The ultimate goal of science is understanding. Science constantly works for establishing the
truth about nature and social or human events. The aim of the scientist is to discover,
accumulate and interpret fact and relationships among the facts. Facts about the natural
universes are not isolated events rather they are patterned and related in diverse ways. Most of
their meanings and relationships are unknown to the scientists. The scientist’s effort is
expended to arrange a known facts in new pattern, to discover unknown meanings and
relationships. Through rational analysis the scientist organizes the fact into more and more
abstract in general system. The scientist does this by the formulation of general principles or
laws connecting the facts.There is a continuum of understanding. It has three parts.
Experience
Knowledge
Understanding

Experience is the first and important step to towards understanding. But mere repetition
experience of an event does not result in understanding.

A second step toward understanding is knowledge. By manipulation of experience through


thought processes, old meaning are reinterpreted and new meanings are discovered. The end
result is knowledge.

Understanding is more than experience and knowledge. After having knowledge, it is further
enlarged, organized and systematized.

Understanding has two parts. They are------------

Description-
Description is the process of arriving at valid descriptive statements, generally restricted to
reports of observations. Observation is the principle basis of scientific description. There are two
kinds of description. They are…….

State description: State description is a statement of what an object is like at some given point
in time.
Process description: Process description is the statement of how an object works; like a motion
picture. A process description specifies the causal relationship between two variables.

Explanation
Explanation refers to explain what the data means. Scientists usually accomplished the goal by
formulating a theory a coherent group of assumptions and propositions that can explain the
data. It is the definition of theory. In other words, explanation is the process of arriving at valid
explanatory statements. An explanatory statement is a general statement from which a number
of descriptive statement can be logically derived.

Prediction
No scientist is content to stop after he has make a discovery, confirm a hypothesis or explain a
complex phenomenon. He wants to make use of his results. Therefore, he makes
generalizations and develops principles and theory. Then he makes predictions of how the
principles and theories operate in a new situation. For example, a student’s score on the GRE
as well as under graduate CGPA can be used to predict how well the student will do in graduate
school. Prediction is based on understanding forms, the springboard from which prediction into
the unknown to make in term, prediction contributes towards further testing and verification of
understanding. If the prediction is unsuccessful. Then the understanding of phenomena can be
questioned.

Control
The final goal of science is the application of the knowledge to promote the human welfare. It is
accomplished through the process of control. Control refers to manipulation of the conditions
determining a phenomenon in order to achieve some desired aims. It is also a way to test and
verify understanding. For example, control in the area of vocational guidance. It has been
demonstrated that aptitude test scores and success in college are highly correlated. This finding
leads to exercise is more intelligence control to over the admission student of college training.
We can advise a student having to a low aptitude test scores that he should not attend college
works. In this way, we save the person from many serious frustrations and direct his activities to
areas where he would achieve mark success. By doing so, we would be exercising control over

The goals of science-understanding, prediction, and control-are inherently connected to each
step of the scientific method. The scientific method serves as the structured process through
which these goals are achieved.

Understanding is the ultimate goal. It starts with observation and data collection, followed by

The scientific method is a particular set of rules for achieving approach of science. Scientific
method is an approach used by scientists to a systematically acquired knowledge and
understanding about behavior and other phenomena of interest. There are several rules or
principles of scientific method.

Principles Followed in the Application of Scientific Method in Psychology-


Psychology, as a science, follows several core principles in applying the scientific method.
These principles ensure that research is systematic, objective, and replicable. The main
principles are:

1. Operational Definition: It is a definition that identifies exactly what a scientist means by


describing what things to be established or what procedure is to be followed in a scientific
afford. Scientist can share their meanings and observation with others. Very specific and narrow
definition break down the abstract idea of the specific terms into concrit observation things. The

principle of operational definition requires us to “point to” the things, we are taking about. In any
research work, the researcher may have to use many terms to carry specific meanings. But
each of the term may imply more than one meaning. In that case, it may lead to conclusion
about which meaning of the term did the scientist should imply. In short, the variables under the
study should be defined in terms of unambiguous precise, observable and measurable events.

2. Controlled Observation: Control is not the only way of discounting a variable of the cause of
the change on the variable which the measures the effect, but it is the most direct and certain.
The value of the principles of the controlled observation is that it tends to ensure that the
scientist will use only descriptive statements which are valid, interpretations of situations
observed. One can make a descriptive statement that a change in variable A produces the
change in variable B. Only if all other variables can be discounted as causes of the change in B.
In order to ensure this cause of relationship between A and B, Scientist should make this
observation in a control situation. So that other variables known as extraneous variables, cannot
confounded the results.

3.Principle of Generalization: Familiar words are faster to memorize than the unfamiliar words.
We have to generalize the words. A descriptive statement should refer to abstract variable, not
particular antecedent and consequence condition.

4. Repeated Observations: The scientific status of generalization is based on repeated


observations not on a signal observation. Replication/repetition is therefore one of the hallmarks
of science. Replication means repeating the same experiment or study on other member of the
population unless proper or sufficient repetition is most. The descripted statement cannot be
generalized to the intended population.

5. Confirmation: Scientific knowledge is not conflict with generalization. The general statement
about fact is accepted as scientific knowledge only often verification. In fact, verification involves
repetition of the research is other individual in similar circumstance. If the result is confirmed, the
generalized statement obtains its scientific status.

6. Principle of Consistency: If two complementary statements are contradictory, then at least


one of them must be false. The principle of consistency requires that the explanatory statement

of sight out of mind. Those kinds of contradictory statements don’t have any exist in science.
