GENERAL:

This Technical Publication describes how to minimize color density shift due to five different factors.

DETAILS:

The following five factors that can influence color density shift have been identified as:
1.- The Patch Reading Sensor is soiled with toner and/or paper dust.
2.- Autogradation Adjustment is not performed as frequently as necessary.
3.- Autogradation Adjustment is not performed correctly using the recommended media.
4.- The Primary Discharge Current in coated paper mode (1/3 speed) may be set incorrectly.
5.- The Drum Heaters are not set to “ON.”

NOTE
Before implementing the below procedures, ensure the latest System Software V. 55.12.01 is installed.
This will ensure the machine is taking advantage of the latest improvements and adjustments.

Factory work:

Dcon v. 51.01 (System v. 52.01) and later decreases the Primary Discharge Current in 1/3 speed mode.

Service work:

When the above symptom occurs, ensure the machine is running the latest System Software available.
This will ensure the machine is taking advantage of the latest adjustments and improvements.

Perform the following work:

1.- Clean the Patch Reading Sensor using a blower brush.

Follow the detailed procedure indicated in pages 4-214 to 4-217 of the ESM. Make this part of the
service visit to ensure correct readings of the color patches placed in the ITB.

NOTE
Do not use alcohol because the sensor window becomes clouded (due to a chemical reaction).
Do not use a dry cloth to clean it because the sensor window is charged and will attract toner.

2.- Increasing the frequency of Autogradation Adjustment.

a. Execute Full Autogradation Adjustment (PASCAL) regularly.

The recommended frequency of Autogradation Adjustment to minimize this symptom is to be performed
as needed, but at least once a day, depending on the volume of jobs being run that day.
The copier feeds paper properly using the 3 different speeds according to the base weight of the media.

Paper Modes:
- Plain paper mode: constant speed
- Heavy paper mode: 1/2 speed
- Coated paper mode: 1/3 speed

b. Increasing the frequency of ARCDAT control.

Decrease the value of ARC-INT1 (ARCDAT interruption timing) to increase ARCDAT control.

Service Mode (Lev 2):

COPIER > OPTION > IMG-SPD > ARC-INT1

Adjustment range: Every 0 to 1,000 images. (default: every 100 images).

Change this setting from 100 to a value lower than 100.
A setting of 20 may be required to have effective results.
NOTE : This increment of ARCDAT control will affect productivity.

3.- Autogradation Adjustment is not performed correctly using the recommended media.

In order to achieve optimal quality, there are steps that every end user should follow on a regular
basis. These steps include:
• Shading Correction
• Auto Adjust Gradation
• imagePASS / ColorPASS calibration
If these steps are not followed, print quality and consistency cannot be guaranteed. It is up to the end
user to execute these steps whenever they deem print / copy quality has degraded. Performing these
steps either daily or prior to a large print / copy job is advisable. It is strongly suggested that at the end
of every service call, the technician also executes these steps to ensure customer satisfaction.
Please refer to Technical Publications TP10 356.pdf and TP10 323.pdf for additional details.

NOTE
The Autogradation Adjustment must be performed on each of the 3 different paper modes.
The Autogradation Adjustment must be performed on the paper mode that the user
actually uses with the recommended media for that paper mode.
See TP10 323.PDF and TP10 356.PDF for details.

4.- The Primary Discharge Current in coated paper mode (1/3 speed) may be set incorrectly.

Decreasing the Primary Discharge Current in the Coated Paper Mode (1/3 speed).
In order to prevent smeared image, upgrade software to Dcon v51.01 (System v52.01 and later).
Dcon v51.01 (System v52.01 and later) decrease and optimize the Primary Discharge Current.

NOTE
Before upgrading the firmware, change the following Service Mode items to '0 (default).'

Service Mode (Lev.2)

COPIER >ADJUST > HV-PRI > -DIS-TGY => 0
COPIER >ADJUST > HV-PRI > -DIS-TGM => 0
COPIER >ADJUST > HV-PRI > -DIS-TGC => 0

5.- The Environment Heater Switch [1] at the bottom of the copier must be always ON.
[1]

[1] Environment Heater Switch

a. Keep the Environment Heater Switch ON.

Change the setting value of the Service Mode "DHT-ON" to '1.'

Service Mode (Lev. 2)

COPIER > ADJUST > HV-PRI > DHT-ON
Setting values:
0: default
1: turn ON forcedly

b. Ensure that the Drum Heater Assembly [1] is installed.

Not all the machines in the field have the Drum Heater Assembly installed.
The Drum Heater Assembly is now standard equipment. Please follow the instructions in
TP10 171.pdf for proper installation of the Drum Heater Assembly. If the temperature of the Drum is
higher than the room temperature by approx. 6 degrees Celsius or more, the absolute moisture amount
decreases and uneven image density is minimized.
