Exploring the Concept of Satire in A Modest Proposal by...
A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift, and Top of the Food Chain by T. Coraghessan Boyle, both
are short stories that explore the concept of satire. Satire can be defined as a kind of writing that
ridicules human weakness, vice, of folly in order to bring about social reform. It is a kind of
writing to bring about change to society. Even though both are short stories, they easily get the
faults of society across to its readers. In A Modest Proposal, Swift is offering an outrageous solution
to the problems of human misery. He proposes that people should start eating babies, and using
them for everything that they are worth on a daily basis. Swift creates a pamphlet and states six
reasons as to why this is a brilliant idea. He states that money wouldn t be wasted on food, the
number of Catholics would be reduced, it would be great inducement to marriages, there would
be more food so the economy would increase, poor tenants would have money for their landlords,
and it would be an improvement for the tavern business. Swift wants everyone to know how badly
the Irish people are being treated by the English. He wants to change the reader s point of view
through this sarcastic satirical pamphlet. The authors purpose of A Modest Proposal, is to try to
change society. Swift is trying to reform the British official s involvement in Ireland. People are
dying, and nothing is being done about it. He is trying to shock readers with a twisted story, but also
bring about change
Pros And Cons Of Charlie Gordon
Learning about the world is challenging enough, but to unlearn it knowing what is being lost is
even more burdensome. Charlie Gordon is a man that learned the world and lost it all. Is
knowledge admirable while it can be retained or is ignorance bliss when it can t? Knowledge is
excellent, even if it is only for a little while, even if it is retained for a short period because people
know what the world is, even when that knowledgeis lost, people will retain a certain understanding
of the world before they unlearned it. Some say Knowledge is a wonderful tool in life, but if a man
acquires knowledge, but soon unlearns the knowledge yet understands how the world should be, and
then loses it, ignoranceis bliss so the man does not know how people treat them in atrocious ways,
and it shall stay that way for his/her benefit. . All people deserve to acquire Knowledge, so they
have the experience of how life should be. Charlie Gordon acquires knowledge of how the world
is and how people treat people who have mental setbacks. To come from a position where he is
made fun of, to know this, and then back to being treated as a person that has a mental disability,
knowing how he is treated has multiple pros including some cons.
To know information, even if that knowledge hurts you, is useful. Although it may hurt, it is
wonderful because you gain the information. Charlie Gordon learns that his friends are not actually
great friends. After becoming smart Charlie realizes his
Hospital Based Shootings
A disaster is an event that is a natural or man made occurrence that can disrupt or destroy the lives
of those it affects (Stanhope Lancaster, 2014). Management of a disaster includes four phases;
prevention, preparedness, response and recovery (Stanhope Lancaster, 2014). To date there have
been 154 hospital based shootings, which resulted in 235 dead or injured. (C.Catlett, 2012). The
purpose of this paper is to identify emergency preparedness and response to hospital based
shootings, and the role of the public health nurse in such a disaster.

Erectile Dysfunction (ED)
Erectile dysfunction or ED is a serious medical condition, but usually occurs due to other physical
and psychological problems. Patients who struggle with ED lose self confidence and struggle to
engage in healthy physical relationships. Since they lose their ability to enjoy sexual intimacy, they
believe that they will not be able to satisfy their sexual partners. They need to go through a detailed
medical examination to find out the real issues that have produced this inability. However, they need
the support of Kamagra 100mg which allows them to once again resume sexual activities and engage
actively in relationships. The use of this fine product allows them to quickly regain the capacity to
have intercourse, rather than waiting for the actual
Sinkholes In California
Sinkhole or Drink Hole Groundwater is a primary source of water for farmers and many citizens
in california. But it causes ground sinkage and creates a risk for sinkholes. Groundwater is needed,
but it does need at least some sort of restriction or regulation because people pump as much as they
want with no restraint. Pumping and drilling groundwater causes major safety problems for the state
of california. One of the consequences for drilling wells is that the ground can sink, which may lead
to many more sinkholes in california. These are the main reasons groundwater and well drilling
should be regulated in the state california. Pumping groundwater can lead to horrible scenarios that
can seriously hurt the central valley, from ground
Jillian Research Paper
Awe you look so cute! Jillian exclaims nearly every day when she sees me walk out of my room to
leave for school in the mornings. Cute is a word Jillian, or Jilly, as I call her, uses to describe nearly
everything in her world. Jillian always tries her hardest to make sure she s nice to everyone, and
strives to make them feel good about themselves. Many words can be used to describe Jillian, but
the most accurate words to describe her is kind hearted. Jillian Rose Pratt is the best older sister
anyone could ever ask for. In a year I ll be helping her pack her bags for college. I ll no longer have
my older sister who always makes even the hardest days a little brighter. I ll lose the person I turn to
for the best advice I could ever imagine. When my tears fall... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Her favorite outfits usually consist of athletic leggings paired with a fitted shirt underneath a
baggy hoodie or a stylish windbreaker. Jillian s hair always looks like she just came from the
beach, and has a light brown hue with streaks of honey mingling with the brown. If looks could
kill, everyone in Jillian s path would be dead. Jilly s resting face looks like she hates everyone
and everything, so people are generally fearful when they first see her. Once people get over their
fear of Jillian s natural face, they realize she couldn t hurt a fly. Jillian is always looking for ways
to help me. One of the biggest ways she s helped me is by introducing me to the youth ministry at
Oak Bridge. When I think of Jillian, church is one of the first things to come to my mind. Going
to The Edge, which is the name of our ministry, with Jillian is the thing that I look forward to
every week. Looking over in the middle of a song and seeing her smiling face as she sings her
praises lights me up. When I m conflicted with my faith, talking to Jilly always helps me see things
in a new way and helps me in more ways than she will ever
Essay on The Oresteia
The War of the Sexes in Eumenides
In this essay I will examine the war of the sexes taking place in The Eumenides, the final play of
The Oresteia. The plot of The Eumenides pits Orestes and Apollo (representing the male gods and, to
a certain extent, male values in general) against the ghost of Clytemnestra and the Furies (equally
representative of female values.) Of more vital importance, however, is whether Athene sides with
the males or females throughout the play.
The character of Orestes is somewhat down played in The Eumenides and in fact his role is far less
significant than that of Apollo. Our first sight of Orestes sees him in a contradictory stance at Delphi,

Commanded him to avenge his father, what of it? (Aeschylus, The Eumenides, Robert Fagles Trans.,
lines 200 201, Penguin Classics, 1977.) Throughout the play the character of Apollo is used to draw
attention to the physical discrepancies between the male and the female with his references to light
and darkness but more importantly with the vital question of birth, I give you proof that all I say is
true. The father can father forth without a mother. Here she stands, our living witness. Look

womb but such a stock no goddess could conceive! (Aeschylus, The Eumenides, RobertFagles
Trans., lines 672 677, Penguin Classics, 1977.)
The Furies provide the stark contrast to Apollo s character. He is the new god, he stands for
patriarchy, light and politically he is far more liberal. (Orestes) O God of the light, Apollo, how
will the verdict go? (Leader) O Night, dark mother, are you watching now? (Aeschylus, The
Eumenides, Robert Fagles Trans., lines 759 760, Penguin Classics, 1977.) The Furies (to really
stress the point) are clothed in black and possibly wear black paint to cover their faces and limbs
also and repeatedly invoke the dark, Mother who bore me, O dear Mother Night, to avenge the
blinded dead and those who see by day, now hear me! (Aeschylus, The
Longmire Recital Hall Concert Report
On Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at eight o clock in the evening in Longmire Recital Hall, The
Florida State University presented the Faculty/Guest Artist Recital which included David
Kalhous and Jihye Chang both pianists, the two collectively performed 20 pieces during the
concert. I have never been to a recital of this sort, I assumed the venue would be large and there
would be people singing and playing different instruments. The venue was actually small and
there was only a piano. I was surprised that the crowd was so small being that the concert was at
Florida State University, I assumed there would be a great number of people. The Longmire
Recital Hall was small and the seating was arranged like movie theater seating. The lighting was
very low; there was only enough lighting to see the pianist. Since this was my first time attending
a recital of this sort I was confused as to why the pianist had to bow before each piece, or how
long the audience applauded after each performance. Performers for this event were David Kalhous
and Jihye Chang. David is a brilliant pianist, who is now gaining recognition in Europe and the
United Stated for his elegant musicianship. Jihye Chang is also a pianist, who serves as an adjunct
professor of musictheory at Florida State University.
The first piece Po zarostlém chodníčku (On an Overgrown Path) was very soft it was a great way
to open up the recital. It was smooth and steady, and enjoyable to listen to. The meter for this piece

D Artagnan Quotes
In this book D artagnan is a very strong minded person who knows what he wants and he will get
what he wants. D artagnan is very intelligent but he is also unrealistic about some things. He starts
off in this book as a young man in his twenties, and he is not very wealthy. He left Gascony with a
horse, fifteen crowns, and a letter of recommendation. He left so that he could find his fortune
somewhere else and his dream was to become a musketeer and be loyal to the king. D artagnan is
brave, smart, ambitious, and crafty. He is very brave because he is willing to become a musketeer
and you have to have a lot of strength and courage to be a part of that. It is very dangerous to be a
musketeer because you never know what you will have to do and... Show more content on

Bonacieux is introduced into the book by coming to D artagnans s door asking him for help. His
wife has been kidnapped and he needed help to get her back. He thinks that the cardinal could have
something to do with the kidnapping. The Cardinal is in love with the queen and she does not love
him, but Bonacieux s wife works with the queen and this is the Cardinal s way of getting back at
the queen. He hires this man with the scar to watch his wife and end up kidnapping her, so that
he could get back at the queen for not loving him. In my opinion Bonacieux is a coward. He says
to D artagnan that he has seen this guy following his wife over a period of time, but yet he hasn t
done anything about it. He hasn t tried to get help or get it done himself but he waits until his
wife is kidnapped to do something about it, but even then he goes to ask someone else for help
because he is too scared and too worried about his own life to do it himself. He isn t a man and he
doesn t have a backbone. D artagnan on the other hand does because he is always willing to help
others. So, he agrees to help find his wife and help him out. They both want to help and they both
care, but Bonacieux is not being a man about this. It makes it look like he only cares about himself
and his life rather than his wife. Bonacieux is more worried about his life and what will happen to
him than his wife and what will happen to her. He is still
Deaf Perceptions Of The Deaf
Deaf Perceptions of Animacy
Deaf culture has long been misunderstood and misrepresented within America, in part due to the
significant language barrier between the American Deaf and their hearing counterparts. Though it is
often thought to be nothing more than an elevated form of charades, American Sign Language (ASL)
is a language like any other not only with its own grammatical syntax, phonology, and morphology,
but also in its compliance to the Sapir Whorf hypothesis. Created by Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee
Whorf, the hypothesis exists in two degrees: weak and strong. The former claims that language
shapes our thoughts, and thus our culture, while the latter version claims that language not only
shapes our thoughts and our culture, it creates them. Though there is debate surrounding the degree
to which the hypothesis extends, it is undoubtable that it is applicable to Deaf culture and its use of
ASL as a first language in prelingually Deaf individuals. Using the Sapir Whorf hypothesis as its
theoretical framework, this research proposes to investigate how the absence of copular verbs within
ASL shapes Deaf perception of animacy and how such perceptions manifest within Deaf culture.
Language was long thought to be a passageway passagewayfor thought; a go between that allowed
one to translate their pre existing ideas into a communicable form via sounds, writing, and gesture
(Cultural Encounters). However, this understanding shifted upon the introduction of the Sapir Whorf
