My Love Of Books
I can hardly imagine my life without begin able to read or write. These skills are not vital to one s
survival as are obtaining food, clothes or shelter; however, they have been and still are definitely
life preservers and instrumental to my survival. As a little girl, I remember a favorite nursery rhyme
bookI looked at over and over, and learning to read an Early Reader book about Dick, Jane, Spot and
Puff in school. I was so excited when I could read the words to go with the pictures. I worked hard
trying to print single letters and the letters of my name on a tablet of specially lined paper designed
for printingboth uppercase and lowercase letters. I looked forward to the Weekly Reader
magazine, as well as the special school book fair orders. What would I pick next? Later on, I
acquired a few teen romance paperbacks and bought teen magazines. I still have that favorite
nursery rhyme book and those first paperbacks; they are part of me. What influenced my love of
books was having them present in our home as well as other family members homes. In
particular, an aunt and uncle we visited in North Carolina every summer had floor to ceiling
bookcases loaded with books. I could hardly wait to explore these bookshelves in search of familiar
favorites and any new ones. Thus, a dream of mine became to have a room of wall to wall shelves of
books of my own. As an older child, I would hurry through my chores so I could catch the bus to the
public libraryin downtown
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a program that employed millions of young,
unmarried men on environmental projects during the Great Depression from 1933 1942. The CCC
was one of FDR s most popular and most successful New Deal programs. It employed 300,000 men
that helped plant over three billion trees, constructed nature trails in more than 800 parks around the
United States, and shaped the national parks we enjoy today (History.com). The CCC s impact can
be noticed everyday all around the nation. The book Hitch by Jeanette Ingold is historically accurate
with its portrayal of the Civilian Conservation Corps. This CCC stuff is just temporary for me, to
bring in a little cash (Ingold 36). This quote gives a good representation... Show more content on

Compton is pretty angry in this quote because he is working beside criminals. In fact, Moss had
been arrested for trespassing on railroad property. A lot of men and women were arrested for petty
crimes, and many were sent to the CCC to get them off of the streets and to give people
something to do. According to ccclegacy.com, one Chicago judge felt the CCC was largely
responsible for the large reduction in crime. The CCC gave young men a job, taught them skills,
and provided them with a lot of benefits. It gave them a sense of self worth and value as they
helped their families, it helped the communities they worked in, and it boosted their own self
esteem. Having real work to do charged up the guys (Ingold 285). The CCC was developed to
create jobs that would boost the economy. The CCC specifically targeted young men, providing
them with employment, food, and shelter. These young men often sent money home to their
families. In exchange, the men received training and education that would stay with the throughout
their lives. Besides economic benefits, the CCC also provided a lasting legacy in our country.
There are 16 parks that were built by the CCC in South Carolina alone. The CCC was a resounding
success for the New Deal and the country because it supplied jobs, education, and a place for young
men to
It Is Voting Season Again
Since the origins of the first constitutional convention calling for the alteration of the constitution,
through our American history we have seen the rise of the two party system. Initially however not
officially through the opposition of the ratification of the new constitution, we saw the first true
political schism in the debate of the constitution s ratification. Creating the birth of Federalist and
Anti Federalist movement. With the simple contrasting beliefs such as the opposition to a strong
centralized government (Anti Federalists) came the growth of those others which we still fight for
or against today. However we can call such divisions within our history the baby steps onto to what
would become a natural phenomena of the two party system. While not during Washington s first
electionbut not limited to his re election, within the sidelines of his presidency some tension
between Jefferson and Hamilton began to arise. The beginning of the butting heads of Federalists
v. Republicans and leading to the eventually unfolding what would be the Republicans v.
Democrats. Through the power placed within America s traditional two party system, unlike many
countries they are able to keep the equilibrium or a control of their political peoples and voters to
be better able to transact new policies and reforms while still keeping each other at a check. For
years there were appearances of new parties beyond the horizon and even now there still are, but due

The Dow Jones Sustainability Index
The Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) was launched in 1999, making its name as the world s
first leading global benchmark for sustainability. This index consists of the top 10% of the largest
2,500 companies in terms of sustainability. Corporate sustainability is the business approach that
formulates long term shareholder value by grasping opportunities and controlling risks created from
economic, environmental and social development. Sustainabilityserves as opportunities and risks that
companies must adjust to and is critical to the creation of long term shareholder value, especially in
an increasingly resource constrained world. The DJSI has become an effective engagement platform
as it encourages competition among companies for a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If companies that meet a certain size criteria decide not to participate, RobecoSAM completes the
questionnaire to their fullest extent based on publically available information. The Assessed
Universe is created following the results of the CSA questionnaire as a result of companies are
ranked against peers according to their Total Sustainability Score. RobecoSAM then continues to
monitor new coverage of the companies in the universe on a daily basis, whether it is through
media stories, RepRisk, and etc., in order to analyze the company s involvement with the
environmental, social, economic issues that may negatively effect one s reputation and core
business. Through careful observation of the universe, RobecoSAM is able to in decide whether a
company s policies, processes, management systems, and commitments shape into excellent positive
performance. RobecoSAM then has 59 industries roll up into 24 global industry groups so that the
top scoring company from each is included on the DJSI. Not only does RobecoSAM stand as the
basis for the development of the DJSI, but it also provides insights used to conduct empirical in
house research or is used to measure the impact of corporate sustainability performance on financial
performance.
The triple bottom line is measured in three different categories including social, environmental, and
financial factors. The financial factors are easy to measure

James explores the type of an American girl who is innocent of the knowledge of evil and
immorality. The novel becomes a sort of meditation on the pleasures and perils of innocence in
all of its guises. Daisy is a girl who s unshakably optimistic and fun in a way that only slightly
naïve people can be. Winterbourne is all cynical. Daisy offers a chance for him to recapture that
innocence and charm vicariously. While reading this I kept asking myself if Daisy is aware of
what she is doing it seems as if she wants to become someone she is not. James sees Daisy as the
free, spontaneous, independent, and natural. (Fogel 3) American girl who is defined as
disreputable. (Fogel 9) James shows how Daisy s utter disregard for convention prevents her from
successfully relating to others, (Fogel 9) and leads to her death when she disregards warnings not to
go the Coliseum at night. James writes and thinks through passion it seems in Daisy Miller and is
also thinking of innocence and loneliness. He leaves you not knowing what he is doing or where he
is going, but when Daisy s death occurs it ironically brings out confirmations of her much debated
innocence. James writes with passion to bring out the true emotion in this novel, and he is playing
with innocence throughout the entire

The Bluest Eye Toni Morrison Essay
Society, especially western, conceptualizes beauty through the use of publicity and cinema. We are
under constant bombardment from consumer related magazine ads, billboards, television
commercials, and movies about what beautiful people look like and how we should imitate them.
This standard is overwhelmingly portrayed as white beauty. Starting from a young age this
standard of beauty is forged in our minds; we want to look like these actors and models; we want
to be thin, fit, youthful looking, have a symmetrical face and possibly even posses a particular
race. We accept this beauty standard; we notice our various faults among ourselves and self critique.
We try to emulate the models as best we can and we fail to realize that these... Show more content on

Pauline Breedlove, like her husband Cholly, is at first portrayed as just another antagonist in the
novel, helping push Pecola further and further to insanity. Morrison makes it a point to illustrate
how Pauline arrives in her state as an antagonist; she does not just create empty monsters; she
tries to make all of the antagonists sympathetic in some way to justify how they become so. After
moving up north with Cholly to find work Pauline, quickly becomes isolated and depressed.
Pauline tries to fit in by attempting to adapt to the northerners speech, fashion, and appearance
that is modeled after the white beauty standard, unfortunately she could never perfect or change
herself enough to be accepted which leads to her isolation. Pauline felt uncomfortable with the
few black women she met. They were amused by her because she did not straighten her hair.
When she tried to make up her face as they did, it came off rather badly. Their goading glances
and private snickers at her way of talking (saying chil ren ) and dressing developed in her a desire
for new clothes. (Pg. 116). It was through this isolation during her pregnancy that she began to
take refuge at the movie theaters. In films, we are shown society s current vision of what beauty
is, what we should find aesthetically pleasing in people. Pauline begins to go to the movies on a
nearly daily basis to escape the reality of her real life and it is here that she is introduced to what
