Descriptive Essay Hogwarts
Descriptive Essay
Hogwarts The most distinct setting of Harry Potter is Hogwarts. Hogwarts is a wondrous, magical
building with many towers and turrets. It is home to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. I
find Hogwarts location, its castle, the grounds, and Quiddich fascinating. Hogwarts is built in a
forested area said to be in Scotland. The castle is located atop a cliff overlooking a lake. The lake
is south of the castle and the front entrance of the castle faces toward the west. There is a small
underground inlet, its entrance hidden by hanging ivy, that leads to a stony beach below the castle
at the base of the cliff. From there, a path leads up to the front door of the castle. A road runs around
the lake to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hagrid s cabin is located on the edge of the Forbidden Forrest. Quidditch Field is on the opposite
side of Hogwarts from the Forbidden Forrest. There is a lake located south of the castle and is
approximately a half mile in diameter. Giant Squids, Merfolk, and Grindylows live in this lake.
Quidditch is big at Hogwarts. Each House fields a team, which includes the seven players and
often one or two reserve players as well. The teams have a team captain who not only plays but
also acts as coach. The captain leads practices, devises strategies, and sees to the induction of new
players into the team. Quidditch tryouts are typically during the second week of the school year,
although the exact day and time are up to the captain to determine; students who wish to play for
their Houses are asked to talk to Madam Hooch. The Quidditch season at Hogwarts starts in
October, with the first games early in November. Madam Hooch is the resident Quidditch expert.
The Bludgers, Quaffles, and Snitch are stored securely in her office between games and she acts as
referee for the matches. Team practices are scheduled by individual captains. Most teams practice
almost every day, after school or in the evenings.
J.K Rowling had a very vivid imagination to create Hogwarts. You can hopefully now see why I find
it fascinating. If you haven t seen or read the series of Harry Potter you should make time. You

The creation of an allegory connecting the Salem Witch Trials with McCarthyist America, and
context, primarily historical, alerts viewers of the precaution that must be held in relation to
dogmatic ideologies. In order to fully comprehend the allegorical extracts the historical context must
first be understood. At the time of publication, 1953, the Cold War was in occurrence. The Cold War
was essentially a war of two antithetical ideologies, capitalism (in America) and communism (in the
USSR). In 1949 the USSR exploded their first nuclear weapon and not long after in 1953, activated
their first hydrogen bomb. Due to this Americans became paranoid of the communist threat and
emanated into capitalist ideologies becoming unquestionable; over
Twain And Regionalism
Writing in the late 19th century, both Mark Twain and Ambrose Bierce were part of the Realism
literary period, which lasted from 1865 to 1900. Their writings, especially those of Twain, helped to
chart the course of American literature. Despite being in the Realism period, their stories are also
part of other eras. Writingmainly toward the beginning of the era and coming from a small Midwest
village, Twain was greatly influenced by Regionalism. Bierce, on the other hand, drew much of his
ideas from the period that followed Realism: Naturalism. While Mark Twainand Ambrose Bierce
both primarily wrote Realism, Twain s writings have a bent for Regionalism, while Bierce s short
stories lean towards Naturalism. Samuel Clemens, better known as... Show more content on

Bierce, however, has a Naturalist inclination. According to him, humans live in a vast and
completely indifferent universe which we cannot fully grasp or perceive (Williams). This very
concept is the essence of Naturalism, which features many of the varying details that are
common in Bierce s writings. One such detail is a use of grotesque but matter of fact details,
which is prevalent in Chickamauga, which includes a man that has a face that lacked a lower
jaw from the upper teeth to the throat was a great red gap fringed with hanging shreds of flesh
and splinters of bone (Bierce, Ambrose. Chickamauga ), as well as the dead body of a woman the
white face turned upward, the hands thrown out and clutched full of grass, the clothing deranged,
the long dark hair in tangles and full of clotted blood (Bierce, Ambrose. Chickamauga ). Bierce also
depicts war, fear, and death as unstoppable forces that make worms meat be [t]he finished product of
which we are the raw material (Bierce, Ambrose. The Devil s Dictionary). This idea of the presence
of great omnipotent powers that are beyond the understanding of humans is one unique to
Naturalism, and proves that he was strongly influenced by the Naturalism
The Impact Of Television And Video On Student Achievement
The Impact of Television Video Entertainment on Student Achievement in Reading and Writing.

The term cyberspace was coined by writer William Gibson in his book Neuromancer. Published in
1984, Neuromancer was one of the first cyberpunk novels that involved a virtual world alongside the
real one. The novels of Gibson, Neal Stephenson and other cyberpunk authors tell stories of a not so
distant future where video screens, computers and other media channels ... Show more content on

The children of this new millennium will be barraged with more electronic media than ever in
history. The nature of a child s curiosity will naturally drawn him or her to a video game or
interactive television. The other influence is that cable operators, television networks and video
game publishers target children (and their parents) as part of the consumer base. Children will not
be able to escape electronic media and in the future may be drawn more and more toward it.
Though the new media saturated world may be wonderful in many ways, what suffers may be
traditional educational practices. If children spend their time watching TV and playing video
games they are not spending a great deal of time reading and writing. Statistics collected by the
U.S. Department of Education s National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES) show that
student achievement in both reading and writing has been declining in recent years. The NCES
1998 Writing Report Card states that 16 percent of 4th and 8th graders and 22 percent of 12th
graders have not mastered basic writing skills (March, 1999). The NCES 1998 Reading Report Card
shows that across grades 4, 8, and 12, no more than 40 percent achieved the proficient level of
reading and only 7 percent of 4th graders, 3 percent of 8th graders, and 6 percent of 12th graders
could read at the advanced level.
