhin, Assistant Project
Engineer, we took measurements of the drainage channel and

calculated the volume of concrete used for the culvert work. We

also observed the construction of a nearby cement concrete
(CC) retaining wall, gaining insights into its structural detailing
and execution.

Day 4 – 22/05/2025 (Srambikkal)

At Srambikkal, we observed the construction of a deep
drainage system with a depth greater than 1.45 meters. The
reinforcement used was ring-shaped, unlike the typical U-
shaped reinforcement in standard drainage. M20 grade
concrete was used for the bracing beam support of the
drainage. We also saw the compaction of the Wet Mix Macadam
(WMM) layer. Additionally, we carried out level calculations
using a data sheet to determine the reduced levels on site.
Day 5 – 23/05/2025 (Chokkad)
At Chokkad, we observed the construction of a drainage system
over 1.45 meters deep, located beside a culvert. The increased
depth was necessary to manage the high water flow from the
culvert. We witnessed the pouring of M20 grade concrete at the
site. Mr. Akhil, Safety Engineer, also interacted with us and
clarified various safety requirements and protocols followed
during construction activities

Day 6 – 26/05/2025 (Kallamoola)

At Kallamoola, we took level measurements for the Granular
Sub Base (GSB) and Wet Mix Macadam (WMM) layers. We also
observed the construction of a standard drainage system at the
site. Later, we accompanied Project Engineer Mr. Bestin N J to
assist in collecting data on trees cut during the land acquisition
process.

Day 8 – 28/05/2025 (Pannikkottumunda Office – Lab

Visit)
On Day 8, we visited the quality control lab at the
Pannikkottumunda office site. Under the guidance of QC

Engineer Ms. Meenu Kunjumon, we were introduced to various

testing equipments such as the Compression Testing Machine
(CTM), Aggregate Impact Value (AIV), Sand Pouring Cylinder,
Bitumen Extractor etc. She also explained the calibration
procedures for different machines. Additionally, we learned how
to set up and use the auto level instrument.

Day 10 – 30/05/2025 (Pookkottumpaadam)

At Pookkottumpaadam, we observed the construction of a
retaining wall along one side of the road beside the drainage.
The deshuttering process was in progress during our visit. We
also took measurements for a standard drainage near Galaxy
Cinema Theatre. Additionally, road dismantling work was
underway to prepare for the application of GSB and WMM
layers.

During the remaining days of the internship, we engaged in

various learning experiences that complemented our field
observations. We spent time studying site plans and technical
drawings, which helped us understand how designs are
implemented on the ground. We also reviewed the estimate
book to gain insight into cost calculations and material
requirements. Interactions with labour workers gave us a
practical perspective on execution challenges and worksite
coordination. Additionally, we observed the operation of heavy
machinery and developed a basic understanding of how
different equipment functions in road construction. We were
introduced to the software PRICE, widely used for preparing
bills and estimates in public sector projects. Furthermore, we
took part in the measurement of various structural
components, enhancing our accuracy and familiarity with on-
site data collection.

CONCLUSION

The internship at the road construction project in Kalikavu,

carried out by ULCCS Ltd., was a valuable and enriching
experience that bridged the gap between academic learning
and practical application. Over the course of 14 days, we were
exposed to a wide range of construction activities, including
drainage works, culverts, retaining walls, and road layer
preparations. Through direct observation and hands-on
involvement, we gained a deeper understanding of construction
methods, site management, and the importance of precision in
every stage of execution.
In addition to technical learning, the internship offered us
opportunities to interact with engineers, site supervisors, and
labourers, providing insights into the coordination and
communication essential for a successful project. Exposure to
tools like the PRICE software and practical instruments such as
auto levels further enhanced our technical competence.
Overall, the internship significantly broadened our
understanding of civil engineering practices and reinforced our
motivation to pursue the field with greater confidence and
clarity.
