UNIVERSAL FORMAT – Advantages &
Essay (IELTS Writing Task 2)
🔹 WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
TOPIC = the subject of the essay (what the question is about)

A and B = key advantages (benefits or merits)

P and Q = key disadvantages (drawbacks or negatives)

🔹 INTRODUCTION (40–45 words)


Structure: Paraphrase the question + Thesis statement
Option 1 (Formal):
Meanwhile, not only the positives of this situation but also the negatives
associated with it will be explained in the ensuing paragraphs, along with
examples.
Option 2 (Simple):
Both the positives and the negatives will be explained in the ensuing
paragraphs.

✅ Tip: Rewrite the question in your own words, and then use either thesis line
above.

🔹 BODY PARAGRAPH 1 – ADVANTAGES (≈90 words)


Structure: Paraphrase + Discuss two key advantages: A and B
Discussing the merits, the most obvious one is A (first advantage).
To justify it further, [Explain A – why it is beneficial or helpful].
For instance, [Give a real-life or logical example].
Furthermore, another one of the benefits is B (second advantage).
To be more precise, [Explain B – how it creates a positive effect].
✅ Tip: Choose strong, clear benefits related to the TOPIC. Keep it realistic.

🔹 BODY PARAGRAPH 2 – DISADVANTAGES (≈90 words)
Structure: Discuss two key disadvantages: P and Q
However, there are plenty of drawbacks related to this phenomenon.
The most significant one is P (first disadvantage).
To be more specific, [Explain P – what negative outcome it causes].
For example, [Support P with a logical or real-world example].
In addition, another demerit is Q (second disadvantage).
In other words, [Explain Q – how it negatively affects people or systems].
✅ Tip: Make sure P and Q are logical problems caused by the situation in the
TOPIC.

🔹 CONCLUSION (40–45 words)


Option 1 (Formal):

To conclude, it can be said that the possible benefits of [TOPIC] include A and
B, while the notable drawbacks are not only P but also Q.
Option 2 (Simple):

To conclude, in relation to [TOPIC], it is evident that there are several


advantages and disadvantages.

✅ Tip: Do not repeat full sentences—just summarize the main ideas (A, B, P,
Q) briefly.
