Poe is generally credited with having been the originator of the short story (Haines 27). To some
extent in his poems, and to an impressive degree in his tales, he was a pioneer in opening up areas

Blood diamonds in Africa are causing many problems. This conflict is creating much chaos. It is
the overall cause of slavery, rape and brutality in Sierra Leone and other neighboring countries. Its
biggest factor is it may determine life or death Sierra Leone supplies us with fine diamonds but
what is the U.S. or any other country doing to help prevent this issue and the heinous crimes that
come as a result. The story of these infamous diamonds all started with a fifteen year old who found
a diamond in his father s arm. The diamond business started in 1935 when De Beers took all control
over dining prospects in Sierra Leone. De Beers are a group of companies has a main role in the
exploration of diamonds, as well as diamond mining, diamond retail, diamond trading, and
industrial diamond manufacturing sectors. This group was founded in 1888, and they are
responsible for the problems Sierra Leone is facing today. These diamonds can be found in
volcanic pipes. Diamonds are a pure form of carbon in a transparent state. Diamonds have always
been a sign of wealth. Historically kings and queens were known for wearing these. Over time
many people began lusting over them. Due to these Blood Diamonds, Sierra Leone has faced many
social and economic costs. One diamond is capable of causing a civil war. That s all, a fight over
diamond control took many lives. During this civil war, rebels came and committed disgusting

However, they said, since last summer, the situation has improved especially in the area of

Differences Between Wesfarmers And Woolworths
Bond valuation is a technique for determining the fair value of a particular bond and includes
calculating the present value of the bond s future interest payments and the bond s value upon
maturity (Investopedia , 2017). After calculations, Wesfarmers Limited bonds were valued at
$120.38 whereas Woolworths Limited bonds was valued at $117.93 within three years based on a
par value of $100.00. See Appendix C, Figure I for workings. Both Wesfarmers and Woolworths
bonds are premium because they are worth more than their face value which means anytime the
yield to maturity is less than the coupon rate, you have a premium bond. According to Titan et al,
bond ratings are assessments of the creditworthiness of the bond issuer (Times, 2017, p. 619).

It has become quite ordinary to not think about the past. Sure it gets taught and everyone knows it
s there but people never want to look back. Out of shame? Fear? In today s day, we respect the past
but rarely delve into it except for certain days. Elie Wiesel s book Night is the self account of Wiesel
s life in the Holocaust. It reflects back to the time through the eyes of a Jewish boy living in the
awful conditions. It tells the story from the first few steps that Hitler takes, to when the camps was

In elie Wiesel s Night, a story about the author and his personal connection to the holocaust, the
meaning is little muddled up as it is a memoir so it does not need a very clear meaning.
Throughout the whole book Elie deals with faith issues and self problems. There is also a theme
of constantly fearing death. Death is always looming over the characters as it is the Holocaust.
Although the samr thing is looming throughout the Final Days, it is a lot different. The death that
is shown in Night is the death of many and the life of few. In The Final Days, it is the death of
few and the life of Nazi Germany. The audience knows she will die, all it takes to know that is a
quick google search, but there is still always a slight glimmer of hope which Night does not have.
Hope is definitely a theme in The Final Days that is not really shown in Night. One possible reason
for that is that Elie gives up fairly quickly. He loses hope and therefore loses faith.

In conclusion, these media pieces both show a lot of the same ideas, but they are quite different on a
number of standings

The House of Seven Gables as a Gothic Novel Essay
The House of Seven Gables as a Gothic Novel

To be a paradigm of a Gothic novel, The House of Seven Gables needs to include many elements,
all which center on the ideas of gloom, horror, and mystery. The action of a Gothic novel takes place
in a run down, abandoned or occupied, mansion or castle, which often include secret passages, doors,
and compartments (Encarta). The mansion also adds its own flavor and variety to the atmosphere of
mystery and suspense in the novel by providing a dark and gloomy setting where the story takes
place. The basis of mystery and suspense in the atmosphere of the novel feeds off of an unexplained
or supernatural event in the present or from past generations (Harris). The unexplained ... Show more

The inclusion of the elements of suspense, mystery, and gloom in a novel, along with the occurrence
of supernatural and unexplained events, provide support for the novel as a Gothic piece of literature.
By including all the elements, which standardize the content and atmosphere of the novel in the The
House of Seven Gables, Nathaniel Hawthorne develops an exemplary example of a Gothic piece of
literature.

To be considered a Gothic novel, The House of Seven Gables needs to first fulfill the requirements
of the setting, including a once aristocratic run down mansion or castle with many secret doors,
passages, and compartments. The elements in the setting produce effects in the development of the
mysterious and gloomy atmosphere. In the early years of the Pyncheon family, Colonel Pyncheon
steals the domicile and land of Mathew Maule out of greed and fulfillment of his superiority as an
aristocrat. Colonel Pyncheon constructs the House of Seven Gables on Pyncheon Street, over the
grave of the restless Mathew Maule, inheriting the curse of death within its walls. The anathema of
death Mathew Maule sentences the residents House of Seven Gables to results in a scarcity of
inhabitants, due to the fear for their lives, and therefore the house becomes extremely dark and
lonesome to the later generations. The lack of denizens to upkeep the house results in the house
itself showing the signs of the melancholy and gloom it contains, mirroring the
Use Of The Character And Term Fool
The use of the character and term fool has a significance meaning in the work of Shakespeare.
Essentially, a fool in the works of Shakespeare is a form of ridicule, where, the author puts certain
members of certain in a ridiculed position. However, the author utilizes the character a fool in a
most humorous way such that the person depicted as a fool is not necessary so but a way of
fulfilling a particular theme or direction of his works. In the play, King Lear, there is a specific
character named fool , but also the term is used to refer another character based on a context or to
drive a particular theme. Cordelia was called by his father, King Lear a fool at the end of the play.
In this paper therefore, the focus is on circumstances under which Cordelia was both her own
character and a fool .
Cordelia and the Fool
Cordelia played a double role in the play King Lear by William Shakespeare. It remains one of the
most interesting as well as intriguing characterization by Shakespeare in his works. The play
King Lear by William Shakespeare is a tragedy and depicted a descent of a character into madness
of the king. This is when he disposed his kingdom by bequeathing the kingdom to three of his
daughters based on flattery. This eventually was critical in bringing tragedies and painful
consequences to all people involved in the kingdom. At the end of the play, the king calls his
youngest daughter Cordelia a fool in prison when she was hanged.

Animals In The Enigma Of Animal Suffering
In The Enigma of Animal Suffering, the author implies that animals may not be so different from
human beings in regards to feeing love and pain. The author mainly focuses on talking about farm
animals since those are the type that are mainly consumed. He uses analogies by comparing
animals to some delicate situations people actually experienced. For example, he compared cows
being inseminated to a person being sexually assaulted. These analogies are difficult to think about
in a different perspective, but it definitely makes you think. He highlights th way these farm
animals are treated before they are slaughtered and defends the fact that they have feelings as well.
Because some of us do not see them as our own or the way our priorities are when it comes up tp
the business industry, we ignore everything else. The way we treat animals in general not just... Show

The Purpose Of Ideology

Ideology is a system of meaning that helps define and explain the world and that makes value
judgements about that world. It refers not only to the beliefs held about the world but also to the
basic ways in which the world is defined (Croteau, Hoynes, and Milan 1953). Ideology is a body of
ideas concerning economic, social and political values and goals which posit action programmes for
attaining these goals. Padelford and Lincoln

Link between ideology and media
The ideology of the media is broad and manifests in the communicativity of the media. To facilitate
ideological analysis, however, the key is the fit between the images and texts in a specific media
output, plus the manner thought and discussion on social and cultural issues. Questions, however,
arise as to how the media content (shaped by ideologies) depict real life. This begs the question of
function and ethics. The ideological analysis further attempts to answer questions about what the
media messages depict of the society and its people.
This underscores why politicians have long perceived mass media as a veritable channel of
disseminating an ideology so that the society can mirror itself against what the media feeds it and
thus be manipulated. This further begs the question of whether the media is a contributor or
otherwise to societal problems in the face of political ideological dissemination.
Furthermore, the media and ideology are interconnected in the following ways (Asemah, 2011):
i.The media serves as a channel for communication of ideologies ii. Media function requires its
representation of concepts of reality within and without the local environment to the

Blake s The Marriage of Heaven and Hell Essay
Blake s The Marriage of Heaven and Hell

The Nature of my Work is Visionary or Imaginative; it is an Endeavor to Restore what the Ancients
calld the Golden Age. William Blake (Johnson/Grant,xxiv).

William Blake completed the manuscript of The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, as well as the
twenty five accompanying engraved plates, in 1792. In the sense that the The Marriage of Heaven
and Hell is a vision of a particular version of reality, it subscribes to one definition of the mythic, but
also fulfills another as Birenbaum writes in Tragedy and Innocence: ...on a more specialized level...

Blake uses traditional symbols of angels and devils, animal imagery, and especially images of fire
and flame to: 1) set up a dual world, a confrontation of opposites or contraries which illustrate how
the rules of Reason and Religion repress and pervert the basic creative energy of humanity, 2)
argues for apocalyptic transformation of the self through the radical regeneration of each person s
own power to imagine (Johnson/Grant, xxiv), and 3) reconstructs Man in a new image, a fully
realized Man who is both rational and imaginative, partaking of his divinity through creativity. The
form of the poem consists of The Argument, expositions on his concepts of the contraries and of
expanded perception which are both interspersed with Memorable Fancies that explicate and enlarge
on his expositions, and concludes with A Song of Liberty, a prophecy of a future heaven on earth.

Without Contraries is no progression. Attraction and

Repulsion, reason and Energy, Love and Hate, are

From these contraries spring what the religious call

One of the main themes of The Marriage of Heaven and Hell is the confrontation of the grand
oppositions of orthodox Christian doctrine: Heaven and Hell, good and evil,
An Inspector Calls by J.B. Priestley is full of lies and...
J.B. Priestley sets the play in a lavish and happy environment. Without Priestley even telling the
audience that the play is set pre war it is obvious because of all the available luxuries and fineries
such as champagne glasses and dessert plates . The war caused great shortages in goods and food,
which led to rationing. No one in 1945 (when the play was written) would have been able to create a
luxuriant celebratory dinner. This cunning use of setting deliberately reminds the audience of some
of the luxuries lost because of the war.

The play, An Inspector Calls , uses moralistic irony to reflect on achievements made today. He
reveals the weaknesses and wickedness not only in society, but in the individual characters; which I

This is surely what is featured in An Inspector Calls.

The 1912 society was a wicked one with evidence of wrong doing, sinfulness, spite, vileness
(wickedness), a society in which there was no equality, democracy, or benefits. Without these
important factors, a society cannot function, and wickedness is decreed in society. Weakness and
wickedness is distributed throughout the play on an individual basis, mostly due to the hypocrisy
and aristocracy of society.

Mr Birling is delineated as a respectable and successful business man, with a wealthy family.
Although by looking beyond the text we can determine that Mr Birling was in fact a selfish, greedy
despot. This is not entirely Mr Birling s fault; it is more to do with the format of society.

Mr Birling was paying Eva twenty two an six (a subsistent amount of money). Eva requested
twenty five shillings . Mr Birling refused to pay and after Eva Smith stood up for what she believed
in, she was sacked.

The fact that Mr Birling acted, and fired Eva shows he was harsh in his actions. Also the fact that
no one found anything wrong with Mr Birling s action, which is an example of wrong doing defines
wickedness/weakness in society.

Sheila Birling s sub sequential actions also encouraged Eva Smith to commit suicide. Sheila was the
one who got Eva Smith fired from Milwards shop. When Sheila was trying on the dress, Eva
laughed. Sheila assumed Eva was laughing

My weekly stroll starts at Chatham Square, near the southern end of Mott Street. Here, the older
Chinese gather around the tables, located throughout the area. At one table located at the far end of
the square, some sit with cards in hand and ready to make a witty move. Many more stand around
them to observe the game, now at its climax. It is the classic game of Chinese Poker. Despite the its
origins from Asia, many immigrants have brought the game to America and is a favorite pastime for
both the youth and elders.
One man scratches his mustache and smirks before he slams down a combo of cards. Full house!
he boomed, proudly displaying his three kings paired with a two jack cards. The crowd jeers
when the other three players pass. The man places down a two of spade, and the other players pass
again. With only one card left in his hand, the winner is obvious, yet the crowd is willing to watch
until the end. Finally, the man places down his last card, a measly three of hearts, and the crowd
cheers as they congratulate the winner.
Though I wish I could stay to watch another game, I resume my walk, knowing the consequences if
I was to be late to music class. Immediately, the vast sense of space of Chatham Square is replaced
as I enter the narrow thoroughfare of Mott Street. Multistoried, brick buildings rise up, which are the
homes of the residents, with typical fire escapes projecting out of the building that remain unused.
